CODE OF ETHICS
Code of EthicsThe following code of ethics is designed to assist certified and non-
certified members of the National Academy of Sports Medicine(NASM) to uphold (both as individuals and as an industry) the highest
levels of professional and ethical conduct. This Code of Ethics reflects the levelof commitment and integrity necessary to ensure that all NASM membersprovide the uncompromised level of service and respect for all colleagues,allied professionals and the general public.
ProfessionalismEach certified or non-certified member must provide optimal professional
service and demonstrate excellent client care in his/her practice. Eachmember shall:
■ Abide fully by the NASM Code of Ethics.
■ Conduct him/herself in a manner that merits the respect of thepublic, other colleagues and NASM.
■ Treat each colleague and/or client with the utmost respect and dignity.
■ Not make false or derogatory assumptions concerning the practicesof colleagues and/or clients.
■ Use appropriate professional communication in all verbal, non-verbaland written transactions.
■ Maintain a level of personal hygiene appropriate for a health andfitness setting.
■ Wear clothing that is clean, modest and professional.
■ Remain in good standing and maintain current certification statusby acquiring all necessary continuing-education requirements(see NASM recertification information).

SafetyIn addition, the certified or non-certified member is entrusted with
providing and maintaining an environment that ensures client safety. Atminimum, this requires that the certified or non-certified member shall:
■ Not diagnose or treat illness or injury (except for basic first aid),unless the certified or non-certified member is legally licensed todo so and is working in that capacity, at that time.
■ Not train clients with a diagnosed health condition, unless thecertified or non-certified member has been specifically trained todo so, is following procedures prescribed and supervised by a validlicensed medical professional, or is legally licensed to do so and isworking in that capacity, at that time.
■ Not begin to train a client prior to receiving and reviewing a currenthealth-history questionnaire signed by the client.
■ Hold a CPR certification at all times.
■ Refer the client to the appropriate medical practitioner when,at minimum, the certified or non-certified member:
— Becomes aware of any change in the client’s health statusor medication.
— Becomes aware of an undiagnosed illness, injury or risk factor.
— Becomes aware of any unusual client pain and/or discomfortduring the course the training session that warrantsprofessional care, after the session has been discontinuedand assessed.
■ Refer the client to other healthcare professionals when nutritionaland supplemental advice is requested, unless the certified ornon-certified member has been specifically trained to do so or,holds a credential to do so and is acting in that capacity, at that time.

Fundamentals ofHuman Movement
ConfidentialityEach certified and non-certified member shall respect the confidentiality of
all client information. In his/her professional role, the certified or non-certifiedmember must:
■ Protect the client’s confidentiality in conversations, advertisementsand any other arena, unless otherwise agreed upon by the client inwriting, or due to medical and/or legal necessity.
■ Protect the interest of clients who are minors by law, or who areunable to give voluntary consent by securing the legal permissionof the appropriate third party or guardian.
■ Store and dispose of client records in secure manner.
Legal and EthicalEach certified or non-certified member must comply with all legal
requirements within the applicable jurisdiction. In his/her professional role, thecertified or non-certified member must:
■ Obey all local, state, providence and/or federal laws.
■ Accept complete responsibility for his/her actions.
■ Maintain accurate and truthful records.
■ Respect and uphold all existing publishing and copyright laws.

Business PracticeEach certified or non-certified member must practice with honesty,
integrity and lawfulness. In his/her professional role, the certified or non-certified member shall:
■ Maintain adequate liability insurance.
■ Maintain adequate and truthful progress notes for each client.
■ Accurately and truthfully inform the public of services offered.
■ Honestly and truthfully represent all professional qualificationsand affiliations.
■ Advertise in a manner that is honest, dignified and representativeof services that can be delivered without the use of provocativeand/or sexual language and/or pictures.
■ Maintain accurate financial, contract, appointment and tax records,including original receipts for a minimum of four years.
■ Comply with all local, state, federal or providence laws regardingsexual harassment.
NASM expects each member to uphold the Code of Ethics in its entirety.Failure to comply with the NASM Code of Ethics may result in disciplinaryactions, including (but not limited to) suspension or termination ofmembership and/or certification. All members are obligated to report toNASM any unethical behavior or violation of the Code of Ethics by othermembers.
