MMG Limited’s Century operation is Australia’s largest open-cut zinc mine. Production guidance for 2013 is 480,000– 490,000 tonnes of zinc in zinc concentrate. Century produces zinc and lead concentrates using conventional open-pit mining, grinding and flotation methods at its Lawn Hill site. Processed concentrates are transferred via a 304-kilometre underground slurry pipeline to Century’s port and dewatering facility at Karumba, on the Gulf of Carpentaria. At this facility, concentrates are prepared for shipping before being transferred to Century’s transfer vessel, the MV Wunma. The vessel then transports the concentrate to export ships anchored in a designated area about 45 kilometres offshore. Century concentrates are sold to smelters in Europe, Australia and Asia. Century began operations in 1999. The operation is currently in a transitionary phase as it prepares for the end of open-cut zinc production in approximately 2016 while evaluating a number of options to further utilise MMG’s infrastructure in the Gulf. mmg.com Facts 2012 Production Zinc in zinc concentrate: 514,707 tonnes Lead in lead concentrate: 21,390 tonnes Location Two sites in the north-west Queensland, Australia: the mine at Lawn Hill and associated dewatering and port facilities at Karumba, on the Gulf of Carpentaria. SUSTAINABILITY – COMMUNITY At Century, our approach to sustainability is underpinned by the belief that partnerships, training, employment and business opportunities are the best way to return real, long-term benefits to local communities.

Century is also a signatory to the Gulf Communities Agreement (GCA), a Native Title Agreement between the mine, Traditional Owner groups of Waanyi, Mingginda, Gkuthaarn and Kukatj, and the Queensland Government. The implementation of the GCA is overseen by the Century Liaison Advisory Committee (CLAC), which includes representatives from each party to the Agreement.

TRANSITION – GROWTH STUDIESGiven the strategic location and scale of its infrastructure, MMG is currently investigating a number of options to continue operations following the completion of open-cut zinc production in about 2016. Studies underway include:

» An aggressive drilling program and other work to evaluate smaller zinc-lead-silver targets on the Century mine and exploration leases;

» Further work to understand the viability of a phosphate business; and

» Work to determine the potential for tailings retreatment to produce zinc metal.

MMG expects to have a better understanding of these options in late 2013 to 2014.

TRANSITION – MINE CLOSURE PLANNINGA key focus for Century during this transitionary period is planning and preparing for the end of open-cut zinc production and the closure of the open-cut mine. Century’s aim is to leave a safe, stable environment and ultimately return the site to its pre-mining use – low intensity cattle grazing and native habitat.

In 2012, Century conducted a Social Impact Assessment (SIA) to better understand the mine’s social and economic contribution to the region since mine development. The findings will be used to guide partnerships with community organisations, Traditional Owners, government and others to help create a positive legacy from Century’s open-cut zinc operations.

More information about the mine closure process is available at www.mmg.com
