CELT organises two broad categories of courses for groups of participants. Firstly, it designs courses specifically for the needs of each particular group. In this kind of course, participants tend to stay together in the one class, and it is preferable that students are of similar language ability. Participants can also join in cultural exchange activities with other international students at CELT. Secondly the other type of group offered by CELT gives participants with different levels of English competency the opportunity to take part in the Centre’s mainstream courses with other international students.

CELT has extensive experience in the planning and delivery of intensive English language courses. These individually tailored programs are for groups of participants from high schools, university faculties and corporate, as well as government and cultural bodies. The programs vary in duration from four days to 12 weeks and generally fall into one of three types: English + Australian Culture, English for Special Purposes and TESOL Professional Development. CELT has designed and delivered English for Special Purposes courses with a focus on discipline areas such as engineering, medicine and management, amongst others. Customised programs can be offered throughout the academic year and be delivered across all levels of English proficiency.

UWA English language programs focus on the very highest quality teaching and learning with a high degree of action and interaction… it’s very serious fun!

The most common pathway is via CELT’s Academic English and Study Skills Bridging Course, which has direct entry into degree studies at the University. This course is best for students who meet the Bridging Course’s entry standards and who can enrol for 10 or 20 weeks of intensive study. The other route to degree studies at the University is through English for Academic Purposes in combination with an IELTS or TOEFL examination. This pathway is for students who do not qualify for the Bridging Course or for students who only need to study for five, not 20 or even 10 weeks.

The Bridging Course has been designed for international students who wish to study at UWA but do not have the required level of English language proficiency. The program is also suitable for students with unconditional entry into UWA who would like to further develop their language ability and confidence before commencing theirtertiary studies. A ‘B’ pass (65%) in the Bridging Course meets the University’s English Language requirement for most under- and post-graduate courses. However, some courses at UWA have higher entry requirements, for instance:ÌÌ Master of Pharmacy and Masters of Education

require an overall ‘B+’ (70%) ÌÌ The UWA Business School postgraduate degrees

require an overall ‘B+’ (70%) with no skill below ‘B’ (65%)ÌÌ The Graduate Diploma of Education, Master of

Teaching, and all Faculty of Law courses require an overall ‘A’ grade (80%)

The Bridging Course will help students to:ÌÌ Improve their English language skills to the level

required by UWAÌÌ Learn about the organisation and language of various

types of academic texts

English language pathways to UWA undergraduate and postgraduate studiesThe UWA Centre for English Language Teaching offers two ways, or pathways to improve English language proficiency to the level required by the University for entry into its undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs.

ÌÌ Develop their knowledge of the language of their chosen discipline

ÌÌ Develop an understanding of Australian academic cultureÌÌ Develop a high level of analytical and reflective skills in

an Australian academic contextÌÌ Develop strategies to attribute literary

sources appropriatelyÌÌ Develop the capacity to be autonomous learners at an

Australian university with the confidence to participate freely and appropriately in academic situations

students unable to meet the Academic English and study skills Bridging Course entry requirements have the option of improving their English competency by starting with a General English, or English for Academic Purposes course at CELT.

English for Academic Purposes + IELTS/TOEFL examination

An alternative pathway for university entrance is also available through our English for Academic Purposes program, together with preparation for the IELTS or TOEFL examination.

Whilst it is a structured course with an underlying pedagogy, English for Academic Purposes, which is offered in five-week modules, is modified every term to meet the needs of the class group. By accommodating

itself in this way to the knowledge and ability of its students, this course offers a highly supportive way to develop academic skills and English language ability. This focus on student needs incorporates assessment of achievements according to the composition of each class. For this reason, students choosing to study in English for Academic Purposes must also sit for an IELTS or internet-based TOEFL examination.

CELT recommends that to maximise learning opportunities, students enrol in the 25-hour per week option of the English for Academic Purposes course.
