Another make-or-break week is on tap at

Edison State College.

The National League for Nursing's

Accrediting Commission will visit campus to

decide if Edison's four-year nursing

program meets national standards.Evaluators wi!! review policies, inspect

medica! equipment and interviewadministrators, faculty and students.

It's the second time in four months Edison

has rolled out the red carpet for an

accrediting agency. In November, the

Southern Association of Colleges and

Schools' Commission on Colleges toured

Edison to judge whether the institution as awhole is operating by the books. Officials

expect to land a warning or possibly

probation.

The baccalaureate nursing program earned

approval from the Florida Board of

Education in 2009, but program leaders

didn't apply for NLNAC accreditation until

August. That's when the college notified

almost 100 graduates and 300 currentstudents about. ramifications of earning a

degree from an unaccredited program,

Most graduate schools won't accept them,

and some employees won't, either.

takes up to two years, but the NLNAC fast-

tracked Edison's application. After the

college completed a self-study, the agency

agreed to dispatch an evaluation team

outside of its regular visitation cycle.

Edison's two-year nursing program is

accredited by the NLNAC, and trustee

chairwoman Ann Berlam believes that

strong relationshtp was beneficial during

Edison '8 time of need.

"We're pleased it happened sooner than

later," Serlam said. "It's just a matter of

getting approval."

A normal evaluation consists of interviews,

tours, classroom observations, document

reviews and visits to see students in action

at area medical offices or hospitals. College

officials initially hoped the NLNAG would

issue accreditation prior to spring

commencement, which is May 3 and May 4,

so those students could graduate from an

accredited program. The commission isn't

schedule to meet, however, until July.

in August after it was confirmed that the

four-year nursing program not only lacked

accreditation, but no one ever applied for

it. Kay Burniston, vice president for

baccalaureate programs at 81. PetersburgCoil ege, said representatives from Edison

contacted St. Pete last fal! about a potential

agreement in which the Pinellas institution

would operate a nursing program on

Edison's campus.

"We would look forward to a partnership,

but haven't talked about anything since

then," Burniston said.

Edison maintains partnerships with two

other institutlons. Broward College runs a

physical therapy assistant program at

Edison, while Hillsborough Community

College oversees opticianry, eye care

technician, ophthalmic lab technician and

visual assessment programs. The benefit

from partnerships, Burniston said, is that

students don't have to leave town for a

degree program that otherwise wouldn't be

offered !ocally.

Mary Myers, Edison's interim dean of

professional and technical studies, said

administration is not looking at Plan B.

"Right now, our full focus is on

accreditation," Myers said.
