BACKGROUNDBack pains, muscle aches, spine distress, shoulder tensions and joint stiffness or immobility are all common syndromes associated with Musculoskeletal Disorders. Common as it may be, such soreness ranges from acute to chronic, affecting our daily activities, work performance, emotion and state of mind; compromising our abilities; and at worst, obliterating our self-condence. Recent studies show that four out of ve people suffer from back or neck pain at some point during their lives; Out of every hundred people, seven will experience pain in the shoulder region.
DOCUMENTATION BASED CARE (DBC) In 1990s, some of Finland’s top scientists and specialists, led by Professor Simo Taimela, gathered together to analyze the problems related to musculoskeletal rehabilitation, and subse-quently developed Active Rehabilitation - Documentation Based Care (DBC) protocols. DBC has its headquarters in Helsinki, with regional support centres in Singapore and Dubai, as well as above 80 clinics in over 24 countries. The DBC functional rehabilitation method is developed through the combination of specic assessments, treatments and outcome monitoring protocols. It aims to: • Restore range of motion• Restore muscle coordination and movement control• Improve muscle endurance and strength• Re-educate patients on the difference between normal physical loading and pain• Reduce fears and avoidance behavior• Facilitate and encourage day-to-day activities and optimum work performance
HOW LONG IS THE DBC PROGRAM?
DBC TREATMENT CONCEPT
One course of the DBC program includes 12 sessions. In the rst session, a baseline assessment will be done prior to the start of the program. Subsequently, a personalized treatment plan is developed, which consists of 11 sessions. In the last (12th) session, a nal assessment will be done to evaluate the outcome. Each session takes minimum 60 minutes. To achieve the best results, exercises should be performed twice weekly. This provides the right dose of exercises to give the muscles and other structures (ligaments, tendons) the right amount of stimuli, and allowing sufficient time for adaptations. This also minimizes the risk of increased pain due to over-stimulation.

WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF RECOVERY?
The exercises are performed using DBC devices that are specically designed to address your condition (back, neck,
WHY DBC?DBC provides the most up-to-date, research-based treatment methods, enabling faster recovery and healing of the individual. The results obtained from the DBC program are fundamental and long lasting. Studies show that more than two years after the completion of the program, 80% of individu-als who remained active after the program, were not limited by pain in their daily activities or at work.
HOW CAN DBC EXERCISES IMPROVEMY CONDITION?Muscles are the rst line of defense against trauma and overstraining of the ligaments, joints and other passive structures. Activation and reconditioning of the muscles will improve movement control and co-ordination. Scientic studies show convincing evidence for the effect of exercises in reducing pain and normalizing function. Besides strengthening the muscles, it also addresses critical elements such as endurance, co-ordination and balance control. This is essential for achieving the ultimate goals of freedom from pain and improved function.

shoulder and knee). DBC devices isolate muscles with its unique design, thus enabling patients to work on precise, identied weakened muscles. A stretching program and advise for home exercises are also included. In the clinic, you will be doing the DBC exercises under the supervision of a physiotherapist certied by DBC International. During the course of the program you will learn about the anatomy and function of the spine, and the care/ precautions to be taken to prevent pain from recurring.
The unique quality assurance system of DBC ensures the achievement of real-life effectiveness throughout the whole network of DBC clinics. Treatment results obtained at DBC clinics are reported to DBC International by using special software and are analyzed twice a year. According to the treatment results, DBC constantly achieves 83% in pain reduction while 75% in mobility improvement.
