On behalf of the Board of Education and the Ann Arbor Public Schools family, it gives me great pleasure to support the exceptional music program in our school district which has bought us all together to enjoy this centennial concert. The Ann Arbor Public Schools continues to honor and support the rich and long-standing legacy of music education established by our predecessors. The performances that you will enjoy this evening are a testament to the commitment of these students, their teachers, their families and our community to the tradition of musical

excellence. We are extremely proud of these talented musicians from our high schools, Community, Huron, Pioneer and Skyline, and are thrilled that

they are with us to celebrate 100 years of great music in Ann Arbor. I am confident that you will be delighted by the phenomenal performances that you will experience this evening. Thank you for supporting great music in the Ann Arbor Public Schools.

Program NotesAnd Though We Wander, commissioned by David A. Leach and the Pioneer Band Association, Inc., with financial support given in memory of Pioneer Band alumna Lisa Tubbs, was premiered by the Pioneer Symphony Band at the Michigan Music Conference in Grand Rapids in January. Written in honor of the centen-nial celebration, And Though We Wander is composed by John W. Stout and uses the musical motifs and material from Ann Arbor High School’s Alma Mater The Purple and White, music by Earl V. Moore (for whom the University of Michigan’s School of Music building is named), and the school song Push On, penned by William Champion and arranged by famous U-M musical alumnus Jerry Bilik. Actually, And Though We Wander got its inspiration from another famous Bilik work, Victors Val-iant, which uses musical motifs from two other familiar tunes often heard through-out Ann Arbor each fall, namely, The Victors and The Yellow and the Blue.

Redline Tango takes its title from two sources. The first is the common term of “redlining an engine,” or, pushing it to the limit. In the case of this score, “redline” also refers to the “red line,” or the IRT subway line (2 & 3 trains) of the New York subway system, which was the train that went between composer John Mackey’s apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and BAM, where this work was premiered. The piece is in three sections. The first section is the initial virtuosic “redlining” section, with constantly driving 16th notes and a gradual increase in intensity. After the peak comes the second section, the “tango,” which is rather light, and even a bit sleazy. The material for the tango is derived directly from the first section of the work. A transition leads back to an even “redder” version of the first section, with one final pop at the end.

Les Halles is the bustling finale from Martin Ellerby’s Paris Sketches, a four-move-ment work that pays tribute to the city Ellerby loves. Each movement pays homage to some part of the French capital and to other composers who lived, worked or passed through. Running like a unifying thread through the entire piece is the idea of bells – a prominent feature of Paris life. In Les Halles, the bells are brilliant and triumphant and celebrate the old market area of Paris. In the final measures, Ellerby weaves in a climactic quote from Hector Berlioz’s Te Deum.

As its title suggests, Blue Shades alludes to the Blues, and a jazz feeling is prevalent, however, it is not literally a Blues piece. There is not a single 12-bar blues progression to be found, and except for a few isolated sections, the eighth-note is not swung. The work, however, is heavily influenced by the Blues: “Blue notes” are used constantly; blues harmonies, rhythms, and melodic idioms pervade the work; and many “shades of blue” are depicted, from bright blue, to dark, to dirty, to hot blue. A slow and quiet middle section recalls the atmosphere of a dark, smoky blues haunt. An extended clarinet solo played near the end recalls Benny Goodman’s hot playing style, and ushers in a series of “wailing” brass chords recalling the train whistle effects commonly used during the swing era.

One of the central figures of British music, Ralph Vaughn Williams composed Toccata Marziale for the Commemoration of the British Empire Exhibition of 1924. It was his second work for wind band. Toccata Marziale abounds with energy and rhythmical vigor. The work’s predominate feature is the juxtaposition of contrapuntal woodwind and brass lines and tonal masses. Vaughan Wil-liams’ superb scoring exploits the sonorities of the wind band. It is a brilliantly integrated virtuoso piece.

To the Sky is a new concert band work (2012) written for the first graduat-ing class of Skyline High School. At the invitation of Director of Bands Jason Smith, Jim Stephenson traveled to Skyline in the Spring of 2011 to meet with the students, and to hear the band play. He was immediately struck with a “wonderful spirit and high level of music making.” Says Stephenson: “It was fun to interact with the students as one by one they pleaded with me to give them a solo, or make sure their section had a good part...More than anything I wanted to celebrate the atmosphere surrounding the excitement of a new school having its first ever graduating class. I wanted to capture the promise that the future holds for these young individuals; the sense of anticipation, and the sense of transition from one stage of life into another. Obviously, the title is a reference to this piece dedicated “To the Sky”-line students, but also represents my encour-agement to them to take their dreams and persevere without limit.

Michael Daugherty first came to interna-tional attention when his Metropolis Symphony was performed by the Baltimore Symphony at Carnegie Hall in 1994.

Since that time, Daugherty’s music has entered the orchestral, band and chamber music reper-toire and made him, according to the League of American Orchestras, one of the ten most per-formed American composers of concert music in the world today.

Born in 1954 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Daugherty is the son of a dance-band drummer and the oldest of five brothers, all professional musicians. Evelyn Prins Daugherty, daughter of Michael Daugherty and Yopie Prins, played bassoon in

the Pioneer High School Band from 2004-2007.

Daugherty studied music composition at Yale University, I.R.C.A.M. (Paris) and the Hamburg Hochschule für Musik. His composition teachers included Jacob Druckman, Roger Reynolds, Earle Brown and György Ligeti. Daugh-erty was also an assistant to jazz arranger Gil Evans in New York from 1980 to 1982. In 1991, Daugherty joined the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance as Professor of Composition, where he is a mentor to many of today’s most talented young composers. Daugherty is also a frequent guest of professional orchestras, festivals, universities and conservatories around the world. In 2011, the Nashville Symphony’s Naxos recording of Daugherty’s Metropolis Symphony and Deus ex Machina was honored with three GRAM-MY® Awards, including Best Classical Contemporary Composition. His Naxos recordings of orchestral music include UFO, Colorado Symphony, Marin Alsop (1999); Fire and Blood, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Neemi Järvi (2005); Me-tropolis Symphony, Nashville Symphony, Giancarlo Guerrero (2009); Route 66, Bournemouth Symphony, Marin Alsop (2010) and Mount Rushmore, Pacific Symphony, Carl St.Clair (2012). Daugherty’s music is published by Peermusic Classical, Faber Music, Boosey and Hawkes and Michael Daugherty Music.

The following is an abbreviated version of an article written by Daryl Hurst, which appeared in the June 2006 issue of the Ann Arbor Observer.

usic had been part of the curriculum when Ann Arbor opened one of the nation’s first high schools in 1856, but over the school’s first 50 years, the battles over academ-ics versus arts ensured that music courses never stayed in

place very long. Music instruction usually took the form of singing or piano, leaving instrumental ensembles to be formed by students as extra-curriculars. The first was a Banjo Club in 1892, followed by a mandolin club in 1895. What could be considered the first orchestra at Ann Arbor High also formed in 1895, but like its successors over the next several years, it was more of a dance band and usually had more winds than strings.

When a spectacular New Year’s Eve fire consumed the school building in 1904, classes were forced to meet in community buildings, and the formation of music ensembles stalled. But when a new and better Ann Arbor High School opened in 1907, school life resumed quickly, and student music groups re-formed.

Meanwhile, music was flourishing at the U-M, much to the benefit of nearby Ann Arbor High. In 1914, Earl V. Moore of the School of Music set Margaret Cooley’s Purple and White to music, giving Ann Arbor High its alma mater. (William Champion later composed Push On, the school fight song.) And during the 1913–1914 school year, the first instrumental ensemble of strictly wind and percussion instruments — what we identify as a band — was formed at Ann Arbor High.

1913-14 1914-15

Page 22: Centennial Concert - Squarespace · centennial concert. ... Toccata Marziale by Ralph Vaughan Williams, ed. by Frank L. Battisti To The Sky by James M. Stephenson Conducted by Jason

The 1914 Omega credits principal W. Merton Aikin with leading the call for players. Eighteen boys were selected, and the new band made its first appearance at the Muskegon football game that fall.

The band formed again in the 1914–1915 school year. It marched at football games and the city’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and presented a joint concert in the spring with the orchestra and glee club. Perhaps derailed by the U.S.’s entry into World War I, however, the band then disappeared for another decade. It would take a visionary man to re-define the band and make it a permanent fixture at Ann Arbor High School. That man was Joe Maddy, who went on to create the world-famous National Music Camp at Interlochen, and who today is considered by many to be the father of instrumental music in the public schools of America.

Maddy was called to Ann Arbor in the fall of 1924 by Earl Moore, who had just become head of the U-M School of Music. With thrifty ingenuity, Moore arranged for Maddy to work half-time as head of music education at the U-M and half-time as music supervisor in the Ann Arbor Public Schools. Maddy’s enthusiasm and vision for advancing music education would find fertile ground in Ann Arbor. In his three years at Ann Arbor High, Maddy re-formed the band and orchestra. An innovative instructor, he established the early traditions of musical excellence at the school. Maddy was also a good promoter, persuading the administration to provide funds for instruments and working with the local Rotary Club to purchase new uniforms. Because of confusion with the school administration over course definitions, academic credits, and scheduling, however, the band and orchestra comprised the same students, who would simply play different instruments on different days.

The influence of Joe Maddy and Interlochen on the world of high school music is legendary, but not everybody appreciated his groundbreaking work. In his book Interlochen, A Home for the Arts, Dean Boal relates how Ann Arbor school superintendent Otto Haisley, hired the same year as Maddy, grew increasingly frustrated with his employee’s new venture in northern Michigan. Haisley called Maddy “a crazy damn fool” for undertaking “a fool project like the camp” and fired him from the public schools. (Maddy’s own version, as told to Verne

The William Chapman era, which sees an expansion of the band program (to record 58 students), the admittance of the first female musicians, and new, snappy military marching style.

After Maddy’s departure the band and orchestra became more distinct, with different conductors, different rehearsal times, and different members. But in a reprise of Maddy’s double duty, Nicholas Falcone, the newly hired Director of Bands at the U-M, also directed the band at Ann Arbor High for the 1927–1928 school year.

This was the same year that the Michigan Stadium opened, and Falcone was busy introducing military-style drill into the Michigan Marching Band’s on-field performances. He soon found his work at the U-M consumed all his time, so he did not continue in the high school position.

Falcone’s succesor, William Champion, was the first of many long-serving directors. He expanded the band program, oversaw the admittance of the first female musicians, and gave the marching band a snappy military style. He also worked to make the band a strong concert ensemble, adding instruments not used in marching like the oboe, the bassoon, and the alto and bass clarinet. Champion also started band programs in the elementary and junior high schools.

Under Champion the students presented the first “Band Frolic,” which included several novelty acts along with the standard concert music. After a few years, this gave way to a more formal performance, which continues to this day in the form of the high schools’ Winter Band Concert. The tradition of marching from the high school to the football games was also established during Champion’s tenure, as was the “AA” formation on the field, which continued until 1969, when the division of the school into Pioneer and Huron high schools forced a change to separate “P” and “H” formations.

Champion, an officer in the naval reserves, was called to active duty in 1941. Once again, the world at war seems to have an impact on the numbers of students involved in band: from a high of 58 under Champion, membership dropped to 37 under new director E. Rollin Silfies.

Charles M. Yates, the director for the next three years, seemed to regain some ground in student numbers and in the performance level of the band, which even participated in the U-M May Festival at Hill Auditorium. For reasons that are unclear, however, Yates left at the end of 1945–1946 school year.

After Yates left, Superintendent Haisley convinced former colleague Clarence Roth to come to Ann Arbor and take over the instrumental music programs. Haisley’s first charge to Roth was to get new uniforms for the band; the old ones from Champion’s time were faded and worn. Roth put together the first “Bands in Review” concert in 1947 as a fundraiser. The uniform salesman convinced Roth that purple dye just didn’t hold up, so the new uniforms were maroon with gold

piping. While later generations of band members would ridicule this choice of colors, Roth and his band wore their spiffy new uniforms with pride.Roth brought back Bands in Review in 1950 and made it a permanent institution, featuring all the district’s middle school and high school bands. The

same year, Roth began taking the high school band to state competitions, where it consistently received first-

division ratings. In the postwar boom, Huron and Main streets became business routes for the new Interstate highway system, so the band now marched to the

Friday night football games down State to Hill and west to Wines Field, with the school victory bell carried up front.

Under Roth the band also began to tour, performing at the International Lions Club Conventions in Chicago, New York City, and Miami in 1953–1956.

In 1948, Clarence Roth established one of the band’s most cherished traditions: he asked Joe Maddy for permission to take Ann Arbor High’s band to Interlochen for a week of “band camp” in late August. This was likely the first high school band camp of its size and scope in the nation. This August will mark the 67th annual band camp for Ann Arbor high school students.

Within a few years after the end of World War II, Ann Arbor school trustees began to plan for a new, larger high school to accommodate the baby boom. The band program moved into its new home at Main and Stadium in April 1956 with the rest of the student body, faculty and staff. It wasn’t long before the band program established the annual Picnic Pops Concert on the front lawn of the new building.

At the new school, the bands saw unprecedented growth and success under another series of excellent directors. When Ann Arbor High was split into Huron and Pioneer in the late ’60s, the band program also divided into two—and both have thrived, winning national recognition by music educators and adjudicators. The Grammy Foundation has designated both Huron and Pioneer as Signature Schools several times in recent years, placing their overall music programs (bands, orches-tras and choruses) among the top few dozen in the country. In 2006 and 2011 the GRAMMY Foundation named Pioneer its National Signature School—the only school to win a GRAMMY twice. In 2008, Skyline High School opened its doors and in a short time has built a reputation of its own for musical achievement and excellence.

The success of all three high schools is a fitting tribute to the band program at old Ann Arbor High, which established the foundations for the long-term success and excellence of music in the Ann Arbor Public Schools.

Huron, Pioneer and Skyline bands commission GRAMMY-winning composer Michael Daugherty. His piece, Vulcan, premieres at Centennial Concert.

“What a joy to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Ann Arbor Public Schools Band programs. In 1907 when the new Ann Arbor High School was built because the previous school had burned down, then Superintendent Herbert M. Slauson determined that there needed to be music education in our schools. In 1925, then Music Supervisor, Joseph Maddy approached the Board of Education to request $1,700 to purchase new instruments. This is the first recorded instance of the Board of Education purchasing instruments for student instruction. This support of excellent music instruction by the Board of Education, administration, teaching staff, parents, students, and the community at large has continued to this present day. We are so proud that our Ann Arbor Public Schools music programs are recognized for their excellence throughout the state and the nation. What a thrill to experience this centennial celebration together and acknowledge our extremely rich history and tradition.”
