Product Bulletin Oil well cements are called on to perform several functions under a wide range of conditions. The same cement crew may be called out for a surface pipe job at 60°F circulating temperature at 2:30 am and a squeeze at 310°F that same afternoon. Any single cement, alone, cannot possibly fill the requirements for both of these jobs. However, with the proper choice of additives to change the properties of cement slurries, one or at most two basic cements can be modified to do almost any oilfield job. Chemplex stocks a variety of the more commonly used types of additives and has the expertise to formulate and supply more specialized products as well. The following descriptions of the types of cement additives and the typical performance that can be expected from Chemplex’s additives are intended only as a guide for the user. A table of cross-references to functionally similar additives is included on page 5. We strongly advise laboratory testing of cement slurries prepared with anyone’s additives, particularly at higher temperatures. Various classes, brands, and even batches of oilwell cement can respond very differently to many additives, and so the test results reported for individual products will not necessarily be reproduced by any currently available cement. The additives normally in stock are listed below with their primary functions: Chemplex C-11 High Temperature fluid loss/retarder Chemplex C-12 Moderate temperature fluid loss Chemplex C-16A Low temperature, non-retarding fluid loss Chemplex C-18, C-18L Wide range fluid loss Chemplex C-20, C-20L Lignosulfonate retarder for below 220°F Chemplex C-24, C-24L Lignosulfonate retarder for 200°F and up Chemplex C-26 CMHEC-based retarder Chemplex C-35 Cement dispersant, salt-tolerant Chemplex C-37, C-37L Conventional dispersant/friction reducer Chemplex C-41L, C41P Defoamers Chemplex C-43P, C-43L Thixotropic agent Chemplex C-44 Bonding improver, expansive additive Chemplex C-45 Accelerator/suspending agent Chemplex C-47 Gas migration/fluid loss Chemplex C-51 Suspension Additive Chemplex C-53L Surfactant for diesel/cement slurries Chemplex C-63

Product bulletins on each of these products are available from your Chemplex representative. The next few pages describe in general the functions of these types of products. Fluid Loss Additives Fluid loss additives are used in oilwell cement to reduce the amount of “filtrate” than can be squeezed out of the slurry under pressure. The standard lab test for fluid loss involves placing the slurry on a fine wire screen and applying 1000-psi nitrogen pressure for a 30-minute period. From the amount of water squeezed out, a calculation gives the “API Fluid Loss” in milliliters (mL). A slurry with no fluid loss control will usually have an API fluid loss of 1400 mL or more. For casing cementing, fluid loss values in the 100-200 mL range are often recommended, while for critical liners and some squeeze work, slurries with values of 50 mL or even lower have been used. Various fluid-loss additives work best in their own particular conditions. C-12 retards cement somewhat, and works best at moderate temperatures; C-11 is a fairly strong retarder and is not normally used much below a bottom-hole circulating temperature (BHCT) of 160°F. C-18 and C-18L are non-retarding at low temperatures and effective up to at least 300°F, but being synthetic copolymers are more expensive than the other additives. Retarders Retarders are used to lengthen the time a slurry remains pumpable, particularly at higher temperatures. As a consequence of this, they also of course delay strength development. Various retarders work best in different temperature ranges and slurry designs to give the optimum trade-off between enough pump time and “soon-enough” strength development. Chemplex offers three retarders (in addition to C-11 fluid loss additive, which can be used as a stand-alone retarder) to fit most situations. C-20 and C-24 are both based on lignosulfonates; these are proven performers, which tend to thin most slurries. C-20 is designed for use at BHCT’s up to about 210° or 220°F; above this temperature the loadings required become uneconomical. C-24 works best from about 200°F to 300°F or 325°F; below 200°F the difficulty in measuring the small loadings needed can give erratic behavior. Both C-20 and C-24 are also available in liquid form, indicated as C-20L and C-24L. If temperatures above the 300°-325°F range are encountered, the retarding action of C-24 can be intensified through the use Boric Acid, usually in a ratio of 3 parts C-24 to one part Boric Acid. Pilot testing of these slurries is necessary, as various cements have very different responses to the C-24 / Boric Acid mixture. With adequate lab design work, slurries may be designed for temperatures approaching 500°F.

Chemplex C-26 retarder is based on cellulose instead of lignosulfonate, and can be used to retard cements from BHCT’s of about 130° to 290°F. C-26 tends to thicken slurries, and is recommended if foamed or thixotropic cement must be retarded. Lignosulfonate retarders tend to destabilize foamed slurries, and interfere with

Page 7: Cementing

thixotropy. C-26 gives some fluid loss control to slurries. It is incompatible with calcium chloride, but may be used at low temperatures with (prehydrated!) C-45 to offset its retarding effects.

Dispersants/Friction Reducers Cement dispersants are used for their thinning effect on cement slurries, with two principal applications: lowering friction pressure of normal-weight slurries or preparing high-density cements that would normally be un-pumpably thick. Chemplex can supply either C-35, a very efficient, salt-tolerant product, or C-37, a conventional dispersant with no upper temperature limitations. Normal loadings of these are from about 0.3% to 1.0%, depending on cement characteristics, for thinning normal weight slurries. Dispersants are also used to mix heavyweight cements; Class H, for example, can be mixed at 18 lb/gal if either that density or the resulting very high strength is needed.

Excessive amounts of any dispersant can lead to over-thinning of slurries and excessive free water formation. When preparing densified slurries with dispersants, higher loadings of dispersant are frequently possible without excessive free water formation. Simple “coffee cup” tests can be run with particular cements to determine optimal loadings. Defoamers

Defoamers are almost always used in oil well cementing, not for any effect they have on the down hole properties of the slurry, but because they make mixing much easier. Because cement is usually blown to the mixer, it carries a lot of air with it. If this air gets trapped during mixing, it can make the slurry thicker, make your densometer read too light, and frequently can cause pumps to lose prime. A good defoamer will let air escape from the mix, minimizing these problems. Chemplex offers defoamers in either liquid or powder form. Liquid can be added to mix water or to the slurry at the point of mixing; some cementers use a garden sprayer to add C-41L as required. C-41P dry defoamer is normally dry-blended in cement. Thixotropic additives

Thixotropic cement is made in such a way that it mixes and pumps fairly easily, but gels up quickly if it is not flowing. This property can be very useful in situations where ordinary cement falls or washes away from where it is placed- for example, in squeezes of active water zones, or in plugs in open hole or in large casing. The “old reliable” thixotropic additive is gypsum at 10-to15% of cement. Gypsum works fairly well at low temperatures, but is hard to retard above about 140 degrees F, and can be tricky to mix due to its gelling in “dead spots” in the mixing equipment. Chemplex offers C-43 thixotropic agent, in either dry or liquid form, as an economical alternative to gypsum but with milder acceleration than gyp. These additives give you the option of running a thixotropic slurry on the spur of the moment, as they don’t need to be dry-blended like gypsum does.

Page 8: Cementing

Gas Migration and Bonding Additives

A variety of approaches have been used in the last 20 years or so to help with two sometimes related problems: gas flow in the annulus after cementing and poor bond logs. Research at major cementing companies has shown that two of the most important factors in getting a tight, leak-free cement job are good mud removal and good fluid-loss control. If the annulus is cleaned of mud residue, and if the cement doesn’t lose its water to the formation, the annulus will stay “full” of cement slurry and gas will have less opportunity to enter. Simply pumping an adequate volume of a turbulent-flow flush and controlling fluid loss to 100 mL or better will many times eliminate these problems.

Not all wells are cooperative, though. Some situations require more than just the

basics. Two additives that Chemplex furnishes can attack two faces of the gas flow/bonding problem. C-44 is an additive that causes cement to expand slightly as it sets. This expansion results in a better “grip” of the set cement on the pipe and formation, so that gas can’t find a flow path. C-47 additive changes the flow properties of the slurry, making it more liquid until it is actually on the point of setting. This property lets the slurry “drain” into pockets that might otherwise provide an entry point for gas. C-47 also has a highly efficient fluid-loss additive built in, so additional fluid loss control is not needed.

Chemplex, Ltd.

Product Bulletin

GENERAL INFORMATION Chemplex C-15 is a mildly retarding fluid loss additive for use at all temperatures below about 200°F. It thins, rather than thickens, typical slurries. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Specific gravity: 1.30 Absolute volume: 0.0924 gal/lb Appearance: Reddish powder Solubility in water: Limited by viscosity CHEMICAL DESCRIPTION Chemplex C-15 is a proprietary blend of polymeric additives. LIMITATIONS Chemplex C-15 is a fairly strong dispersant in typical applications, and therefore should be used with caution in lightweight cements. Excessive free water can result from overdispersion of lighter slurries. C-15 should not be used in cement designs containing more than 18% salt.

RECOMMENDED USES Typical loadings of Chemplex C-15 are from 0.6% to 1.0% by weight of cement in normal density slurries, and up to about 1.5% in lightweight designs. The table on the reverse of this page gives some example slurries. PACKAGING Chemplex C-15 is supplied in 50 pound bags. It is not a DOT regulated material. AVAILABILITY Chemplex C-15 is available from Chemplex, Ltd. at any of our stocking locations.

Product Bulletin

GENERAL INFORMATION Chemplex C-16A is a non-retarding fluid loss additive with particular application in lightweight slurries. It is highly effective at exceptionally low loadings – 0.5% or below – in many slurry designs. It can also be used at 1% to 2.5% loadings in “latex cement” designs. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Specific gravity: 1.33 Absolute volume: 0.0903 gal/lb Appearance: Pale yellow powder Solubility in water: Limited by viscosity CHEMICAL DESCRIPTION Chemplex C-16A is a proprietary blend of an advanced dispersant with a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). It is formulated with defoamer included to avoid the foaming problems sometimes seen with PVA products. LIMITATIONS Chemplex C-16A may lose some of its effectiveness in coarse-ground cements such as neat API Class H.

RECOMMENDED USES Typical loadings of Chemplex C-16A are from 0.5% to 0.8% by weight of cement in normal or lightweight slurries. Pozzolan appears to enhance the performance of this additive. The table on the reverse of this page gives some example slurries. Chemplex C-16A has almost no effect on slurry viscosity below about 140° F, and begins to thicken slurries slightly above that temperature. This property can aid in controlling free water, particularly in lighter designs. PACKAGING Chemplex C-16A is supplied in 50 pound bags. It is not a DOT regulated material. AVAILABILITY Chemplex C16A is available from Chemplex, Ltd. at any of our stocking locations.

Product Bulletin

GENERAL INFORMATION Chemplex C-44 is a powdered additive, which provides expansion during set for all types of oil well cement. It can be used both to improve cement bond to pipe and to combat gas migration.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Specific gravity: 4.5 Appearance: Grey, heavy powder Absolute volume: 0.0267 gal/lb Bulk Density: 88 lb/cu.ft. Solubility in Water: Insoluble CHEMICAL DESCRIPTION Chemplex C-44 is a finely powdered reactive metal blended with a reaction-moderating inorganic salt.

LIMITATIONS Chemplex C-44 functions by generating highly flammable hydrogen gas as the cement slurry sets. Caution should be taken to keep sources of ignition away when mixing, placing, or drilling out C-44 slurries.

Some cements and pozzolans with higher-than-average alkali content will react fairly rapidly with C-44, causing early expansion. This is often only a problem in cup samples, which will “puff up” and set poorly. DO NOT attempt to catch samples in a sealed container, as enough pressure may develop to burst the container.

RECOMMENDED USES Chemplex C-44 is normally effective at loadings of 0.4 to 1.5 pounds per sack of cement. Higher loadings are normally used for deeper wells, as more gas must be generated under higher hydrostatic pressure to give proper expansion.

PACKAGING Chemplex C-44 is furnished in 50-pound lined boxes. Opened containers should be tightly closed to preserve integrity of product. AVAILABILITY Chemplex C-44 is available from Chemplex, Ltd. at any of our stocking locations.

GENERAL INFORMATION Chemplex C-45 is a suspension aid for preparing lightweight slurries from all types of oil well cement. It may also be used as an accelerator.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Specific gravity: 2.4 Appearance: White granules Absolute volume: 0.0499 gal/lb Bulk Density: 70 lb/cu.ft. Solubility in Water: Soluble CHEMICAL DESCRIPTION Chemplex C-45 contains alkali silicates. LIMITATIONS Chemplex C-45 is an accelerator, and slurries using it may be difficult to retard at temperatures above about 140 degrees unless special attention is given to slurry design.

RECOMMENDED USES Chemplex C-45 is normally effective at loadings of 1 to 3 pounds per sack of cement. A table with suggested loadings for several lightweight designs is on the back of this page. C-45 is normally dry-blended into the cement, but may be prehydrated IF a portion of the cement is mixed into the water BEFORE the C-45 is added. If the C-45 is added first, it will not provide good suspension. C-45 can be used as an accelerator for cements containing C-11 or other retarding additives by taking advantage of this; prehydrating C-45 in clean mix water will allow slurries to be mixed at or near normal density.

PACKAGING Chemplex C-45 is furnished in 50-pound bags. AVAILABILITY Chemplex C-45 is available from Chemplex, Ltd. at any of our stocking locations.

GENERAL INFORMATION Chemplex C-53L is a surfactant designed to allow mixing of cement slurries in diesel oil. These slurries will not set until contacted by water, and so can be used in a variety of remedial work in oil and gas wells. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Density: 7.6 lb/gallon Appearance: dark brown liquid Flash Point: 57 deg F Solubility in Water: Dispersible Solubility in diesel: Complete CHEMICAL DESCRIPTION Chemplex C-53L is a strongly cationic, oil-soluble surfactant/dispersant in an alcohol base. LIMITATIONS Chemplex C-53L is designed to be used in cement slurries made with dry diesel or kerosene. It should not be used with slurries containing either bentonite (gel) or pozzolan.

RECOMMENDED USES Chemplex C-53L is normally added to dry diesel oil or kerosene at a loading of 1.0 gallon per hundred gallons of oil. This mixture is then used to prepare a cement slurry, most typically at 5.0 or 6.0 gallons per sack of cement. These two mixing ratios give a 15.1 lb/gal slurry at a yield of 1.15 cu.ft./sk and 14.3 lb/gal and 1.28 cu.ft./sk, respectively.

This type of slurry can then be used to squeeze a wet zone or hole in pipe, regardless of depth. As the slurry contains no water, it will not set until it contacts some. Once contact with water occurs, the C-53L helps draw water into the slurry. This results in an immediate thickening to a pasty consistency, followed by the cement setting. A 24-hour WOC time is normally advised to insure that enough water absorbs into the slurry to give good strength development. A suggested placement procedure for diesel/cement slurries is to pump 3 to 5 barrels of dry diesel through the mixer and down the well to remove any water; mixing will be VERY difficult if the slurry is contaminated with water. Then mix and pump the slurry, displacing with diesel or clean crude oil. Unset, undisplaced slurry can be reversed out. The only additives that are really useful in diesel/cement slurries are calcium chloride at 1 to 2% or gypsum at 10 to 25%. These can give quicker strength development. Retarders, etc., serve no real purpose in diesel, as no set is possible until water is encountered anyway.

PACKAGING Chemplex C-53L is supplied in 5-gallon pails or 55-gallon drums. It is regulated by the US DOT as a Flammable liquid, nos. AVAILABILITY Chemplex C-53L is available from Chemplex, Ltd. at any of our stocking locations.

GENERAL INFORMATION Sodium Silicate is a highly cost-effective chemical for a variety of oilwell uses where cement alone is not quite the right answer. Sodium silicate has a long history of successful field application in:

• Improving cement-to-pipe and cement-to-formation bonding. • Stopping lost circulation • sealing casing leaks. • Shutting off bottom water or thief zones.

This bulletin will outline some suggested uses for this versatile product; contact Chemplex or your service company representative for specifics on particular applications

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Density: 11.7 lb./gal Solubility in water: Soluble Solubility in diesel: Insoluble Appearance: Clear to hazy viscous

liquid Odor: None pH: around 11 Flash point: 30-35° F

CHEMICAL DESCRIPTION Sodium silicate is furnished as a 40% active solution containing sodium polysilicates in water. It is highly reactive with cement slurries, acids, or salts, particularly calcium or magnesium salts. Sodium silicate should be protected from freezing, as it will occasionally separate and become unusable if frozen and then thawed.

LIMITATIONS There are no particular temperature limitations on the use of sodium silicate in properly designed applications. Unintentional mixing of

sodium silicate with incompatible materials will cause a variety of major headaches; the procedures below point out ways to avoid these problems. Fresh water must always be used to separate sodium silicate from incompatible materials during placement.

RECOMMENDED USES A. As a cement preflush

Sodium silicate is frequently used as a preflush ahead of primary cement jobs. It can improve cement bonding and aid in preventing cement “fallback” in many areas. A typical procedure where lost circulation is not a major concern is as follows:

1. Pump at least 10 barrels of fresh water, diesel, or other compatible

spacer 2. Pump a solution of one part sodium

silicate dissolved in four parts fresh water. Best mud displacement and boding are normally seen when the volume of this mixture is enough to give at least 5 minutes contact time with the formation during placement; for instance, if you mix and displace cement at 6BPM, use 30 barrels of this silicate solution

3. Pump a fresh water spacer large enough to give at least 125 feet of fill downhole. Always use at least 3-5 barrels of fresh water to avoid leaving solids in pumps, lines, or pipe.

4. Pump at least 10 barrels of fresh water, diesel, or other compatible

spacer B. For lost circulation

Sodium silicate’s high reactivity with calcium in brines is used to build a barrier of “petrified cottage cheese” in lost circulation zones. If formation

Sodium Silicate

Page 53: Cementing

fluids are not very salty, with high calcium content, it is strongly recommended that calcium chloride brine preflush, as outlined below, be used. 1. . Pump at least 20 bbl of a 10%

calcium chloride solution (35 lb dry calcium chloride per barrel of fresh or field salt water) to the loss zone.

2. Pump a spacer of 3 to 5 barrels fresh water

3. Pump at least 10 barrels of sodium silicate; use the straight material for severe losses, or mix half-and –half with fresh water if less that total lost circulation.

4. Pump another 3 to 5 barrels fresh water spacer; displace to loss zone with salt water or mud. Local experience may indicate that repeated stages of (1) through (4), with smaller volumes of calcium chloride solution in (1), may be more effective in stopping losses.

5. Optionally, a squeeze with cement containing bridging agents such as gilsonite may be run after step 4. The cement should flash-set on contacting sodium silicate in the formation.

C. Sealing Casing Leaks Moderate to severe casing leaks can frequently be permanently repaired with a procedure similar to the lost circulation procedure above. Volumes used will vary widely depending on casing size and other local conditions. The big advantage of sodium silicate over cement in repairing casing leaks is that the silicate contains no solid particles to bridge off at the leaks. This lets sealant get outside the leak, where it is actually needed. A cement squeeze behind the silicate treatment is optional, depending on local experience and severity of the leak.

D. BOTTOM-WATER SHUT OFF If a reasonable guess can be made as to the point-of-entry of bottom water, the lost-circulation procedure above can also be modified to provide a permanent shut-off. Care needs to be taken to avoid placing sodium silicate in productive zones, as it is very difficult to remove once it is set. A generalized method for water shutoff might be:

1. Pull production equipment. Set a packer or cement retainer immediately above the wet zone, or perforate into the water below existing perforations. Test for injectivity into both the wet zone and the producing zone, using formation-compatible fluids.

2. Pump a formation-compatible fluid such as formation brine, clean crude oil, or diesel down the backside while pumping 10-20 bbl 10% calcium chloride brine down tubing into the wet zone. Continue injection, into the productive zone throughout the entire procedure.

3. Follow the calcium chloride brine with a 3 to 5 barrel fresh-water spacer

4. Pump 10 to 20 bbl sodium silicate, either straight or mixed 1:1 with fresh water.

5. Displace the silicate to the wet formation; again, local experience may determine whether a cement squeeze should follow the silicate treatment. If cement is run, a 3-5 bbl fresh water spacer is all that is required to separate step (4) from the cement.

6. Allow normal WOC time before returning well to production.

GENERAL INFORMATION Chemplex Stop Loss Spacer is an industry proven, highly effective spacer used to control moderate to severe loss circulation during cementing and drilling. Chemplex Stop Loss Spacer is composed of Stop Loss Polymer and Stop Loss LCM and when mixed is a dark brown moderately viscous fluid. Conventional weighting agents such as barite and hematite can be used to weight the Stop Loss Spacer to 18.0 ppg. During cementing, the Stop Loss Spacer is pumped directly ahead of the cement to stop mud losses, attain higher cement tops and more consistent anticipated “top of cement”. The Stop Loss Polymer has a “wall building” capability to help consolidate loose, fragile or fractured formation strata and hole condition. The Stop Loss LCM is added where moderate to severe loss circulation is experienced. The Stop Loss Spacer is also an effective cement spacer used to displace drilling mud prior to cementing for improved cement bonding and subsequent bond logs. Where oil based or invert muds are displaced, surfactants are utilized to water wet the formation and pipe surfaces for enhanced bonding. During drilling where severe to total loss circulation is experienced, the Stop Loss Spacer, containing the Stop Loss Polymer and LCM, is pumped into the drill string and circulated until the losses are controlled and drilling can resume to the desired depth (TD). PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Stop Loss Polymer LCM Specific Gravity: 1.2 1.4-1.65 Water Solubility: Dispersible Dispersible Oil Solubility: Dispersible Dispersible Appearance: Light brown Light brown powder fibrous powder

CHEMICAL DESCRIPTION Chemplex Stop Loss Spacer incorporates Stop Loss Polymer, a non-hazardous highly bio-degradable proprietary patented of polymeric fluid loss additives. Stop Loss LCM is added where moderate to severe loss circulation is experienced and is a patented blend of highly specific lost circulation additives that target and control loss circulation. Stop Loss Spacer utilizes a specialized surfactant to water wet the formation when used with oil based or invert muds.

LIMITATIONS Chemplex Stop Loss Spacer can be removed by fresh water. Fresh water spacers should not be pumped between the cement slurry and Stop Loss Spacer. Limit washing-up to 1 bbl to 2 bbls of fresh water. Stop Loss Spacer is not compatible with other spacers when pumped between the Stop Loss Spacer and cement although; spacers may be pumped ahead of the Stop Loss Spacer. Special water-wetting surfactants are utilized when displacing oil based or invert muds. Once the Stop Loss Spacer has stopped the loss circulation, maintain a positive wellbore pressure to maintain the Stop Loss Spacer seal. Avoid reducing the wellbore pressure (HH) to less than the formation pressure (underbalanced) where the Stop Loss Spacer can unseal and revert to loss circulation. RECOMMENDED USES Chemplex Stop Loss Spacer is used eliminate or significantly reduce loss circulation during cementing or drilling. Stop Loss Spacer is used where a “wall building” polymer is needed to consolidate weak, loose or fragile formation strata or hole condition. Stop Loss Spacer is used to sustain a higher and more consistent “Top of Cement” thereby reducing remediation costs. Stop Loss Spacer is also used as a spacer to efficiently displace drilling mud to enhance cement to pipe and cement to formation bonding.

GENERAL INFORMATION Chemplex Plexcrete SFA is an industry proven substitute for the silica fume in silica fume cements used for its increased handling ease and safety. Plexcrete SFA, when used in the same concentrations as silica fume and mixed at the same density attains near identical compressive strengths as silica fume in cements. Plexcrete SFA can be blown directly into a silo without the expensive blending that is required with silica fume such as Silica-Poz, Silica-Blend, Silica-Lite, etc. Plexcrete SFA is a lower cost alternative to silica fume that is specifically formulated to produce performance and consistency without the TTT variations of the silica fume “byproduct”. Plexcrete SFA is a highly specialized blend of silica, metals and inorganic salts fired in a kiln for a product quality that conforms to ASTM specifications. Plexcrete SFA is a highly specific formulation that does not require the extremely fine particle size of silica fume to develop the compressive strength of fume cements. Plexcrete SFA provides increased safety, direct pneumatic transfer to the silo, product consistency and reduced cost with the high compressive strength development of fume cements. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Specific Gravity: 2.30 Bulk Density: 33 lb/cubic foot Absolute Volume: 0.0521 gallon/pound CHEMICAL DESCRIPTION Chemplex Plexcrete SFA incorporates a proprietary blend of silica, iron and inorganic salts fired in a kiln to exacting ASTM specifications (ASTM C-188, ASTM C-227, ASTM C-311, ASTM C-430, ASTM C-1012 and ASTM C-1260). ASTM particle specifications require 76% pass through a 325 (45 um) sieve.

RECOMMENDED USES Chemplex Plexcrete SFA is used to replace silica fume or flyash:silica fume blends in cement systems that have historically utilized silica fume. Plexcrete SFA replaces silica fume pound for pound in cement systems such as: Fly-Ash Class C Plexcrete SFA Density 15 lbs 61 lbs 11 lbs 13.0-14.5 ppg 20 lbs 47 lbs 17 lbs 12.0-13.6 ppg 17 lbs 70 lbs 13 lbs 12.0-12.5 ppg Chemplex Plexcrete SF uses and benefits: 1. Industry proven replacement for silica fume. 2. Used in oil field cementing since 2004. 3. Significantly less hazardous than silica fume. 4. Develops the near identical 72 hr compressive

strengths as silica fume in fume cements. 5. Lowers the cost of silica fume in cements. 6. Can be blown directly into the cement silos. 7. Silica fume and fly-ash blends are not needed. 8. Mined and manufactured to ASTM standards. 9. Allows use of lightweight completion cements. 10. Used with fly-ash to control final slurry costs. 11. SMS, HEC & Salt are commonly used to

control Total Thickening Times & Fluid Loss. 12. Compatible with most cement additives.

LIMITATIONS Chemplex Plexcrete SFA when used as a replacement for silica fume will yield slightly lower slurry viscosity, slightly longer Total Thickening Times, and slightly higher fluid loss. The use of low concentrations of sodium meta-silicate (SMS), i.e., 0.1%, etc., will increase the slurry viscosity and reduce the Total Thickening Times to nominal values. Cellulose fluid loss additives can be used to obtain the desired fluid loss and Total Thickening Times per customer specifications. Plexcrete SFA is compatible with most cement additives. Slurry performance data is included in the attached Technical Information.

Plexcrete STE replaces other aluminum type additives pound for pound: Fly-Ash:Class C Plexcrete STE Density 0: 94 lbs 4%-6% 10.5- 12.0 ppg 35:65 4% 12.0-13.0 ppg 40:60 4% 13.6-13.8 ppg 60:40 4% 13.6-13.8 ppg Chemplex Plexcrete STE uses and benefits: 1. Replaces more expensive strength enhancers. 2. Significantly less hazardous than silica fume. 3. Develops near identical compressive strengths

than more expensive additives at 200F or less. 4. Develops higher compressive strengths than

more expensive additives at greater than 200F. 5. Especially effective in flyash:cement blends

and ideally in 40:60 and 60:40 blends. 6. Lower the cost of using strength enhancers. 7. Mined and manufactured to ASTM standards. 8. Allows use of lightweight completion cements. 9. Compatible with most cement additives, i.e.,

HEC, PVA, Lignosulfonate retarders, salts etc.

LIMITATIONS Chemplex Plexcrete STE will increase the final slurry cost which can be offset with flyash:cement blends especially 40:60 which may yield lower cementing costs and high compressive strengths that can be used as completion cements. The use of Flyash is beneficial to reducing cement permeability and increasing resistance to corrosive waters, gasses such as H2S, CO2, etc. Plexcrete STE is compatible with most cement additives. Slurry performance data is included in the attached Technical Information.

GENERAL INFORMATION Plexaid StatFree is a powdered additive intended to reduce “static cling” encountered in pneumatic conveying of cement blends, pozzolan or silica fume, frac sand, resin-coated proppants, and similar materials. It can provide improved conveying of these materials by reducing blockages and “wormholing” in bins.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Solubility in water: Insoluble Appearance: Fine white powder Odor: Faintly medicinal Flash point: None Ionic Charge: Cationic

CHEMICAL DESCRIPTION Plexaid StatFree contains proven antistatic agents absorbed on an inert non-crystalline silica carrier. At recommended loadings it should not significantly affect the properties of cement slurries or of frac fluids.

RECOMMENDED USES Plexaid StatFree is typically used at 0.02% to 0.05% by weight of the dry material being treated. It should be added to the solids at the earliest opportunity during handling; for example, as the first component in a cement blend. Dosage level will depend on the particular material being treated. It is suggested that 0.05% be used as a starting point, backing off or increasing loading depending on local experience.

PACKAGING Plexaid StatFree is obtainable in 50-pound bags. DOT information: Not Regulated under D.O.T. Dust may be irritating.

AVAILABILITY Plexaid StatFree is available from Chemplex, Ltd. at any of our distribution facilities. Created 13 August 2010

GENERAL INFORMATION Plexfoam C-7 is a product designed for foaming cement for oilfield applications.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Density: 8.66 lb/gal Absolute volume: 0.115 gal/lb Solubility in water: Soluble Appearance: Yellow liquid Odor: Faint rubbing alcohol Flash Point: > 200°F Freeze Point: 5°F pH: 5.0 – 7.5

CHEMICAL DESCRIPTION Plexfoam C-7 foamer combines amphoteric and anionic foaming agents in an alcohol/water carrier. As some of the components are ammonium salts, cement slurries containing Plexfoam C-7 may smell like ammonia.

TREATING APPLICATIONS Plexfoam C-7 at loadings of around 0.1 gallon/sack will provide excellent foam stability in normal foamed cement designs. It is widely held to be good practice to avoid the use of dispersants, highly dispersing additives like lignosulfonate retarders, and, of course, defoamers in foamed cement designs. Chemplex C-18 as a fluid-loss additive and Chemplex C-26 as a retarder are suggested to avoid foam stability problems.

PACKAGING Plexfoam C-7 is obtainable in 55 gallon poly drums or poly totes. DOT information: Not DOT regulated

AVAILABILITY Plexfoam C-7 is available from Chemplex, Ltd. at any of our stocking locations.

Product Bulletin

GENERAL INFORMATION MC-500 is a form of cement with a particle size about one-tenth that of API oilwell cements. This small size makes it very useful for sealing small leaks, a job that can be difficult with conventional cement squeezes.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Specific gravity: 2.9 Appearance: Tan powder Absolute volume: 0.0414 gal/lb Solubility in water: Insoluble; reacts

CHEMICAL DESCRIPTION MC-500 is a cement prepared from blast-furnace slag. It is chemically similar to a high sulfate resistant (HSR) oil well cement.

LIMITATIONS MC-500 should not be mixed at densities over 12.0 lb/gallon, as it will be very thick above that density. The use of C-35 dispersant at 0.5% to 1% is strongly suggested both for mixability and for best performance in penetrating leaks. MC-500 is compatible with most conventional oil well cement additives, though it will require more retarder than conventional cements. Fluid loss additives are not normally used with MC-500.

.

RECOMMENDED USES MC-500 can be mixed according to the following schedule. The sack basis is 55 pounds of product. Density Mix water Yield 11.0 lb/gal 11.60 gal/sk 1.84 cu. ft./sk 11.5 lb/gal 9.31 gal/sk 1.55 cu. ft./sk 12.0 lb/gal 7.73 gal/sk 1.33 cu. ft./sk Examples of some slurries are on the following page. MC-500 should be considered for repair of collar leaks, pinhole leaks in pipe, micro-annulus leaks, or any situation where conventional cement will not penetrate.

PACKAGING MC-500 is furnished in 55-pound lined bags. Opened containers should be tightly closed to preserve integrity of product. AVAILABILITY MC-500 is available from Chemplex facilities in Snyder, Texas or from any of our stocking locations.
