SHOULDER PAINShoulder pain is a s common a s headache or back pain.

It would be useful to know how to a s se ss the pain and be able to distinguish between a tem porary problem and one that could require a doctor’s visit.

The first feature Is to be sure the pain is coming from the shoulder. If shoulder movement doesn’t cau se pain in ttie shoulder but In the arm or neck, or if the pain radiates from the shoulder down the arm, then the shoulder Is not the likely cause of the pain. It is true that over days, if pain remains, it sp reads to the back, neck and arm s. The reason is that If pain becom es chronic the whole upper linrib, upper back and neck are involved In strain. But Initially shoulder pain should cause discomfort on raising, extending and rotating the arm.

The second feature is how iong the pain lasts. Common sense dictates that a pain that com es on suddenly and goes away Just a s fast Is not worth bothering about. But shoulder pain is rarely that simple. The pain may com e and go quickly but returns with movements such a s reaching for a glass high in a cupboard, or on putting on a coat or sea t be|t. If the pain keeps returning, or If the shoulder pain awakens one from sleep, then a doctor’s evaluation is In order.

Rnally, if shoulder pain Interferes with normal activity or limits usual exercise, then seeking medical advice Is the right move.

If one'W ants to wait and give time a further chance to heal, then the best therapy Is heat, m assage if possible, and lain medication such a s acetaminophen._________________
