A Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) is a multi-skilled Allied Health professional whose responsibilities may include administrative/office duties in addition to clinical skills consisting of obtaining patient vital signs and histories, performing phlebotomy and lab procedures, assisting physicians with office procedures, and performing ECG’s on patients.

Clinical Medical Assistants must have proficient multi-tasking skills, special communication skills, exceptional organizational skills, and good manual dexterity.

This is a 30+ week program consisting of classes 3 days per week for approximately 500 classroom/lab hours. The clinical component will consist of obtaining a minimum of 160 documented hours in a clinical setting.

After successful completion of the course, students will then be eligible to sit for the National Health-Career Association (NHA) CCMA National Certification Exam.

This program will provide individuals with training in various areas, some of which include: • Medical Terminology• Anatomy & Physiology• Phlebotomy• Medical Scribing / Keyboarding• Minor Office Surgery

TUITIONTotal tuition and fees for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant program, including books and lab supplies, scrubs, clinical externship, liability insurance, NHA study guide, NHA practice exams, and certification exam total $5,000. Students are responsible for the additional cost of their physical examination, background check, drug testing, immunization and/or blood work requirements, and CPR certification.

JOB OUTLOOKAccording to the U.S. Department of Labor, medical assistants can earn up to $33,610 per year, and the field is expected to grow by 29% through 2026. Pennsylvania is the fourth highest employer of medical assistants.

According to the BLS, medical assistants typically:• Record patient history and personal information• Measure vital signs, such as blood pressure• Help physicians with patient examinations• Give patients injections or medications as directed by physicians and as permitted by state law• Schedule patient appointments• Prepare blood samples for laboratory tests• Enter patient information into medical records

Medical assistants take and record patients’ personal information. They must be able to keep that information confidential and discuss it only with other medical personnel who are involved in treating the patient. Electronic health records (EHRs) are changing some medical assistants’ jobs. More and more physicians are adopting EHRs, moving all their patient information from paper to electronic records. Assistants need to learn the EHR software that their office uses.

Medical assistants should not be confused with physician assistants, who examine, diagnose, and treat patients under a physician’s supervision. In larger practices or hospitals, medical assistants may specialize in either administrative or clinical work.

Clinical medical assistants have different duties, depending on the state where they work. They may do basic laboratory tests, dispose of contaminated supplies, and sterilize medical instruments. They may have additional responsibilities, such as instructing patients about medication or special diets, preparing patients for x rays, removing stitches, drawing blood, or changing dressings.
