Overall lesson topic/title: Writing Formal Letters Process using PhotoPeach

Rationale:There is always a need to integrate fun ways to teach writing in the

classroom. Going through the writing process can be a boring and repetitious wayto integrate the steps in a lesson. As usual, the students should actually completeeach step of writing, going through and physically writing out a draft, edit otherwork and create a final draft. But remembering and seeing other students work issometimes complicated. I like the idea of using photopeach because it creates afun and new way to learn and remember the writing process. Having examples tobe shown of each step help them remember what/where the students should be intheir process of writing. I like the idea of using PhotoPeach as a tool for givingdirections and showing a process to completing a task.

    Grade Level Content Expectation(s):

W.PR.04.03 draft focused ideas using a variety of drafting techniquescomposing coherent and mechanically sound paragraphs when writingcompositions.

W.PR.04.04 revise drafts based on constructive and specific oral andwritten responses to writing by identifying sections of the piece to improvesequence and flow of ideas (e.g., arranging paragraphs, connecting mainand supporting ideas, transitions).

W.PR.04.05 proofread and edit writing using appropriate resources (e.g.,dictionary, spell check, grammar check, grammar references, writing

references) and grade-level checklists both individually and in groups

    Michigan Education Technology Standards:

3-5-2.CC.3. use a variety of media and formats to create and edit products(e.g., presentations, newsletters, brochures, web pages) to communicateinformation and ideas to various audiences

3-5.RI.2. use digital tools to find, organize, analyze, synthesize, and evaluateinformation

Objective:Students will be able to visualize and show the steps to writing a formal

letter after discussing the letter writing process and photopeach directions asevidenced by creating a digital storyboard website containing a final letter andimages to follow with their letter.

    Materials & supplies needed:

    23 Computers

Procedures and approximate time allocated for each event

Day One: (about 1 hour) Introduction to the lesson (15-20 minutes)

Today we are going to discuss the lesson we will be working on for thenext couple of days. As fourth graders, we will be writing a formal letter toone of our congressmen to voice a problem we see in our world today. Ascitizens of our state, I would like for you to write a letter, or proposal, to

suggest a change you would like to see around you. Like some laws theyhave created in recent times, no smoking in bars/restaurants, no textingwhile driving, wearing your seatbelts, etc. What is a change you would liketo see? What is something that bothers you? What can be done to changethis?

Along with writing a formal letter you will create a PhotoPeach video, explaining the writing procedure and steps to getting your final drafts. Thevideo should contain the steps: pre-writing, writing, editing, and final copyand photo examples of each step. You will work in groups with otherstudents to finish the video, but will work individually on your letters.

After explaining the outline of the lesson, the facilitator needs to explain

and review the steps in the writing process. What does each entail? Whatshould the students be doing at each step? Give/show examples of eachstep that the students are able to see. Write the student responses on theboard.

    Discussion of Topics (10-20 minutes)

Go through possible letter topics for the students to write about.

Ask students to raise their hand if they have an idea or topic that theyhave in mind to write about.

When they give their suggestions talk about possible pros/cons of theparticular topic, does it go into enough depth? Is there enough to talkabout in a letter? Does the topic make sense?

If the topic does not fit the criteria, and/or lesson idea, alter or change their

topic to reach the requirements without changing the content or main ideaof their topic.

Writing the Rough Draft (15-20 minutes)

After the lesson and explanation of the lesson, have students begin writingtheir rough drafts or outline of their letter. [They should have thiscompleted by the end of the class, or take it home for homework]

    PhotoPeach Tutorial: (20 minutes)

Take students to computer lab and show them a tutorial about PhotoPeach.

Take them through the website, showing different features, tools, etc.

Have a sample video [created by me] to show the students the finalexample of work.

    Day Two: (1 hours- 2 hours)During the Activity:Writing the Letter: (20-30 minutes)

Students should continue to work on their letter during class period.

They should come to class with their rough draft, and be ready for peerediting and peer review.

Give class time [about 25 minutes] to have them work with 1-2 students topeer review their rough drafts.

Creating their PhotoPeach Video: (30-50 minutes)

[Take students down to computer lab if classroom computers are notavailable]

Get the groups together, gather by one computer

    Have them go to www.photopeach.com

Create a log-in name and password for each group to login with, so that allthe videos will be together.

Allow time for students to ask questions about the website, and have them

begin to work. Walk around when the students are working to make sure they are on track,

and assist them with any questions they have.

    After the Lesson: (20 minutes)

Share the videos of a few of the groups.

Allow students to volunteer, if none of the groups volunteer call on a few ofthe groups you believe to have good examples of videos.

CLOSING SUMMARY FOR THE LESSON:Bringing closure (5-10 minutes)

Allow time for students to comment/question/critique the videos that they

view. What do they like/dislike about the video? What do they think about the

    layout? Images? Etc.

    Post-Assessment: (Time N/A)

After the students complete their PhotoPeach video and final letter, I willview each video and review all of the letters. They will receive a groupgrade and individual grade, one for the video and the other for the letter. Iwill also have the groups fill out a peer evaluation of each group member.Did everyone do their fair share of work? Who was the leader? Did any ofthe students not participate in creating the video?

If the students complete the video with the proper images to follow, theywill receive a 4.0. If there are some items that are missing, or mis-use ofinformation, the grade will drop. There is not a image limit, however theyshould have at least 3 images or more.

As for the letters, there will be a focus on spelling, grammar, conventions, etc. They will have high expectations for the writing portion of thisassignment, and should be fairly perfectly written letters.
