FIFTY years ago this month—June 15 is the exact date—the Twentieth Century Limited
made its first historic run between New York and Chicago.
A t first, many people thought it was just a wild experiment, designed to gain notoriety for the Central, and would have a short life.
Instead, the Century has become the best known train in the world, standing as a symbol of the finest railroad service available anywhere. Leader of the NYC's passenger fleet, the Century has carried an average of 100, 000 passengers a year between America's two largest cities during its 50-year history. In that period the Century has traveled over 35, 000, 000 train miles.
Celebrities from all over the world have made it their regular train between New York and Chicago.

If You Want to Live to a Ripe Old Age
Don't Clean With Gasoline Two N Y C men recently used gaso
line for cleaning purposes, in spite of the fact that both of them had heard warnings against the practice many times.
One of them tried to clean the outside of a small motor with a gas-soaked rag. It took only a single unexpected spark to ignite the fumes. Startled, the man spilled more gasoline as he backed away, causing the blaze to spread rapidly. He himself was badly burned before the fire was put out. While he was suffering physically, his family was deprived of his earning power during the time it took him to recover.
The other man used gasoline to
clean some garments. He thought the fumes would rise harmlessly, but gasoline fumes go down. They crept along the floor and were set afire by a furnace. He, too, suffered severe burns.
What happened to these two men might easily happen to any others who don't pay attention to safety rules. The rules are not written simply to fill up space in a book, There's a practical reason, born of experience, behind each one. Ignoring them may sometimes save a man a little time or a little effort, but it's more likely to set off a chain reaction of harm to those he loves as well as himself.
Be smart. Always play it safe all ways. It's cheaper!

The railroads and three of the operating unions—engineers, firemen and conductors—have signed an agreement covering wages and rules. The railroads and the other operating union, the trainmen, had settled on approximately the same basis nearly a
year before. The terms of
t h e agreement provide substantial increases in basic pay, plus a cost-of-living adjustment based on the consumers' price index compiled by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Also part of the agreement is t h e important
provision that no new basic wage or rules demands wi l l be made before October 1, 1953. This assurance of continued harmony is highly important to the national security and to the economic prosperity of the employes, of the country, and of the industry during the months ahead.
Agreement Took Long Time
It took a long time to work out the present agreement. There were many discouraging obstacles. Recommendation of two presidential emergency boards were turned down by the unions. The Army took over the railroads to prevent a threatened strike and held them 21 months. Strikes were called in spite of Army control, and court injunctions had to be issued to end the strikes and prevent further damage national security and the public welfare.
The process of arriving at a settlement, it can be seen, was not smooth. By the disregard shown for the findings of emergency boards and by the repeated resort to strike measures, the long controversy shook public confidence in the Railway Labor Act, which is supposed to safeguard the public's interests as well as those of railroad labor and management.
Big Job Is Ahead
However, regardless of the difficulties which stood in the way of arriving at it, agreement has been reached.
The big job now is to make that agreement work. Our country at this time needs the strongest railroad team— including both labor and management —it has ever had. It needs that team working together smoothly and in harmony. It needs that team working at top efficiency, turning out the greatest possible amount of transportation with the excellent equipment at its disposal.
The public won't easily understand or accept interference with the further build-up of our nation's defenses. There wi l l be little, if any, public sympathy for frictions that impede the preparedness effort or disrupt the national economy.
Like every other member of the American production team, we of the railroads wi l l be expected to concentrate all our energies on the job at hand. It's a big enough, and important enough, job to demand all of them.

A Good Report The Central has to pay a daily
charge to other railroads whose freight cars move over N Y C lines. These payments are made under the per diem plan, by which one railroad compensates another for use of freight cars.
The per diem code, sponsored by the American Railway Association (now the Association of American Railroads), reaches its 50th birthday next month. The system became effective July 1, 1902, after other methods of compensating owning roads had been tried and found wanting and after extensive study by the railroads and many of their associations.
The original rental charge under the present system was 20 cents per day. The charge has risen steadily over the years, and on May 1 of this year reached $2. 00 per day.
The Central, like other roads, is required to pay $2. 00 a day for each foreign line freight car as long as the car remains on Central property.
For the first quarter of this year, N Y C is fortunate in having a per diem credit of $189, 331. In other words, other railroads owe us that much more than we owe them in per diem charges.
This is an encouraging report. To keep it favorable in the face of the increase in per diem charges is a job for every N Y C employe engaged in handling freight cars. He should remember that every car — loaded or empty — delivered to a connecting road before midnight saves the Central $2. 00. It's his job to see that cars keep moving, that A . A . R. car service rules are obeyed, and that N Y C cars are used as much as possible on our own lines so that cars of other roads can be returned to their owners promptly.
The Central starts off the second half-century of the per diem system on the credit side of the ledger. Let's all do our best to keep it that way.
