On 07/21/17, the Orlando Police Department responded to an overdose death investigation involving
suspected heroin. Initial officers secured the scene; a homicide detective and crime scene investigator
subsequently responded to conduct the death investigation.
Once inside the residence, the detective began to search for evidence and located drug paraphernalia in
a trash can. The detective removed and packaged the evidence.
Shortly after, he became dizzy and began to “black out” and the left side of his body became
numb. One of the initial responding officers and the crime scene investigator also felt similar affects as
described by the detective. They all received medical treatment and recovered from the exposure.
Lab results later confirmed the employees were exposed to Fentanyl.

Davie County Sheriff’s Office has received information in reference to officer and
first responder fentanyl overdoses. Recently, the postal service has conducted
controlled deliveries of fentanyl in the Davie County area. In one of those cases,
a local officer in Forsyth County, who collected drugs as they were packaged for
delivery, overdosed from airborne particles being blown by her vehicle’s
ventilation system while she was transporting it to the lab for analysis.
In another case, the Northwest High Intensity Drug Task Force seized a large
amount of currency from a suspected drug trafficker. An officer who was in the
room with the money counting machine was exposed to fentanyl and overdosed
from airborne particles generated by the counting machine. This officer was
wearing gloves but was not wearing a particle mask or eye protection.
