Ce** papers! of ?unleer Winion of $aris??)es?, 1786-92*
By Rev. Chancellor J. B. Leslie, D.Lit., M.R.I.A.
The Vestry Minute Book of Dunleer Parish having come into my possession, I think it a pity that a list of all the householders contained therein for the year 1786 should remain unpublished. It is earlier than the census of 1821 now destroyed, and the only list I know of, extant for the 18th century. Many of the names are
still represented by descendants. There are similar lists for 1788, 1789 and 1792, and I show the variations.
At the beginning of the book is a note that Rev. Thomas Foster, D.D., a former
Rector, had bequeathed a sum of ?50 for the poor of the six united parishes of
Dunleer, Drumcar, Cappoke, Moylary, Monasterboice and Dysart ; and Rev. Richard
Norris has a note saying "
I distributed said ?50 in Wheels to the young and Blankets
to the old." Is there a spinning wheel in the district to-day ?
