2017: Time Flies
~ By Bob Barnes, Senior Neighbors President
Do you ever feel as though !me goes faster the older you become? That
has been my impression and a quick internet search of “!me flies when
you’re ge#ng older” confirms it. Research suggests our percep!ons of !me
passing change over !me. Remember how hard it was to wait for the
holidays or your birthday when you were a kid and now how it is hard to
believe the holidays are already here?
Some believe that because the young have lived less !me, they absorb
more informa!on, slowing their percep!on of !me. Another idea suggests
that when you are young, a year is a much larger percentage of your life
than a%er age 50, so that changes the march of !me in your mind.
Whatever speed !me is marching by for you, the key to making the most
of it is staying ac!ve and engaged, no ma&er what stage of life you are
living. Senior Neighbors is here to help with that!
Did you par!cipate in the Valen!ne’s Day dinner dance in February?
How about Senior Odyssey in the spring (this year scheduled for April 14 at
Grandville Middle School)? Maybe you went to the picnic and spent !me
among the superheroes whose feats of strength and courage inspire us. Of
course, we are already planning the picnic for next year, with a throwback
to the 50’s era (which leads me to wonder if there had been digital clocks
back then, would there have been such a thing as rocking around the
clock…?).
This year the Senior Meals Program (SMP) changed their name to Meals
on Wheels of Western Michigan (MOWWM). A%er a couple of decades of
thinking of them as SMP, it is going to take some !me before I reflexively
think of them as MOWWM, but I’m working on it. Their meals help make
our centers a comfortable second home, where good food and
conversa!on are a daily occurrence.
In May, we celebrated Volunteer Month by honoring our beloved
volunteers who do so much for others, not asking for recogni!on, but
hopefully understanding how much we value and respect them for all they
do to help at Senior Neighbors.
Enjoy what is le% of 2017 and make plans to be ac!ve and engaged at
Senior Neighbors in 2018 as !me flies like it always does. We wi’ll be here
to serve you!

Ways to Wellness
The Competition was Fierce!
Hats off to a Fearless Group of
Older Adults!
Congratulations to each one of
our Walktober walkers! Fifty
people from four Senior Neighbors Senior Centers
accepted the Walktober challenge and got moving. We
were fortunate this year to have gorgeous weather for
the majority of the month and these walkers took
advantage of it. They laced up their shoes and hit the
pavement! What a great way to take charge of their
health and be more physically active! These fifty
people spent hours walking. They all have so much to
be proud of and I’d like to say a hearty
“Congratulations!” to each of them! Well done!
The idea of Walktober is really just to encourage people
to get outside in that nice fall weather and get some
steps in. Sure, we can focus on the health benefits of
walking and each person who participated improved
their health. But, let’s be honest about this. The
competition for the Walktober trophy was fierce!
Tgere is indeed a coveted Walktober trophy. It has
spent it’s life at the Grandville Center. Before you get
all worked up and complain that Grandville has more
people and it’s not fair– just remember that the scores
for each team are averaged so the amount of team
members doesn’t mean a thing here! Two years ago
the Sparta center declared war on the Grandville
Center for Walktober. It was such a close competition.
Grandville won by just a few points for two years. Last
year Sparta worked hard in the ongoing war and
managed to tie with Grandville in the end. The trophy
had both teams listed and each center was granted
joint custody of it! This year, Sparta was again focused
on beating Grandville, and Grandville worked hard to
defend their trophy! Once again this year was so close!
In the end it came down to one point!
And the winner? Congratulations to Grandville Senior
Center’s Walktober team for defending their trophy!
All the teams worked so hard! But this friendly rivalry
between Grandville and Sparta is a great reminder that
friendly competition can be a good thing! It can help to
push us to work harder, do more, and encourage other
team members. Friendly competition acts as a
motivator for us and may give us the extra push we
need.
“The healthiest competition occurs when
average people win by putting above
average effort.”
-Colin Powell
Our Walktober walkers are not Olympic athletes. They
may not be the youngest people at the centers. They
may not be the healthiest people at the centers. Some
of them may have been able to walk an hour straight,
while others may have had to rest after five or ten
minutes of walking. But, they did what they could and
they gave it their all. That deserves our respect. This
is why I call them a fearless group! I love that they put
themselves out there and got involved in something
that may not have been easy, but was good for them!
Congratulations to each of you, and thank you for being
role models for the rest of us!
Now that Walktober is officially over for 2017, be sure
you don’t put those walking shoes in the closet for the
winter! Keep on moving! Lace those shoes up and
take a few laps around the mall or the grocery store.
Many schools open up their doors for the community to
walk the halls–give your local school district a call and
see if this is an option for you.
Be Well!

Fun Facts About December
December is known around the world as a family !me of celebra!on honoring cultures, religions and tradi!ons that have been with humanity for hundreds of years. See below for a mix of the weird and wonderful facts about this magical month!
* An almanac predic!on states that if snow falls on Christmas Day, Easter will be warm, green and sunny.
* The name December comes from the La!n decem for “ten”, as it was the 10
th month in
the Roman Calendar. * The term Yule!de comes from a Norse tradi!on of cu#ng and burning a tree to bring in the Winter Sols!ce. This was to last through 12 days – later known as the 12 days of Christmas.
* December 12th
is Poinse#a Day. * Saint Nickolas, who would eventually be called Santa Claus, was originally the patron saint of children, thieves and pawnbrokers!
* December 28th
is considered by some to be the unluckiest day of the year.
* The first ar!ficial Christmas tree was made in Germany, fashioned out of goose feathers that are dyed green!
* Spiders and spider webs are considered good luck on Christmas.
* Common decora!ons on a Christmas tree each have their specific meanings. Candles – the light of the world, the Star at the top is a reminder of the first Christmas night and Candy canes are to represent the Shepherd’s cane.
* “Jingle bells” was composed in 1857, and not for Christmas. It was meant to be a Thanksgiving song!
* In 1647 Oliver Cromwell, English Puritan leader, banned the fes!vi!es of Christmas for being seen as immoral on such a holy day. Anyone who was seen celebra!ng was arrested! The ban was li%ed in 1660.
* An ancient legend states that forest animals can speak in human language on Christmas Eve!

What a wonderful time of the year as we celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. It is time to connect with family and friends and to share a meal. For many, it may be harder to
celebrate this year because of the economy, the loss of a loved one, or having family out of town. For seniors who may be alone, the Senior Center
offers an opportunity to feel part of and spend time with your other family. We offer a delicious holiday meal, the Center Christmas party and a
New Years Eve party to celebrate the season. It is truly nice to have others to connect with during the busiest time of the year. May all of you have
a wonderful and blessed Holiday Season! Lisa Sarber, CTRS

Coordinator’s Corner
November was a great month together as we celebrated all that we are thankful for. I want to thank you all for your support with our multiple fundraisers over the last couple of months. We did really well at our Keiser’s Restaurant fundraiser and it was a lot of fun! We will probably do it again in the Spring or Summer. Our garage sale did great too and we plan to do that again in the Spring as well. Finally, we had a great time being a part of Christmas through Lowell this year again.
We look forward to celebrating the holidays this month and being together to help make them easier for those who may have a hard time getting through them. I encourage you to come to the center and have some fun making memories together.
Have a blessed December!
Sincerely,
Terra Bieneman
