What is the course about?Today’s business environment is one which is rapidly changing: Brexit presents significant and unknown challenges for many businesses operating in Ireland; there is increased global uncertainty; and new technology is disrupting traditional ways of doing business. Such changing context require managers to be responsive, agile and capable of developing new approaches and solutions to address key issues in order for their businesses to remain competitive.

The Certificate/Diploma in Management Practice will introduce students to key theories and skills related to the practice of management within their own organisation through the lens of self, team and the organisation. The programme is designed to introduce participants to key management principles, best practices and practical ready-to-apply tools in order to help students build their own managerial skill-set, while delivering immediate improvements to their organisation.

The programme has a core focus on people management and will address issues such as employee relations, conflict resolution and HR planning. It will also introduce students to key areas such as managing finance, marketing, strategy and decision-making.

Who should apply? The programme will be particularly valuable to managers in any sector who have had little or no formal management training and want to strengthen their managerial capabilities through the completion of a formal third level management qualification that is highly practical in its orientation. It is also suitable for people working in non-managerial roles who wish to improve their career development in preparation for future management roles.

How will you benefit? This broad programme will offer students the opportunity to develop greater self-awareness in order to better understand their own strengths and weaknesses. It will allow them to integrate core management principles into their own practice to improve their performance as a manager and to work more effectively with colleagues and staff. In order for participants to instantly apply their learning to their workplace and make improvements in the day-to-day management of their organisation, this skills-based programme is delivered with a highly practical focus in a very participative environment. Through engaging in class discussion, role-play, case study analysis and group tasks, students will gain practical tools to enhance their own performance as managers.

How is it delivered? Classes are delivered in UCC on Tuesday evenings (6.30-9.30pm) from September to May. Students will also attend approximately 8 full day (10am-4pm) Saturday workshops from September to May with circa one workshop scheduled per month. Lectures and workshops will be delivered by a team of academic experts in the field of management, as well as a number of highly experienced practitioners.
