MS Society Awards – Well done to our Physiotherapy/gym/shiatsu team who have been shortlisted for the MS Society Professional of the Year Award 2017! The MS Society recognised the team approach and the difference that the therapists make to the mobility of our members. To represent the team, Ros, Margaret, Linda and Melita will go to London in May for an awards dinner. (Melita was on holiday when this photo was taken). Survey– Please look out for the MS Trust survey that will be available soon. This survey enables the MS Trust to work out how our services help members and helps us prove our value to potential funders. There will be paper copies at the Centre OR you can complete it online: http://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/bedsMSTC

Vote for us! We have been awarded some very generous funding by the Masons. The amount of funding, however, depends on YOU. We need you to get all of your friends and family to vote for OUR project. We don’t have full details yet, but we will be contacting you on Social media, email and posters at the Centre. When you get the details, please ask as many people as you can to VOTE FOR US. Your votes could make thousands of pounds worth of difference!

Bowen Therapy - We are very grateful indeed to Wendy Mockford, who has raised funds to pay for the Bowen therapy for the past 2 years, thus introducing a new therapy to the Centre. We are very impressed that Wendy has managed to do this, and she is only stopping as she needs to raise funds for some treatment for herself. We are sure that the members who have benefitted from the therapy will appreciate Wendy’s efforts. Due to the popularity and effectiveness of this therapy, we have decided to keep James on at the Centre for 5 hours per week. However, this does mean that we have incurred increased costs, so please consider your donations.

Your copy of CentrePiece – Please remember to tell Tracy if you would you prefer to receive your copy of the newsletter as a PDF file by email,

.

Benefits Forms – We found that people couldn’t wait for a benefits workshop in order to gain help with filling in benefits forms, and often preferred to speak to one of our MS Nurses We cannot let benefits advice get in the way of nursing appointments, so Miranda or Emma can help you fill in PIP or ESA forms, but this will use additional hours. We ask that you tell the receptionist when booking an appointment that you require a benefits session and that you make a donation of £30.

Apologies - we left Eileen’s name off the list of helpers in Jane’s Bazaar in the last edition. Thank you Eileen for your help!

A big thank you to one of our members Perry Kenningham for supplying our cleaning products, toilet rolls, kitchen towel and some items for the servery such as tea bags and snacks. We are very grateful indeed!

Very well done indeed to Sarah Parry (hydrotherapy assistant) for completing the Silverstone half marathon in March. Sarah has MS and has pain in her feet, so this was a very special achievement.

Thank you to Maria Taverna – Maria says “Every year the Trinacria Association Bedford hold their annual ball to raise money for a charity close to their hearts. This year they are fundraising their evening for Beds & Northants MS Therapy Centre & I have decided to do a sponsored Skydive to help the association raise even more money for such a good cause!” Maria raised over £2,000 sponsorship for her skydive and the ball raised over £9,000. What an amazing contribution to our fundraising efforts!

PHYSIO TRAINING

Margaret and Ros have attended a workshop organised by Dr Wendy Hendrie who is an MS specialist physiotherapist working at the MS Therapy Centre in Norwich. The day offered overview of up to date management of Multiple Sclerosis. The course stressed the value of exercise in MS, even if an individual’s ability is quite limited. Wendy has recently published a paper on the use of the Oswestry standing frame, which enables the user to be kept in a secure standing position whilst exercising the upper body. This would not be possible otherwise, due to the individual’s balance problems. Wendy also appeared on the news campaigning for standing frames to be supplied in people’s homes. An interesting lecture by Dr Steve Allen, an independent consultant in Chronic Pain Management, stressed the impact that both chronic and neuropathic pain have on all aspects of life and that pain is always “what the patient says it is”. The lectures covering Spasticity and Fatigue management were given by senior therapists from UCLH, and offered clear advice on the management of these symptoms. We were reminded that fatigue, in both primary and secondary forms affects over 90% of people with MS. It is unique to each person, and there are effective treatments available. Spasticity is a complex symptom and the whole multidisciplinary team should be involved in developing treatment plans to meet the functional needs of the individual. There was a final lecture by Wendy Hendrie herself, in which we were encouraged to support our patients to help themselves, outside of physio treatments., recommending regular standing practise at home, membership of local gyms and the need to challenge fatigue levels , wherever it is appropriate. Please see our physios for advice on what you can do to maintain your health within your individual abilities.

Panic attacks are intensely frightening events that happen when our systems are overloaded with stress hormones, causing a dry mouth, pounding heart, feeling of shortness of breath, dizziness, shaking, tingling, (hyperventilation) and chest pain. It can feel as if you’re about to die – which of course, increases the anxiety! After a nasty experience with a panic attack, it can be easy to develop a fear of having another one. Starting with the conventional, tell your GP what’s happening. The NICE guidelines for the medical management of panic attacks recommend education and monitoring, Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) or relaxation therapy, and only in extreme cases that do not resolve, an anti-depressant medication, such as sertraline ( which can have the dangerous side effect of causing suicidal thoughts in a minority of people)

If you feel one coming on: Change your focus from scary sensations, to something else that’s tangible – a sound, a feeling, a smell – part of being ‘mindful’ I found that focussing on something else – squeezing my toes and calf muscles, for instance, could distract me. Even searching for a specific item in a supermarket, or counting. Having someone chatting to you, squeezing or massaging hands, for instance, also helps.Regulate your breathing. Slow your breathing and count it in and out, starting with a count of three, and slowing if you can, to a count of five.

Remember: Panic attacks aren’t dangerous. Remind yourself that it’s happening because of anxiety; your body is OK, and the very worst that could happen it that you could become dizzy from breathing too fast , and pass out, after which, your body will regulate itself again, and you’ll go back to normal. If you’re driving, pull over.

Rescue Remedy is a homeopathically diluted ( meaning that it works on an energy level, unlike like herbal or conventional medicine, and is safe to take whatever other tablets you may be on) Bach flower remedy, that many people find effective for times of crisis. See http://www.nelsonsnaturalworld.com/en-gb/uk/our-brands/rescue-remedy/the-rescue-story. There is also a spray, and pastilles; use when you feel at risk of panic attack.

Preventing further panic attacks. Gaining mastery over our states of mind is a lifelong process, and something we will probably never completely perfect. However, there are ways to prevent complete overwhelm from ruling us. Anxiety and panic attacks can be very isolating. Connecting with others and having their support defuses this feeling, so tell other people who care about you, and let them know how they can help you through.

MIRANDA’S BLOG – WWW.MIRANDASMSBLOG.COM 23

In healthcare, we have a tendency to medicalise everything, and by doing this, we sometimes miss the obvious. It’s worth taking some time to think about the practical issues that may be causing feelings of anxiety and panic, and to ask – are there are any practical actions that can be take to make things easier? If something feels overwhelming, is there any help you can get? Can deadlines be extended? Can you get workplace support? Do you have to do things in the same way or can changes be made? Can a charity be approached to help fund an item that would help, but that you can’t afford? I often use www.Turntous.org for this. Getting organised, setting realistic goals, getting help, and taking small steps and deciding on future steps can help to restore a sense of equilibrium

Because the hormones caused by stress are ‘burned up’ by exercise, making exercise, as much as you can, a regular part of your routine, is a powerful assistance in prevention.Unstable blood sugar can also contribute to panic attacks, so coming off sugar and eating whole foods is helps. Coffee can cause anxiety and panic symptoms all by itself in susceptible individuals, so cut caffeinated coffee out completely.

Herbalists often recommend ‘adaptogens’ – herbs with the ability to lower stress hormones or increase resilience to stress. You can learn more at: http://nourishholisticnutrition.com/what-are-adaptogens-and-how-do-they-work/One of the most powerful tools to become more resilient to stress and prevent anxiety and panic attacks that I have found, is something called HeartMath. This is a very simple technique where you breathe in a rhythm of 5 (seconds) in, 5 out, in one continuous flow, whilst focussing on heartfelt positive emotions, in the heart area. To learn this technique and see how your heart rate variability responds on screen, just make an appointment with the nurses for HeartMath!

Likewise, anything that helps to restore a connection to a sense of inner peace; meditation, deep relaxation, helps to prevent overwhelm and retain balance. You don’t need technology to meditate, but there are loads of apps available now for phones, like http://www.headspace.com. These type of things need to be done daily to build resilience to stress, to be effective.

On my full blog online, I’ve also included some fun physical exercises; kinesiology sitting postures, and ‘hand mudras’, from yoga, which also help to calm and ground. All the very best! Miranda.

Make your purchases by clicking through to over 2,000 popular retailers, and raise money for the Centre at no extra cost to yourself. Visit the website and register to support the Beds and Northants MS Therapy Centre to see how much we have raised so far.

Leaving a gift in your will is a special way of ensuring that we’ll be able to continue providing professional therapies and support for people with MS and their families in the future. There are three main ways to leave a gift to The Beds & Northants MS Therapy Centre in your Will:

Residuary Legacy-After making provision for family and friends, you can leave whatever is left in your estate – the residue - to The Beds & Northants MS Therapy Centre or other charities, should you wish.

Cash Legacy-Cash donations are always welcome. However, as cash donations tend to decrease in value over time, you can avoid this by index-linking your gift.

Specific Legacy - Specific items such as property, shares, jewellery or furniture can be gifted. Codicil Form - If you have already made a will, but would like to add a donation to the MS Therapy Centre, you can use a very simple Codicil Form that means that you don’t need to change your original will. Registered charity number 802510, More details are on our website, or ask Paula or Tracy
