CELL TRANSPORTMOVING MATERIAL ACROSS THE CELL MEMBRANE
PASSIVE TRANSPORT
• Movement of materials across the cell membrane must be regulated to maintain homeostasis inside the cell.
CELL MEMBRANE- IDENTIFY THE COMPONENTS
BACKGROUND INFO
• Solute- what is dissolved in solution
• Solvent- what does the dissolving- often water
• Solution- solute + solvent
PASSIVE TRANSPORT #1
• Diffusion- Solute particles move from an area of high concentration to low concentration
• Example – food coloring and water
• No use of cellular energy
EXAMPLES ON BOARD
• Use your whiteboards to predict movement of solute.
FACILITATED DIFFUSION- PASSIVE TRANSPORT 2
• Solute molecules pass through protein channels and diffuse faster than expected
• Kind of like a short cut
• Still passive transport- not cellular energy required
PASSIVE TRANSPORT #3
• Osmosis- water moves from low solute concentration to high solute concentration, or the water moves from area of high water concentration to low- still a type of diffusion
• The big idea is that the solvent moves not the solute
• These processes happen to achieve equilibrium or balance
• Aquaporins- channel proteins that allow water to pass
• Osmotic pressure- water pressure due to osmosis
EXAMPLES OF OSMOSIS ON BOARD
• Use your white boards.
