Welcome Upper Hutt City and Victoria University to Memorial Park for today’s Central League and Premier League action. Both teams are newly promoted and have made good, solid starts to their season so we’re expecting nothing other than two very tough games.

Last week’s results for both of our teams were fantastic. The 1st team picked up their first points in style with a 7-1 drubbing of Tawa and the 2nd team also had a good away win, defeating a strong Olympic side 4-2. I know neither Fozzie nor Sambo will be getting carried away but two impressive away performances should give both squads some self belief. The good football, discipline and structure needs to continue though so keep knuckling down lads and work hard for each other – there’s still a long way to go.

Last week we announced a fantastic new Community Partnership Agreement that we have recently signed with Vodafone NZ. This is a great coup for our club and the 5 year agreement allows us to focus on some key projects and further develop junior and women’s football. We are extremely grateful to Vodafone for their very generous and wonderful support and I urge all club members to support Vodafone in return when offers and promotions are circulated. Opportunities like this are very rare for grassroots sports and we need to ensure the partnership is successful. I recently changed my own personal communications package to Vodafone and not only was it easy but I saved some dollars as well!

The artificial turf had its first games over the last two weeks and the feedback has been very positive. Not everyone likes ‘tupperware’ (as it’s been branded by some) but the players I spoke to had no issues at all and really enjoyed the surface. It certainly improves the outlook from our balcony and is an impressive facility. Another up-side is that the nets and corner flags are now permanent so certain Life Members can relax after games . . . . ..

I would also like to thank Pete Thomas and the Upper Hutt Club for their support during the 2013 Caltex Railway Avenue Hilton-Petone Tournament. They hosted games on our behalf at Maidstone Park and did it very well. This certainly made our life a little easier throughout the event.

Welcome to you all to Memorial Park and a special welcome to Pedro, Phil, and Rod who are old mates from my Hutt days (some stuff you just can’t forget). This will be our second game on our new pitch and reports from the players were pleasing, but they can’t wait to train on it so they can give it a full evaluation.

This should be an enthralling battle as both teams are coming off very different results last week.

Upper Hutt, arriving here fresh from their first defeat (and I’m sure they will be hurting from this), and us our first win of the season.

It should be no surprise that Upper Hutt have started the season well with the squad that Pedro has assembled. They have some quality players with Central League or higher playing experience. I’m sure Pedro has prepared the team well and they should not be taken lightly.

I was really impressed how our lads played last week at Tawa and as the saying goes “you have to earn the right to play”. This is something we certainly did and got our rewards with some stunning goals.

Olympic, Miramar, and Wests have got the jump on the rest of the pack and deservedly so as they are playing some great football. If we wish to compete with these teams we will need to string some results together.

Congrats to the reserves for their promising start to their campaign but, as with the 1sts, feet on the ground and remember, you are only as good as your last performance. It’s great so many of you are putting your face in front of Chris and me looking for higher honours. Keep it up!

Finally welcome to all the old timers. It’s awesome to see you all here; hope you have a great day and an enjoyable night catching up with friends. We will do our best to top it all off with the right result.

our visitors: upper Hutt CityUpper Hutt City Football Club football arose first from a merger in 1998 of Upper Hutt United (formed in the 1920s), Tararua United (formed in the 1970s), and Upper Valley Wanderers (formed in the 1980s as a women’s football club) to create Upper Hutt City Soccer, and then Upper Hutt City Soccer became Upper Hutt City Football in 2011.

This year has already been busy for the Upper Hutt City Football Club. Not only have we been preparing for our promotion to the Central League but the club has also been busy moving its headquarters from Harcourt to Maidstone Park.

For those who haven’t had an opportunity to see the rejuvenated facilities at Maidstone Park, the turf is finally operational and the club has been busy doing its own version of ‘The Block’ renovating the old ‘pavilion’ in a six week period so we were ready for the new season. The renovation has proven the importance a community places on sports clubs like Upper Hutt (and of course Petone), as many businesses have kindly donated time and materials to ensure the quality of the clubrooms match the quality of the turf outside. Without their support we would have a fantastic playing surface but a bit of a dingy place to gather after the game. While there are still some finishing touches required, the work is largely done and this means players and supporters alike can now turn their attention to the footballing side of the game.

This season’s Central League draw saw Upper Hutt having to play Wests, Wairarapa, Miramar and Olympic in the first four weeks. And we are all immensely proud of what the team has achieved so far. With draws against Wests and Miramar along with a win against Wairarapa, the club couldn’t have asked for a better start. Last week we came up against an Olympic side that are able to play a very fast-paced, skilful style of football and Upper Hutt struggled to keep up. In saying that, if Olympic can maintain that level, we won’t be the only team on the wrong end of a hiding.

What will be important for Upper Hutt is that we put last week’s result behind us and look forward to today’s clash with Petone. Pedro will have Upper Hutt firing on all cylinders today in what is sure to be a great game of football at yet another revamped facility. Congratulations Petone on getting the turf up and running in such a short period of time – it’s a fantastic asset for your club and football as a whole. As for today’s game – come on the orange!!

Ray joined the club in 1976 and played through to 2010 for various teams including the 3rds, 4ths, and the Pet Shop Boys, and then was a founding member of our first Masters’ team, which he also managed for 2 years.

Within weeks of joining the club, Ray joined the Supporters’ Club Committee and became its Secretary in 1980 and 1981. He took over the running of the clubroom raffles in 1980 for a few years and also helped with the New Central Hotel raffles.

Ray was first elected onto the Management Committee for the 1981 and then for several seasons during the 1980s. His major contribution during this period was a complex exercise in introducing computerised systems to the club, especially for what was then a very a high turnover bar with detailed stock control and sales programmes. His innovations also covered our player registration, administrative and financial databases.

In 1988 and 1989, he played a large role in the very time-consuming tasks of researching, writing sections for and producing the Centenary book. Ray had to withdraw from the Committee in November 1990 but this did not stop him contributing to specific functions. Indeed, for a number of years, he took the initiative to compile some very comprehensive rolling spreadsheets showing our annual financial performances and trends over the decade to date at the time.

Ray was again elected to the Committee in 1992 and served until the end of the 1995 season. During this period he was responsible for the drafting of the club’s 3 year business plan and other components of our very weighty application to join the then national summer league – this was a very professional and unsurpassed undertaking by Ray. He also produced important in-depth analysis of employment contracts for the club manager and coach roles; and well-researched and extensive reports on the Privacy Act, the Employment Contracts Act, the Health and Safety Act, the Fringe Benefits Tax, and the Sale of Liquor Act - all of which had become very relevant to management of the club.

Ray undertook so many other tasks in which he always delivered on his responsibilities and, in particular, he also ran various fund-raising quiz evenings for a number of years, collaboratively and on his own. He started coaching a junior team in 1995 and continued in this role until 2001, also

being grade manager for all but one of those years. He jointly coached another junior team with son Jeff in 2003. Ray then coached the 3rd team in 2004 and managed it in 2005. In the late 1970s, Ray also managed a women’s team.

He was involved in managing the under 19 team from 2003, at first jointly, standing aside in 2007, and then as sole manager from 2008 until 2012. He undertook fund raising, team and player management, travel and accommodation arrangements, and also communicated extensively to club members about the programme and achievements of this out of the limelight, but very important, team.

He contributed as a member of the working group which re-wrote the Constitution in 2010. He also played a lead co-ordinating role in assembling the information for the Honours Board and Timeboards in 2010-11 and, in association with that project, he led the work to redecorate the clubrooms. Ray has also scanned all of our Club photos and has produced a CD of all the information on the Boards.

One could sum up that Ray was a player for 33 seasons, a coach/manager of men’s/women’s teams for 3 years, a junior coach for 8 years, a Management Committee for 12 years, a Supporters Club Committee member for 6 years, and under 19 Manager for 9 years. But that simple summary goes no way to portraying the care and commitment with which Ray discharged his roles, nor the diversity of the tasks and functions he undertook within those roles.

Ray has contributed substantively and made a difference to the Club in virtually all of the 36 years in which he has been a member, and for the most part, it has been behind the scenes work.

In recognition of his substantial contribution to the club since joining the Supporters’ Club Committee in 1976, the club awarded him life membership at the 2012 AGM. The humility with which he received the award was consistent with the ‘out of the spotlight’ approach he took to the array of undertakings and achievements that earned him the honour.

When I look at the new pitch there is one thing that gets old Boydy going. It’s the nets. My god they are stunning. Now whoever has put these up has done so in a stunning fashion. They wouldn’t look out of place on any European pitch. They stare at me and say “come back and play football and score goals into me” (gosh that got a bit 50 Shades….). Na seriously hitting the back of those nets would truly be an honour. But hey there is no way in a month of Sundays that I’m returning to play so I will leave it to the likes of your Blairs or your Lanes to hit those nets. And hit them often please lads…Another thing that caught my attention was the area between the changing rooms and pitch. Now obviously it’s a bit messy at the moment with no grass. Myself and a couple of others had the great idea of putting one of the bigger Vege gardens in there. As the players run out they pass bulging tomato plants and proud sweet corn crops. They could even snack on them at half time?The club could then run a Farmers type market thing selling Vegies and that could probably make upwards of 1.4 million a year (based on drunk conversations). We would also win awards for being a healthy club and probably make Seven Sharp where Craig Deadman would talk to Ali Mau about the magic of pumpkins. This all seems very feasible to me.Its Old Timers day at the club and I wish them all a big hello! Last year it went very well and there were some real friendly faces from years gone past. Steve Minogue has got another great day planned so I hope you all enjoy.Grant Plumbing Petone face promoted Upper Hutt today. I had the pleasure of watching the boys rip apart Tawa last week. They would have got a big confidence boost from that and I hope it continues today. I live in Upper Hutt, but hear me now; this monkey king is Petone through and through!Go the Blues!
