The need

49% of young people questioned say that they have given out personal information, such as their full name, age, email address, phone number, hobbies or name of their school, to someone that they met on the internet.

By contrast, only 5% of parents think their child has given out such information. Source: http://www.children-go-online.net link

The DVD

We cannot give you copies of the DVD or distribute it through the internet. It is a condition set by Jenny and her parents that the material is always shown by trained and experienced adults.

The DVD is eight minutes long, after which there will be short discussions.

In pairs

How could Jenny be made to do things that she wouldn’t normally do?

Why did Claire pass Jodie on to Jenny? Why did Jenny feel pressurised to give out

her address? What other subjects might pupils discuss

online which could give away vital information without realising it?

What do you think made Jenny trust Jodie?

Strategies are important When Jodie asked for Jenny’s address,

Also…

in 2-3 weeks time you will receive an email through your university email account

it will request that you visit a website and explore the e-safety materials

we need you to spend at least 20 minutes exploring them, identifying the relevant and important aspects, considering the ECM agenda, making the connections with your own subject…

then to spend 20 minutes completing a similar evaluation form - being reflective upon the teaching materials, the method of teaching about e-safety and the research process

Finally…

Remember, most children who form online friendships with peers typically report a positive experience, and that there are wonderful, exciting ways of using the Internet positively (including for homework!). For examples of how young people have used the internet to express themselves in positive ways, visit the Childnet Academy website
