The SunEvery friday, Bounce Entertainment comes to take Flagpole to it’s edge

Every Friday at camp, you will find an energetic scene, full of choreographed dancing and upbeat music. Every morning, camp starts the day with Flagpole, a time when buses arrive, campers find their cabins, dance and watch CC Survivor. This year, Fridays are extra energetic with the introduction of Bounce Entertainment who creates a surging pulse of dancing at Flag-pole. Led by Tiffany, an energetic dance/owner of Bounce Entertainment, campers follow her moves. She started off the morning with a quirky song, I’m Elmo and I know It, a parody of a popular Top 40 song by LMFAO. The scene was picking up as more and more campers

started to come and dance, follwoing Tiffany’s sharp dance moves. Then she yelled: “Who is the loudest One Direction fan?” refering to the hit British boy band taking the tween scene by storm. Sure enough, a lot of kids were dancing to their hit song, You Don’t Know You’re Beauti-ful. And then, a key song played, the newest addition to The Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp playlist. The speakers roared as Chasing the Sun played. The song, by British boyband The Wanted was introduced to staff at the Kickoff Event in staff training and taught to campers all week long. The upbeat tempo and stylish dance moves really contribute to it’s hit status

I like it, it’s very colourful. They really love to bounce. I go to a lot of camps and a lot of them are not as enthusiatic”. The Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp spirit seems to be more energetic than ever.

ShemieAt our Vaughan open house we introduced campers a new member of our Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp family, Shemie. Shemie, a name based on the Hebrew word Shemesh, meaning sun is the Jack and Pat Kay`s Centre Camp`s first mascot. He comes to us with a cute, lovable face, big shoes and a huggable exterior. We sit down with Shemie for a Q & A.

Q: What is your favorite activity at campÉ

Shemie: Ahh... I love everything... it`s all so engaging. For a sun like me, I like things to be active. That is why I shine at Flagpole. We just dance! I love dancing! And I love our new favorite camp song, Chasing the Sun. I find I relate to it.

Q: Tell us about your shoes

Shemie: Good noticing! They are in the three camp colours. I love this place.

Q: How`s your first summer here?

Shemie: It`s bright and sunny on both campuses. The campers are so friendly, the staff are inviting and everything is just so fun!

artsKoffler Arts has had a successful first week that lays the foundation for a summer of creativity, learning and fun!

In Koffler Arts, campers engaged with the principles of colour mixing through learning about and making thier very own colour wheels. Next, they created a tonal scale of colours to demonstrate mastery of mix-ing paint. The rest of the month is devoted to learning about techniques and masters of the 20th century.

In Koffler Crafts, the summer theme is upcycling! This week, campers started making bowls using maga-zines! The finished products will be both beautful and purposeful.

In Judaic Art, campers are working to create a camp wide Haggadah. Pulling on themes and artistic styles and throughout history, each camper shall take home a project they can use each and every Seder that re-minds them of their summer!

At the Vaughan Campus we look forward to mak-ing the Hagaddah project next week! This week we looked at iconic movie posters throughout history and designed our very own unique movie posters to bible stories.

Each year, The Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp joins forces with Koffler Centre for the Arts to create a memorable and educational arts program at camp. Koffler, the organization behind the Batsheva Dance Company’s appearance at Luminato this year is a tremendous partner with camp. We are thrilled to be partners in arts creation again this year. arts

YACHADcamp’s newest unit: a toddler and me program

There is about 8-10 campers sitting on the floor, each with their mother. It’s quite still as the kids absorb the Is-raeli tunes sung by sha-liach, Haim. But then, he starts singing a fast song. Everyone gets up, smiles on each kids’ face and they start dancing. Its an upbeat song and these kids seem to be having a blast. The experience these camper’s are hav-ing is a part of our new-est unit, Yachad. Yachad, exclusively located in the new Schwartz/Reis-man Centre is a toddler and me program for kids aged 18 months to 2.5 years old. “[They] be-

come part of the Jewish community at an early age” explained Yachad Program Director Maxa Sawyer. Each week has a different theme. This week’s theme was “Get-ting to Know You”. A typ-ical day features story time, a program of Israe-li music or Sports with Jay, outdoor play, swim-ming. circle time and arts and crafts. Parents have been very pleased. And from the mother’s smiling faces, it looks like they were having lots of fun too.

SurvivorStaff Survivor has been a mainstay of Flagpole for over a decade. Campers watchtheir favorite counselors compete in entertaining (and often messy!) challenges every morning, culminating in an exciting finale on last day of each session. This year, we are eager to announce a fewexciting changes to Survivor.Survivor contestants from Halutzim and Centre Field make up team Aish, while contestants fromBonim, Tsofim, and Centre Stage form team Kerach. And finally, our shlichim and specialists make upour brand new team Ruach. For the first time in Sur-

vivor, campers are banded together as they root fortheir unit’s team. To further the campers’ connection with their teams, two specialties are designatedas Bonus Specialties each day. Cabins displaying ex-ceptional teamwork, participation, and overallperformance at these specialties earn their Survivor team a special advantage in the following morning’sSurvivor challenge. These new additions to Survivor will extend the thrill of morning flagpole to the rest of the cmpday.

! New at Specialties The Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp’s specialty programming has been at the core of so manysuccessful summers in the past, and this year it’s getting even better. Activities range from sports toarchery to arts and crafts and drama, providing campers with a tireless mosa-ic of fun programs.Propelled by the cre-ative thinking of a handful of the great-est young minds this side of the Atlantic, youcan be sure the campers of The Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp will only be looked after by the best. Ledby the dy-namic Blake Enzel and Yoav Cohen-Rim-mer, the specialists of Camp are always in the right place at the right time, with the right attitude (an awesome one!). Right around the corner, specialists will each be organizing a theme day unique to their activity that campers will have the opportunity to take part in. For example, in archery campers will be participating in a Robin Hood themed adventure, while in hock-ey, campers will participate in a tour-nament with trophies on the line to be won. All in all, it looks like the specialty programming is shaping up to be the best it’s ever been.We can’t wait for all the campers to ex-perience the great weeks that are still to come!
