This meadow along the trail to Serra Peak at about 3,000 ft elevation on shallow soils above sandstone harbors an impressive population of Brodiaea jolonensis .

Eriogonum butterworthianum is a rare and endangered buckwheat restricted to sandstone crevices in the Serra Peak region of the Santa Lucia Mountains. It is not known in cultivation yet.

Dudleya cymosa occurs abundantly on sandstone outcrops and elsewhere in the Santa Lucias. Dudleyas, as a rule, need excellent drainage and attention to dormancy.  Steep rockwalls make excellent planting situations for Dudleya species.

Abies bracteata, is endemic to the Santa Lucia Mountains where it is commonly seen on steep rocky northeast facing slopes above 3,000 ft.  Although a bit big for most rock gardens, given the appropriate scale and circumstance it can be a great inclusion.

Small and compact forms of the common sword fern Polystichum munitum are common associates in Santa Lucia Fir and Canyon Live Oak forests in the Santa Lucias. They make excellent rock garden specimens along with their close relatives and hybrid associates, P. californicum and P.dudleyi

Chielanthes sp. and Selaginella bigelovii are fantastic rockery plants. Shown here on a sandstone outcrop in the Indians, Santa Lucia Moutains 3,000 ft

Carex sp, shown here in Santa Lucia Creek with Boykenia sp., maintains a death grip on boulders and outcrops in the midst of rushing water. It is a luxuriant sedge and has great promise for wet rockeries and waterfall gardens.

Polypodium californicum, California Polypody, is common on many kinds of outcrops in the coast ranges.  It spreads by rhizomes and is very adaptable to sunny exposures, coastal conditions, dense shade, and montane habitats.  It is a summer dormant fern and very successful in cultivation in rockeries and containers. It is healthy to allow dormancy to run it’s course butCalifornia Polypody will not die when given an inadvertent summer splash in the course of watering other plants in a rock garden. It is an exquisite and long‐lived species!

Mimulus bifidus ssp. fasciculatus, the Santa Lucia Monkey Flower, is superbly adapted to cultivation in rock gardens.  One of the most the most dependable monkey flowers in cultication.  Color forms range from pale yellow to brilliant apricot. It is easily propagated and long lived in the rock garden and certainly has the capacity to dazzle and inspire!  It occurs in the Santa Lucia Mountains and the Pinnacles.

Castilleja applegatei ssp. martinii occurs in Ponderosa pine forest and chaparral in the interior regions of the Central Coast Ranges.  Beautiful but not much known in cultivation.

Delphiniums are seasonally prolific and showy in coast range meadows and grasslands.They can be difficult to identify but are well worth the effort to grow.  Best to grow from seed and minimize transplanting since their roots are easily injured.

View of Cone Peak from the coast at Limekiln.  Cone Peak at 5,155 feet and three and one half  miles from the beach constitutes the steepest rise out of the Pacific anywhere north of Peru and south of Alaska.Impressive stands of Santa Lucia Fir and Sugar Pine occur just below the peak with beautiful mounds of manzanitas, silver buckwheats, penstemons and many other outcrop gems.

Many beautiful and varied forms of Calochortus albus occur in the Santa Lucia Mountains.  In the southern parts of the range around Cone Peak, pink forms abound.  Further south dark ruby red forms abound. Calochortus albus is one of the most successfully cultivated of all Calochortus.  It performs well in containers and in rock gardens. Like all Calochortus, you must let them go dormant during summer.

More pink Calochortus albus. The red forms are much darker. Delphinium nudicaule (pictured right) occurs on cool moist higher slopes in the Santa Lucias.  It makes a marvelous rock garden specimen.

Cheillanthes covelii is an exquisite rock garden species.  Here it is shown growing on limestone at about 4,200 feet on Cone Peak.

Pellaea mucronata on limestone below Cone Peak is another excellent native rockery fern. The related P. andromedaefolia is equally great.  Pellaea’s small oval pinnate segments and grey‐green foliage create an elegant display.

Arctostaphyllos glandulosa ssp. zacaensis  onCone Peak is stunning and gorgeous.  Although it grows so close in miles to the coast, it probably will only tolerate hot interior situations.  Like many manzanitas, the Cone Peak manzanitas can be

difficult to key. A climb up Cone Peak is rewarding anytime of year but best to go April or May to see this manzanita species in flower

Yucca whipplei ssp. precursa above and a scruffy but quaint Carex (with Pellaea)clambering over boulders on the right. The use of Carex,Juncus and grasses that frequent outcrops in nature, can add beauty, texture and a certain sense of authenticity to a rockery landscape if it’s “done right”.  Of course nature does it right almost always. Rock gardens give us  opportunities to create glimpses of nature.

Lupinus albifrons is a big mounding shrub near the coast (ssp. albifrons)and grades into a small to medium sized shrub with a little elevation and interior exposure (ssp. abramsii). At the higher elevations in the Santa Lucia Mts. it becomes a beautiful little ground cover with wonderful bluish flowers looking every bit as choice and compact as our Sierran high elevation lupines. L. albifrons collinusis becoming more available in nurseries but we still have a ways to grow to give folks a better chance.

Dodocatheon clevelandii and many other Dodocatheon species are wonderful rockery plants.  Best grown from seed, transplanted directly in clumps or as individual potted plants into the rock garden and left alone forever allowing growth, flowering and dormancy to take its natural course.
