The Creche became a home for a lot of abandoned children, whatever their religion, their story, their origin and a shelter for mothers in crisis. Later on, due to the aggravation of the social environment in the country, the crib welcomed more and more children from divorced, divided families, from addicted or jailed parents.

The Holy Family Crèche is still more than ever a home for children.

Since November 1994, the town of Bethlehem has been established as a part of the Palestinian territories. So, all the children we welcome, it means from the birth to 6 years old, are confined to us by the social Palestinian administration. They come from all over the Palestinian territories, that is to say, from Gaza to Jericho, not to mention Samarie and Judee. Indeed, we are the single organization in the territories recognized and equipped to look after such a public.

Presently, we are welcoming close to 110 babies and children. Amongst them, some are abandoned from their birth and some are serious social cases. The first ones can be found on street, in bins, in front of hospital's entrance, on the foot of mosques or churches. They are mostly brought to us by the police.

Otherwise, until the last Intifada, the pregnant adolescents or the pregnancy out of marriage or from adulterous relationships, used to come to find a shelter into our walls. Then, after the delivery in our maternity, they could leave in the crib their baby. Now a days, these women have more difficulties to reach us because of blockage and check-points.

The main difficulty in our work is the way of thinking of the local people. The most important for most, before any other consideration, is the respect of the religious morality and of the tradition, whatever the consequences for some people, particularly children, as abandoned. Those abandoned are considered as children of the muslim state, and her full adoption is not recognized by the law. Morever, without the recognizance by a father, they cannot obtain a certificate of birth and have a family name, which makes all their life harder to do anything. Just tutelage is allowed for such a child, but he still cannot neither have a family name, nor inheritance from the family, according to the muslim law. However, we succeed from time to time, but more and more hardly, to make fully adopted these children by Christian Palestinian or foreign families, even by muslim families able to present the child as their own. What a joy for us!

The number of abandoned children is increasing and women are more and more victims of violence. This climate makes our mission more risky. Our presence in Bethlehem reminds still a deep need in this hard time. We must still give aids, hope and dignity to the poorest and smallest.

Be assured, dear friends, of our deep appreciation for your kind gesture and interest in our mission. May the Lord shower you and your beloved ones with his choicest blessings.

With our sincere friendship Soeur Sophie Boueri
