    Population Density

Population density in certain parts of Helsinki's inner cityarea is very high, reaching 16,494 inhabitants per squarekilometer (165 per hectare) in the district of Kallio, but as awhole Helsinki's population density of 3,050 inhabitants persquare kilometer (31 per hectare) ranks it as quite sparselypopulated in comparison to other European capital cities.

Tall Buildings & Transport Environmental Impact

The clustering of buildings in densely built-up spaces iswidely regarded to be very efficient in transport terms.Studies by Newman & Kenworthy illustrate that cities suchas Hong Kong and Singapore, where the clustering of tallbuildings is the norm, are among the world’s most transport-efficient.

    Total Annual Sunlight Analysis Target

Occupants expecting sunlight should receive a target one quarter of annual probablesunlight hours.Total annual probable sunlight hours (as modelled) = 4500 hours, therefore 25% of probable= 1125 hours.

Reference – BRE 209, Site Layout Planning for Daylight & Sunlight – A Guide to GoodPractice, 2002.

    Sunlight Analysis GeneralRecommendations

    1. Review building position and form toavoid outside areas of relatively lowsunlight.

    2. Plan lower density, lower heightbuildings to South of site, and higherdensity, higher height buildings to Northof site.

    3. Avoid obstructions to South, such asprotruding extensions or features.

    4. Consider shaping of buildings, transparent elements or openings toallow sunlight penetration to shadedoutside areas.

    5. Avoid deep, enclosed outsidecourtyards, and use light coloured, reflective surface finishes.

    6. Provide all occupied rooms with a mainwindow within 90 of South to providesufficient sunlight.

    7. Consider creation of more intimateoutside microclimates with enhancedthermal comfort, sunlight levels, andwind protection.
