WELCOME to the Center for Discovery, First Presbyterian Day School’s new beyond-the-classroom learning experience. FPD’s campus now transforms into a world of

learning opportunities after the bell rings. From athletics to art, academics to amusements, the campus will be alive with multiple opportunities for students and adults to unleash their talents and stretch their imagination. ABOUT THE PROGRAMS

BEFORE CAMP CARE - 3:15 p.m. - 3:45 p.m.

EXTENDED DAY

The foundational programs for the Center for Discovery are community favorites - the Viking Football League, Viking Soccer League, art classes, elementary cross country and cheerleading. In addition to these, students can now enjoy multiple other opportunities to learn a new hobby, refine skills, or develop abilities. The goal of each class is to encourage determination, imagination, and good sportsmanship.

FPD students who are participating in a Center for Discovery class at 3:45 p.m. are invited to participate in a complimentary snack period in the FPD Media Center before their class begins. This care and snack is provided at no additional charge for FPD parents who have students enrolled in a Center for Discovery class that day. Please note - for classes beginning later than 3:45 p.m., parents will need to pick up their student after school or enroll them in FPD’s Extended Day. Before Camp Care is only provided until 3:45 p.m. and only for students who are enrolled in Center for Discovery classes on the day of care.

As always, FPD’s Extended Day will be fully operational during the 2014-2015 academic year. The Center for Discovery programming is supplemental to the wonderful care provided by FPD’s Extended Day staff, and students can still participate in Extended Day while enrolled in a Center for Discovery class. Lauren Wrabel, FPD’s Extended Day Director, will work with parents to make sure students enrolled in classes are escorted to and from each location.

QUESTIONSFor questions about the Center for Discovery and its programming, please contact Elizabeth Leslein, Center for Discovery Program Coordinator, at [email protected] or call 478.477.6505, ext. 182.

Viking Soccer LeagueFor girls and boys in grades PreK-6

The Viking Soccer League is a recreational intramural soccer league for boys and girls. All games are played on small fields and co-ed teams of 6-8 players each. Teams are formed based on our knowledge of players, as well as rankings provided by parents. Current FPD varsity soccer players coach all VSL teams and serve as referees for most of the games.

The listed game schedule is the only dates that games will be played. There are short practice sessions held before each scheduled game, but no practices on days when games are not played. The number of dates your child plays depends on the numbers formed in each division. Please plan to play on most or all of the outlined dates. The full schedule of games will be available before the first games begin.

Games last approximately one hour. Makeup matches due to cancellations will be on set dates outlined below.

At the conclusion of the regular season the top 2 teams in each division, based on regular season records, will be chosen to play for the league championship. In case of a tie for season records, head to head match-ups and goal differential would help decide which team would advance to the Championship match.

All participants in the league will receive a complete soccer uniform which includes a jersey, shorts, and socks. Players must have shin-guards and cleats are highly recommended. These items are not provided by the league.

Elementary Play: Princess Who?Dates: September 23 & 25, 7:00 PM, September 24, 1:00 PM (performance for elementary school.)When a girl wakes up in the forest, she has no memory of her past. She can’t remember where she’s from or how she got there. She can’t even remember her own name! As she makes her way through the Misty Forest, hoping to somehow find her way home, she meets several fairy-tale characters — Hansel and Gretel, Rumpelstiltskin, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Cinderella and Rapunzel to name a few. Some are helpful and some dangerous, yet all have information that helps our fair maiden recall her own story, eventually revealing her true identity as a princess. Tickets are $5.00 for adults, free for all students and FPD faculty and staff. Advanced tickets can be purchased at the FPD Administration Office.

Competition One-Act Play: Commedia dell’ArteDate: October 23, 7:00 PM.Concept: For the first time, FPD Theatre students will be creating their own play for competition using the commedia dell’arte style. Commedia is an old Italian performance tradition in which actors learned a stock character type and then created plays by performing their character in a variety of situations utilizing standard pieces of comic action. These character types are still familiar today: the doddering old man, clever servant, bragging soldier, clueless professor, etc. FPD Theatre will be bringing this challenging acting technique into our world, using the classic character types to explore current events and modern problems. There is no charge for entry to the one act play.
