On August 17, 2017, 545 freshmen and upperclassmen moved into the newly completed Cora Downs Residence Hall in the Central District. Downs Hall embodies KU Student Housing’s mission to build learning-centered communities by continuing to provide academic support and fostering an engaging and inclusive student-life environment.
Connecting Downs Hall and Oliver Hall is South Dining Commons, the new 400+ seat, 22,000 square-foot dining center that offers a wide variety of food choices, including Italian, a Euro Grill, Deli, Tex-Mex, World at Your Table, the K-You Zone, Home Cooking, and Nature’s Finest.

KU Central District Development Project Update Fall 2017
The AAP is a tailored entry path for highly
qualified international undergraduates interested
in earning a KU bachelor’s degree. AAP goals
include enhancing access to KU degree programs
for advanced students ready to begin academic
coursework as they refined their English language
skills, and creating a more structured and
supportive academic and cultural experience
to help international students acclimate to their
new KU home.
Q: How will the addition of Downs Hall in the Central District promote the AAP’s goals?
As we know from the student success literature,
students who live on campus tend to be more
engaged with their institution. The availability of
campus housing to international students is critically
important, and the opportunity to have an American
roommate or roommate from a culture different from
their own where English may become the common
language for communication and friendship is an
important part of the overall KU experience.
