Class History

One cold, brisk February morning,four long years ago, the teachers andmembers of East High School, gratefulfor the honor thus conferred uponthem, welcomed to its spacious hallstwo hundred fifty verdant "frosh," whowere to compose the glorious and mem-orable class of January, 1922.

After being duly initiated into thehalls of this famous building, and hav-ing found out where the office was, andwhere the elevator wasn't, the classproceeded to make itself known. How-ever, it was not able to do much thefirst year, because of the "flu" epi-demic.

The second year of our coursebrought forth a semblance of unionbetween the members. The girls organ-ized and held a couple of lively partiesin the gym. The boys went so far as toelect officers, and committees, but atthat point they became either fright-ened or lonesome, for they held nojollifications at all.

In our junior year the North andSouth, weary of "stag" affairs, combinedorganizations, and everyone came for-ward with enthusiasm to make the nameof January '22 illustrious. Our twoparties, the "High Jinx Ball" and the"Hallowe'en Hop" were brilliant and

successful affairs, while the "JuniorJaunt" at Durand-Eastman Park provedas thrilling and unusual as a picnic canbe.

In order not to be selfish, the classheld a candy sale which gave everyonesomething sweet to think about, andadded greatly to the class treasury.

As seniors, much work lay before us.Although candy sales and plays werepredominant and important, we man-aged to squeeze in time for two socials,known respectively as the "Spring Spe-cial" and the "Senior Serenade." Thelatter was the crowning success of ourhigh school career. In June we joinedforces with June '21 and sailed over thedeep blue sea to a metropolis, calledCobourg.

January '22 has tried to add to thestrength of the school activities. It hasbeen exceptionally well represented onthe Clarion, in dramatics and in ath-letics. Under the direction of MissBurns, it has given very successfullyboth a senior farce and play.

Now, as we stand on the threshold ofa long and misty future, we wonder ifthe coming years will hold as muchpleasure and opportunity for us as thosewe have passed in our dear Alma Mater.

The Prophecy

Night falls quickly in the desert andas our caravan journeyed towards theoasis of Bir el-Abd the sun's last pur-pling rays kissed the desert sand. Wewere on our way to El Arish in our firstvisit to the Orient in January of 1935.

Before us stretched miles and miles ofsandy barren. One could not feel alone,however, with the myriad of stars light-ing the deepest of midnight blue skies.

A caravan of some distinction whichhad passed us earlier in the day wasencamped in a palm grove not far fromus. A Bedouin, clad in silk with astriped turban, reclining on a Damascusrug of orange, smoked before a fire.

Our dragoman, Nirza, informed us hewas a savant of mixed blood, Sheik AbaEl Kasam. Furthermore, this nomad ofa wandering tribe was far famed as aprophet.

Our curiosity thus aroused to feverheat, we dispatched the faithful Nirzato intercept him in our behalf. He re-turned with the word that Sheik Aba ElKasam had most graciously consentedto receive us.

Seated around the Bedouin's fire webegged him to tell us what had becomeof our friends in America—the class ofJanuary 1922. Our interpreter, a halfnaked Moslem boy, put our appeal intopicturesque jargon to our unintelligibleears.

The seer must have been of an imag-inative faculty, extraordinary. Aftersmoking placidly he suddenly droppedhis nargitheh, stared wildly around himand worked himself into a frenzy of bodythat cast weird shadows over the creamycolored sand.

Silence again and the desert had re-turned to its ancient solemnity as oldand wide and still as the stars them-selves. This time it was the Moslem boywho interrupted with his interpretation.

It would be too arduous a task torepeat the story word for word in thebroken English in which it was given.Consequently the following is simply thestory of the mind pictures that the Mos-lem boy's words produced.

The first scene that came before myeyes was Greenwich village with all the

unique signs of its trade. Here I foundHelen Reynolds established as a Bohe-mian artist of masques, and not far fromher was Mildred Forster, the secondZona Gale. Dorothy Sykes, the spirit-ualist, was interrupted by Albert Eid-man who dropped in to invite them to aparty in honor of the Russe artiste, RuthLapides.

Albert, it seems, is in charge of asection of the New York Sun devoted toadvice to girls on the delicate subject ofhow - to-hold- your-husband-wi th - house-hold-chemistry. His advice, however, hadproved fatal in the case of VirginiaThompson, the fascinating widow.

The scene changed and I found beforeme Broadway in all its glitter of electriclights. Saloma McGregor and PriscillaGreene were "headliners" in the season'ssuccess, the "Lure of the Sea." AngeloMaggio, the famous contortionist, wasentering with Ethel Stillman, the philan-thropist.

Then, as the interpreter mentioned

know, is the architect of the North High

teaches.

It seemed that the next words of the

Moslem boy were surely a fault of hear-

ing, but no—it was true. Frieda Rose

is married to Robert James, the cigarettemanufacturer, where, sad to relate, theconsumption is greater than the output.Robert's old friend Carleton Rudmanis now the owner of a thriving ranch inupper Nevada. Not long ago, AlbertIsner attempted to sell him someSloane's Linament for his mustangLightning. He left hastily on JanicePaine's jitney airplane for the refresh-ing air of Rochester.

As the seer described East Avenue Iunderstood more fully the truth, "theold must give way to the new." Forhere Katherine Nair had opened a"French Pastry Shoppe." Helen Adler,the snake swallower, and DorothyBriggs, the matron of the OrphanAsylum, sipped tea and nibbled Frenchpastry while they discussed the affairs otHenry Cardew, who was teaching jazz tothe African Cannibals.

Again the scene shifted to the famousDutch Delicatessen where a sign read"food cooled to stirring air of music,"and of course Lawrence Heinrich wasproprietor. Earl Guttenberg hurried into buy beans for his nineteen, hungryyoung scamps. A huge car sped pastwith two frightened personages on theback seat, Julia Bishop, first lady of theland, and Arthur Welsh, the detective.Myra Kuimjian, in a ducky chauffeur's

uniform, was gleefully feeding the gas.They were on their way to see HildaZimmerman's "Home for Stray Cats,"but Arthur went on to keep an appoint-ment with Beatrice Moshier, the heartspecialist. Myra brought the car to asudden stop, nearly running over theChief of Police, Harry Clark, who ex-pressed his opinion in no few words.Harry wasn't feeling very good humored.He had just removed Standish Favourto a new abode, familiar to those whodisturb the public peace. Stan's pal,Edward Steele, had lost little time andhad "freighted" it to Washington. Herehe spent happy days playing put andtake with Bertha Kentner, the novelist.

Atta Bartlett is also in Washington.She has opened a school for "MidsummerNight Madness" where Clinton Hainesteaches dancing. He uses his feet forother feats however, for Philip Gordon,the demonstrator of Armstrong Heatersmade a somewhat hasty exit through thefront door.

Again, as quickly as the figures of thesilver sheet change, Maynard Hallman,ambassador to Japan, and RichardEvans, the explorer, stood before me.Dick is exalted for his work m findingthe'entrance to Hades. At present he

was taking a little recreation from ex-hausting labors in the form of a vaude-ville show. Williard Glerum and Inez deCalesta, the vampire, featured withViolet Bender, in a one act play entitled"The Village Gossip."

After the play, Violet hurried over toBedina Fenig, attorney-at-law, who isconducting a suit for damages againstSpencer Cook, the beauty specialist.The affair is causing quite a bit of com-ment inasmuch as Dr. Peter Altpeter istestifying in Miss Bender's behalf. Likemany other physicians, Dr. Peter was ina great hurry, especially at this time.He was to meet Mr. Earl Hieb, who hasamassed a small fortune from his "pana-cea-for-all-ills."

They were due at the wedding of MissMarion Fleischer and the wedding was abig event. The bride was to wear a coro-net of pearls and rubies, beautifullyexecuted by Marguerite Butts, a crafts-man of silver and jewels. Faith Hewitthas recently returned from France withthe wedding gown, created by herself.

Among the out of town guests wereSamuel Grover, who is so besieged bywomen that he hasn't time for an occu-pation; Ward Hamilton, the famoussmuggler of Bourbon; Mary Wallace,

now a countess, beloved of all Italians;and James Crombie, Jr., who holds thegolf championship of America.

Speaking of sports, of course you re-member Selden Mapes: Irene Prestonhis social secretary, says it's simply im-possible to keep track of his affairs. Herecently lost quite a sum at the racesafter following the tip of Elmer Smith,the jockey. At present he is much inter-ested in Carolyn Bareham's movementto renew the ancient order of KingArthur's Court. Jack Berman is back-ing the enterprise. He has returned toJerusalem with Jerome Cowen, RalphHurwitz, and Benjamin Levine, wherethey are cultivating dates.

Adelaide Seneca is carrying out herromantic qualities as the head of an ex-pedition in quest of a buried treasure inthe South Sea Islands. The inspirationlies in a map which was discovered in thebottom of a dried-up well, which oncebelonged to the estate of an old sea-pirate. The other members of the expe-dition, Harvey Olsan, Arthur Joffe, andPhilip Gordon are confident of its suc-cess. They base their hopes on thewords of Madame Verna Morse whopredicts a long journey for Adelaide anddeclares by the Mount of Venus that shehas great financial ability.

Nathan La Due, the society leader,gave a farewell party at Beatrice Stahl'sTea Kettle Inn. Ella Trox and EvelynZweig, the two pretty waitresses, werequite startled to hear Eva Lipsky's talk-ing parrot ask for a cracker. Amongthose present were fire-chief of theEighteenth ward, Irma Pero; FrancisAllen, the artist, protege of societywomen; James Morton, President of theSchool Board, who has passed a bill pro-viding milk and crackers for all highschool students; and Gladys Hunt, theentomologist.

The next figure was Julius Rapp—which reminds one of the rhyme of Ken-yon Cox about the "Wild Boarder."

His figure is not noticed for grace;You may not much care for his face;But a twenty yard dash,When he hears the word "hash,"He can take at a wonderful pace.

While we are considering the matterof food, it is apropos to mention SeymourBloom, a regular customer at the NairPastry Shoppe and "Bob" Price, the"Hot Dog King."

The procession moved slowly on andArchangela Cupolo, the sculptor, cameinto view. She was on her way to Ro-land Yaeger's Fairport Art Museum.

Her figure of a hurdy gurdy, posed byHerbert Latimer, was to be unveiledthere.

We heard quite often the remark,"this is the season of knickerbockers,and indeed it is proved on all sides thatthis most trim and attractive of streetcostumes has again come into its ownthrough the efforts of Marrocco, thedesigner of feminine habille." Womannow takes her furs out of storage andponders, "Will they l a s t a n o t h e rwinter?" But not if they have seen thenew seal and beaver skins trapped byHoward Foster, who is at present doingbusiness in Alaska, much to the dis-comfort of the fur-bearing animalswhere, in fact, colds are prevalent amongthe bears due to the scarcity of outercovering.

The wee sma' hours of the morningwere nearing. The little Moslem wearywith fatigue, patiently recited the tale ofthe destinies of January '22. Drowsywith visualizing the fates of so many, theremainder, filing past in review, werepictured to my sleep-starved brain.

Leading the parade was Helen Wilcox,

the lithesome dancer at the "Martinel-li." Myrtle Fox was also tripping the

light fantastic. Here are the others as
