THE STORYThanks to the support of 100 businesses from the local community who have joined us for Life Remodeled’s Detroit 100, we are excited to announce the launch of our next project.

We know Detroit is making its comeback, but we also know that efforts need to be made to include Detroit neighborhoods in the city’s resurgence. This project will be the first of its kind in Detroit, and we couldn’t be more proud to see such an overwhelming commitment to supporting Detroit neighborhoods from our local business community.

COMMUNITY INNOVATION CENTERHISTORIC SCHOOL BUILDING REPURPOSING Life Remodeled has leased the Durfee school building (was built in 1927; contains 143,000 square-feet), and will repurpose it into a Community Innovation Center (CIC) focused on entrepreneurship, education and com-munity.

The CIC will operate in collaboration with Central High School and the Detroit Public Schools Community District, to provide hands on education to students. Entrepreneurs will guest lecture in classrooms and students will have the opportunity to learn subjects, like math and finance, with real examples from case studies of business ventures taking place within the center. Community members of all ages will have access to resources and space in order to learn about entrepreneurship and how to start or grow their own businesses. The center will serve as a community center/business incubator with coworking space, makerspace and recreational space for the neighborhood.

ABOUT LIFE REMODELEDLife Remodeled is a Detroit-based nonprofit that invests approximately $5M worth of cash, labor and materials into a different Detroit neighborhood each year. Projects are determined by the community’s needs and vision. Life Remodeled partners assist in three areas: Remodeling a school or other community asset; repairing owner-occupied homes, and mobilizing 10,000 volunteers to clean up 300 city blocks in six days.

SUSTAINABILITYOur approach to neighborhood sustainability consists of five things:

Focusing on the community’s vision, rather than importing a new vision from “outside” the community

Engaging students and community residents in planning and implemen-tation

Increasing the influence of key community and school leaders Modeling a successful system of blight removal, volunteer management

and partnership Recruiting new stakeholders who make long-term commitments to the

school or community assets and neighborhood.

HISTORYIn 2014, Life Remodeled redirected its focus to Detroit neighborhoods with emphasis on a Detroit Public School. At Cody High School, Life Remod-eled and its partners created a new Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) lab, a medical simulation lab, revamped the home econom-ics room, and built a new $1.2 million synthetic turf football field, allowing students to host a football game at home that school year for the first time in seven seasons.

In 2015, Life Remodeled moved east to Osborn, one of Detroit’s most-blighted neighborhoods. Efforts focused on a new roof, gym, cafeteria, library, and main office, among other upgrades to Osborn High School. Prior to the new roof installation, students and faculty regularly had to deal with water leakage every time it rained.

In 2016, Life Remodeled constructed a new $1.4 million park designed by Denby High School students, adjacent to Denby High School.

ABOUT OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKERRon Fournier is publisher and editor of Crain’s Detroit Business and an award-winning and nationally acclaimed political con-tributor to The Atlantic. A Detroit native, he began his family and career in Arkansas, covering then-governor Bill Clinton before moving to Washington in 1993, where he reported on politics and the presidency during the administrations of Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama. Fournier also served as a 2005 fellow at the Harvard Institute of Politics, where he co-wrote the New York Times best-seller “Applebee’s

America.” He now serves on the Harvard IOP Board of Advisors. Before returning to Detroit in the fall of 2016, Fournier published a parenting memoir, “Love That Boy: What Two Presidents, Eight Road Trips, and My Son Taught Me About a Parent’s Expectations.” It debuted No. 10 on Amazon.com, and was a New York Times best seller.

Fournier holds the Society of Professional Journalists’ Sigma Delta Chi Award for coverage of the 2000 presidential election, and he is a four-time winner of the prestigious White House Correspondents’ Association Merriman Smith Memorial Award.

FINANCIALSThanks to the generosity of our many partners and supporters, Life Remod-eled has invested a total of $16,045,574 into Detroit’s Cody, Osborn and Denby neighborhoods. On average, 70-75% of the total cost for Life Remodeled projects consist of in-kind donations, enabling the organization to maximize every cash dollar donated to Life Remodeled. More than 95% of Life Remodeled’s budget goes directly to meeting our mission, with only 4.9% going toward administration costs.

CENTRAL NEIGHBORHOODAs 2017 marks the 50th year anniversary of the 1967 Detroit uprising, Life Remodeled and our partners will invest in the neighborhood surrounding Central High School, the city’s first public high school, in the community where Detroit’s civil unrest began. This year’s project will serve not only as a powerful commemoration of the progress that has been made, but also of the progress we continue to strive toward.
