Overview of Maintenance Methods and Inspection Techniques: Wood Deterioration Due to Biotic Agents Effects of Fungal Decay of the Properties of Wood Detecting Deterioration / Preventing Decay Typical factors that cause decay in timber bridges and how to detect problem areas in advance. Exterior Detection Methods Visual Inspection Interior Decay Detection Moisture Meter Core Sample analysis versus sounding bores. Advanced Methods of Non-destructive testing techniques andnon-destructive testing equipment e.g. Stress Wave Timing for stress wave propagation measurement.

Advanced Bridge Maintenance Techniques Part A Connectors, end treatments, void treatments, water migration, wood expansion due to moisture content change, decay prevention methods such as diffusion and other procedures for proper timber bridge maintenance

Advanced Bridge Maintenance Techniques Part B Timber types, such as round log stringers and glulam beam crossheads and how treatment and wood species/manufacturing methods affect maintenance procedures. How connector types and connection methods affect maintenance procedures. Refurbishment methods for old timber bridge connector systems.

Non-destructive testing techniques. State-of-the-art inspection techniques and methods. Understanding how timber bridges age and carry loads.
Lunch
Tour local timber bridges to complete an inspection utilizing advanced non-destructive techniques. Discussion about advanced preservation methods such as horizontal versus vertical through bolting and advanced materials such as high strength fibre and diffusers.
