MATERIAL: Hand Spun wool pile, wool weft, on wool base.
DYES & AGE: All natural dyes, dating back to the early part of the 20th Century.
HISTORY & DESCRIPTION
The Qashqai tribe is the largest and best known of Iran’s nomadic tribes. They are thought to have
migrated from the Caucasus in the 18th Century to their present territories around Shiraz, in the Fars
province, South Iran. Today, the Qashqai people consist of a confederacy of tribes, mainly Turkish in
origin, but with some Arab, Fars and Kurd blood. Their name is thought to have come from the Turkish
word “Qashqa”, which means “home with white blaze” – a sign which was considered lucky.
This precious vanishing treasure was woven by a woman from the Qashqai tribe, depicting Stone Relief at
Persepolis, the capital of the Persian Empire more than 2500 years ago. The weaver is depicting the fight
between King Darius and a lion. There are other symbols from Persepolis as well as tribal motifs
throughout the rug. The actual scene is carved in stone on one of the walls in Persepolis.

This actual piece is now in our permanent collection in our showroom. Make no mistake, this truly is a
treasure, an Antique in mint condition and is truly a collector’s item. Also noticeable is the skill in
craftsmanship of the Qashqai weavers, whose love for colours is evident in their rugs as well as their
clothing. The weave is fine, alternating between the Turkish and Persian knot, a rarity in its own sense.
The Qashqai carpets vary in design. Besides this unusual historical piece, they also consist of birds and
other small animals with the addition of rosettes, stars, crosses and petals.
