MCAT The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is a standardized, multiple-choice examination designed to assess the examinee’s problem-solving, critical-thinking, and writing skills, as well as his or her knowledge of science con-cepts and principles prerequisite to the study of medicine. Almost all U.S. medical schools require applicants to submit MCAT exam scores. Many schools do not accept MCAT exam scores that are more than three years old. Registration is only online at www.aamc.org/students/applying/mcat/

The New Mexico Teacher Assessments are a comprehensive and integrative assess-ment program. Each of the followingtests covers a different facet of the teaching profession in New Mexico:• N.M. Assessment of Teacher Basic Skills• N.M. Assessment of Teacher Competency• N.M. Content Knowledge Assessments

The Praxis Series assessments provide educational tests and other services that a state may use as part of its teacher licensure and certification process.* The Praxis I tests measure basic academic skills, and the Praxis II tests measure general and subject-specific knowledge and teaching skills. An electronic version of the test is not avail-able. For more information, visit http://www.ets.org/praxis/*NOTE: The Praxis tests are not used for certification in New Mexico.

INSITITUIONAL TESTING PROGRAMThe TOEFL Insitituional Testing Program (ITP) exam is the same as the Internet Based Test (IBT), except that the scores are valid only at New Mexico State University. They are not transferable to any other institution. Taking the ITP version of the test is advantageous for those who do not have enough time to take the IBT version and then wait for scores to be forwarded to NMSU. In order to register for the TOEFL ITP, a student must first apply for admission to NMSU. The TOEFL ITP is offered before the fall and spring semesters, as well as before the first five-week summer term.

General Education Development (GED) tests are a group of five subject tests which, when passed,

certify that the taker has high-school-level academic skills. GED testing is offered on a year-round schedule. Students interested in testing must call the DACC Testing Services Office to set up a record initiation appointment.

The Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) is a standardized assessment, delivered

in English, that helps business schools assess the qualifications of applicants for advanced study in business and management. You can help schools find you by creating a profile at mba.com and then opting in to be contacted by schools. This website also offers additional information and study materials.

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) tests are your gateway to graduate programs, business schools, and fellowships. GRE general test scores are used to evaluate your readiness for graduate-level work. If you are majoring in any of the sciences, mathematics, computer science, or English literature, it may be advisable to take a GRE Subject Test, which shows what you know in specific areas and helps you get noticed by universities. Visit ets.org/gre for additional information.The NMSU Center for Academic Success, located in Room 210 of Hardman Hall, has a mock GRE that can be taken on computer, as well as study guides. HOBET (Health Occupations Basic Entrance Test)The test is computerized but not web-based. Scores are avail-able immediately upon completion. Study materials can be inquired with your department. You MAY NOT use a calculator on the test. The test is approximately 3.5 hours.

LSAT The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) is required for admission to all law schools approved by the American Bar Association, most Canadian law schools, and numerous other law schools. Many law schools require that the LSAT be taken by December for admission the following fall. Taking the test a full year ahead, in June or September, is often advised. The Miller Anaologies Test represents an excellent option for candidates applying

to any of the hundreds of graduate programs that accept MAT scores for admission. Contact DACC Testing Services for addi-tional information or to set up an appointment to test.

The ACT is a standardized test for high school achievement and college admissions in the United States. NMSU requires it to be admitted (unless the applicant is over 40 or older). At this time, NMSU does not require the ACT Assessment Plus Writing.ACT—National. Administered at NMSU and local high schools. Visit www.actstudent.org for registration information.ACT—Residual. Same as the ACT National, except that the exam is administered only at DACC, and the scores are only valid at NMSU. Registration for this exam has to be done in person at DACC Testing Services. ACT Residual is offered before the fall, spring, and first summer terms.

CHES Exam The Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) exam is a competency-based test that measures the possession, application, and interpretation of knowledge related to the Seven Areas of Responsibility, a comprehensive set of competencies and subcompetencies defining the role of an entry-level health educator. The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests measure students’ master of college-level, introductory course content in a wide range of disciplines. Register in person at DACC Testing Services. The CLEP fee is divided between DACC and CLEP:• DACC portion is $40 and is required at the time of registra-tion (cash or check payable to NMSU).• CLEP portion is $77 and is to be paid the day of the exam by check or credit card only. No debit cards are accepted.Students meeting the credit-granting score standard will earn the credits and course exemptions listed in the CLEP bro-chure, available at the Student Resource Testing Center Office.

COMPASS The COMPASS is a web-based computer software package developed by ACT. The assessment is used to accurately place students into appropriate Math, Reading, and English courses. Incoming freshman who have not taken the ACT or SAT, and transfer students who did not take English or math at their previous institutions are eligible to take the COMPASS. The assessment is not timed. Average assess-ment time is 1 1/2 to 2 hours. The assessment is not pass/fail. However, it will impact how much time you spend in school. It is important that you study and do well on the assessment. There is a calculator on the computer that you will be able to use during the math portion of the assessment.
