It has variety. It has challenge. It’s like the superstore for career opportunities. You can be involved in transportation, parks & recreation, facilities, utilities, water, or solid waste to name a few. And there is an underlying connection in the “public” part---where we all take care of our community. We share in the outcome or results of everyone’s efforts: we drive on the roads; we drink the water; and we play in the parks. Your Executive Committee (both past and present) are committed and have done well at staying focused to the mission of serving our members by sharing information, holding educational workshops, networking and social events, and celebrating the profession and people involved in public works. It has been a true honor serving as Chapter President this year, and connecting with so many of you. A common theme I heard from agencies and private firms alike has been, “we’re so busy and have to do more with less. It is just hard sometimes to get away for an APWA meeting.” Let’s continue moving forward with regular general meetings AND take advantage of the best available technologies—webinars, conference calls, blogs, etc. to stay connected and support one another. If you’d like to help start a Virtual Connection Committee or connect with others, get involved. Your experience is valuable and your participation is most welcome!
