3The European committee for the fluid power industry, CETOP, is delighted to present to you a European buyers guide for this industry. Fluid power hydraulics and pneumatics is vital wherever there is a need to transmit force and power for drives, controls and motion functions.
CETOP represents associations from all over Europe with over 1,000 member companies. All the leading manufacturers in the fluid power industry are represented in CETOP through their national associations, together with many small and medium-sized enterprises. All these companies appear in the CETOP Directory together with details of their product ranges. The overall spectrum of products is very large. You will find suppliers of both standard products and special solutions, together of course with a comprehensive range of services.
The CETOP Directory offers you an overview of the entire European fluid power industry which is comprehensive but at the same time concise.
This publication is distributed all over the world, through the international fluid power exhibitions, such as MDA INDIA or PTC ASIA, and of course also at European events such as MDA HANOvEr, TPA ITALIA, WIN, PNEUMATICON, HPS, SCANAUTOMATIC, etc. Furthermore, it is distributed directly to customers by the CETOP member associations.
For me as the President of CETOP, it is an honour to be able to present this publication to you.
Etienne PiotCETOP President
Welcoming address by the President of CETOP
4CETOP is the European Committee for Oilhydraulics and Pneumatics. CETOP represents this industry in Europe. More than 50 years ago, national fluid power associations antic ipated the idea of European unity by founding the European fluid power committee CETOP in Stock-holm on 15th June 1962. They thus created the basis for co-operation and communication at European level based on mutual trust and for the benefit of the industry as a whole.
CETOP is an umbrella organisation to which associations from 17 countries belong. CETOP thus represents over 1,000 companies, mainly manufac-turers but also dealers, with almost 70,000 people and a market value of 13 billion EUrO. This is a very high proportion of the industry as a whole 80 to 90% for most countries.
Through these member associations all renowned com panies in Europe belong to the European committee. Many of these companies are lead-ing fluid power manufacturers and major players in the international markets.
The voice of the European fluid power The purpose of CETOP is to speak for the European fluid power industry. With regard to Northern, Central and Southern Europe, it has been highly successful in its role as an umbrella organisation. virtually all the relevant European national fluid power associ-ations are members of CETOP. In the countries of the exten d ed European Union and in Eastern Europe, on the other hand, CETOP has some considerable potential still to exploit. Some of these countries, such as the

Czech republic, Poland, romania, russia and Slovenia, are already represented in CETOP via their national associ ations while CETOP is in the process of making an initial contact with other countries. These include Bulgaria, Ukraina, Slovakia and Hungary. CETOP also intends to establish progressive contact with other countries. Undoubtedly, there will be certain cases where no fluid power association is in existence, and in these cases CETOP shall enter into discussion with other organ- i sations with a similar character.
CETOP also has good contacts in other regions of the world and works in close co-operation and mutual confidence with the relevant fluid power associations whenever appro-priate. These associations are NFPA in America, JFPA in Japan, CHPSA

in China, TFPA in Taiwan and SAFPA in South Africa. Joint projects are concerned, for example, with the development of a world-wide stat-istical system. A further idea is to open a dialogue with client industries. The European industry committees would be a use-ful medium for this in the first in stance. CETOP envisages joint ventures in, for example, the field of education, since specialist personnel well trained in the field of fluid power are also an important factor for these client industries. Other proposed areas of activity are market observation and statistics.
Who is CETOP?
CETOP President's Council and guests, at the CETOP President's Council meeting in Oslo, Norway, October 2012.
6In the 50 years of its existence, CETOP has scored successes in many areas. The committee was, for example, the first organisation to concern itself with the development of technical guidelines for fluid power. Many of these CETOP recommen-dations formed the basis for sub-sequent ISO standards. CETOP also became involved in the area of edu-cation in such matters as harmon ised pan-European re quirement profiles for particular qualification levels. It has achieved similarly impressive success in the fields of European and interna-tional statistics and market data.
CETOP provides support for its members in many different ways. The committee is working closely together with its member associ-ations and their companies with the industry, for the industry.
To the members CETOP offers for example: CETOP statistics on European fluid power unique in offering reliable data tailored to the interests of the industry, available exclusively to
companies of the CETOP member associ ations.
Supplier and product database to advise customers information on more than 1,000 companies and their products.
Education and training initiative. Position Papers concerning EC Directives industrys response to the Commissions proposals or directives.
Lobby at the EU Commission both in technical and marketing areas, harmonised pan-European proposals are a vital requirement for success.
Platform for the exchange of ex perience and opinions.
And much more.
Some CETOP activities in more detail

aid of its member associations. 17 countries participate in this process. The proportion of companies which are CETOP members is very high, around 80 - 90% in most countries, which means that the CETOP statis-tics deliver very reliable indicators for the European market. This infor-mation is not available from any other source, being offered exclus -ively to CETOP member associ a-tions and their member companies.
A new CETOP monthly survey intro-duced in 2009 allows national trade associations to report a qualitative "snapshot" of business to provide an early indicator of hydraulic and pneumatic market performance by country. Questions covered include: business climate, sales, orders and order backlog - this survey now also has regular respondents from other non-EU countries.
Every quarter-year, CETOP pub-lishes information on current econ-omic developments, based on a trend survey. This includes business data for the current quarter and a forecast for the current year for most of the CETOP countries. This scenario is backed by qualitative statements on trends in client industries and more besides.
Each year, CETOP publishes data on individual product segments. Using standard categories, this data de scribes the estimated national home markets for hydraulic pumps, hydraulic and pneumatic valves, actuators, etc. CETOP deploys its concept of national home markets to pursue its aim of covering the complete fluid power market in each country and not merely the part of the market covered by member companies. For the purposes for these statistics, it does not mat-ter where a product is produced, whet h er in the home market or not. What counts is where it is sold.
What is CETOP doing?
7ISC statisticsThe ISC International Statistics Committee project, concerned with world-wide fluid power statistics, has been conducted at the suggestion of CETOP members. The objective of this project is to provide compar-able information on the relevant fluid power markets for the triad of Europe, the USA and Asia.
CETOP is not only one of the found-ing members but has been leading the project for some time. Once again, CETOP is using its concept of national home markets, i.e. what is important is not where a product is produced but where it is sold. Particularly important factors were not only the definition of the product groups for the statistics but also an agreement as to the scope of activ-ities to be covered. In accordance with this, for example, the statistics do not include goods supplied to the aerospace, trucks and defence sec-tors, among others.
Data for the CETOP area, the USA, Japan, China and Taiwan for fluid power product groups is published annually. Data for a quarterly trend survey and a monthly exchange on tendencies is also collected. This data, too, is not avail able from any other source and is offered exclu-sively to CETOP member associa-tions as well as to the ISC partners. CETOP and ISC thus provide their members with an exclusive statistical programme.
Web site www.cetop.orgCETOP also presents itself, its member associations and their affili -ated companies on the Internet at www.cetop.org. With this web site, CETOP demonstrates its compe t-ence as the representative of the Eu ro pean fluid power industry and offers the latest news on all aspects of this industry which is highly suc-cess ful in international competition.
A major element of the web site is the CETOP Directory the buyers guide, which provides information on over 1,000 fluid power manufacturers and suppliers member companies of the CETOP member associations and

their products. An easy-to-use search function using the parameters of com-panies, products and countries offers a rapid overview of appropri ate compa-nies and their complete prod uct ranges. Links can then be used to access these companies' own web sites.
Company details in the CETOP Directory are also updated via the Internet. Changes in company names, addresses or product ranges can be entered by the relevant CETOP member association directly into the online database. This means that the online version of the Directory always offers an up-to-date overview of fluid power suppliers.

8The web site also includes informa-tion on technical universities and magazines which are concerned with fluid power, together with listings of international trade fairs and exhibi-tions and the addresses of other fluid power associations.
A special area of the web site is de- voted to the CETOP Education Initiative. All the Education re com-mendations relating to this are avail-able as downloads. For example, requirement profiles are available for various basic and further training levels in the fields of mo bile hydrau-lics, industrial hy drau lics and pneuma-tics. The website also contains a list of CETOP certified Education centres.
Exhibitions and trade fairsThe European committee CETOP is a vital presence at the major fluid power exhibitions and trade fairs around the world. For example, CETOP participates either as a direct exhibitor or a sub-exhibitor in associ-ation with a member association in the following events: FLUIDTrANS COMPOMAC (TPA ITALIA) in Milan, IFPE in Las vegas, MDA in Hanover, PTC ASIA in Shanghai, MDA INDIA in Delhi, SCANAUTOMATIC in Gteborg, PNEUMATICON in Kielce, WIN, Istanbul, etc. The aim is to sup-port the marketing of the companies in member associations with the aid of the CETOP Directory.
Furthermore, CETOP awards the title of CETOP sponsored exhibition to major fluid power exhibitions and fairs. This action, in consultation with the relevant national member associ-
ation, emphasizes the importance of the event concerned for the industry. To be awarded this title, events must be recognised interna tional exhibi-tions and fairs which offer a repre-sentative overview of the industry.
Representing technical interestsCETOP is also active in the field of the representation of technical inter-ests, for example in the area of European Directives and the effect of these on the fluid power industry. With its Technical Com mission, CETOP can draw on an excellent network of technical experts who discuss these subjects whenever necessary from the point of view of the fluid power industry. They produce statements on these, or Position Papers as in the case of European Directives.
The Single European Market makes it necessary, among other things, to harmonise national regulations,
directives and standards, with the aim of eliminating restrictions or bar riers to trade. This is achieved through European Directives, which are then enacted as national legisla-tion by each EU member state.
Fluid power components and systems may fall within the scope of a number of European Di rec tives, such as the Machinery Directive, the Directive on Electro magnetic Compatibility, the Pressure vessels Directive and the ATEX Directive. CETOP interprets the Directives and their requirements with regard to their consequences for fluid power components and systems. CETOP Position Papers are published for some of the Directives which affect the fluid power industry.
CETOP Position PapersCETOP has published Position Pa pers on the following EU Directives: EC Machinery Directive (06/42/EC)
EC Pressure equipment Directive (97/23/EC)
The Position Papers are available as download on the CETOP web site: www.cetop.org.

9Competence based education and training is at the forefront of the CETOP agenda and with a well established set of Education Recommendations the key words for the future are networking, sharing good practices and being involved and that relates to every national association who is member of CETOP.
The aims and objectives lay within the plan to develop a network of Centres of vocational Excellence, approved and qualified to manage, administer and deliver to a common recognised standard, CETOP com-petence based qualifications. These centres will cover a range of occu-pational levels relating to the main-tenance and management of mobile hydraulic systems and control, indus-trial hydraulic and control and power pneumatics and control.
CETOP Education mission statement The aim is to provide the forum for National Associations to take up an active role in developing, driving and implementing standards, quality and content of COMPETENCE BASED EDUCATION AND TrAINING in -volving hydraulics, pneumatics and associated controls and thereby pro-vide a recognised qualification struc-ture throughout Europe.

Fluid power hydraulics and pneu-matics transmits force and power for drive, control and motion functions. Unlike electrical power transmission engineering, it uses the physical char-acteristics of a fluid such as oil, syn-thetic fluids, water, and air, to transmit force and power. We come across it in all aspects of our daily lives. Hardly any product is de veloped without the use of fluid power, and barely a ma chine or aircraft moves without it; we are just not aware of it most of the time.
Hydraulics and pneumatics manu-facturers are suppliers for the en tire manufacturing industry. Customer sectors include, for example, the automotive industry, the construction and agricultural machinery industry, conveying technology, manufacturers of food and packaging machines, woodworking and mobile machines and machine tools and printing machines, as well as electrical engi-neering, ship build ing, smel ting plants and rolling mills, through to aviation and space travel, medical technology, environmental technology, the rubber and plastics industry, chemicals, elec-
tronics and semiconductor industry. Innovative developments of fluid power components and systems involving the latest materials and state-of-the-art electronics as well as motion and con-trol systems are giving added impetus to techno logical progress.

Fluid power powerful and preciseThe dynamics of machines and plants is often the result of hydraulic and pneu-matic power transmission and con-trol technology. For linear and rotary movements, even lifting or lower ing movements, acceleration require-ments, transferring power or position-ing and holding in position, hydraulic and pneumatic components are used in almost all areas of industry.
In competition with other forms of power transmission engineering, the

outstanding feature of hydraulics is their particularly high power to size ratio, while pneumatics epitomise speed and compactness. Due to their cost efficiency and easy handling and assembly, they are unbeaten in a large number of applications.
The low power-weight ratio and the high power-to-size ratio mean that hydraulics are predestined for mobile applications, such as in construction machinery, agricultural machinery and communal machines. They also allow the generation of high forces and torques at low speeds and rota tional speeds in stationary applications, such as machine tools and plastics machinery. Braking procedures are easy to perform without causing wear and tear. The braking energy can easily be stored and fed back to the system as and when required. In com-bination with electronic regulation sys-tems, positioning accuracy can be achieved that are the equal of any electrical drive. This enhances the performance of machines, increases customer benefits and allows the con-stant development of new applica tions.
What about pneumatics with air as a working agent? It is now an insepa-r able part of automation. It is syn-onymous with dynamics, speed and productivity in the smallest area, and there fore an integral element of all renowned sectors of the manufac-turing industry.
However, even in the clean room, where top quality and cleanliness in
production are crucial, pneumatics contributes to economic efficiency, be it in medical technology, in the production of chips and printed circuit boards, in the dispensary or in food processing. The range of uses is mul-tifarious, ranging from assembly and handling tasks through feeding and positioning tasks to joining, sorting and test processes. Thanks to elec-tronic control systems, pneumatics have long been able to travel not only to final stops but also to intermedi-ate positions, be it in linear or rotary movements.
Fluid power controls production processesIntelligent control and motion today always involves integration into exist-ing or new networks, be it on the field bus level in mechanical engineering or in all-encompassing networks.
The decentralised intelligence of actuators and sensors is increasing.
Data required by quality assurance, for example, can be called up online. The operating hours counter of the compressed air system or hydraulic assembly can be read on a PC. All such tasks that in themselves are small but taken together have a signifi-cant impact on the productivity of a system can be performed cost-effec-tively by means of networking.
However, intelligent control and mo tion begins in the planning and design stage. Numerous software pro-grammes support users in designing hy drau lic and pneumatic systems, dimensioning cylinders, grabs, va cuum suction equipment, valve terminals. Even complete assembly and handling systems can be dimen-sioned, and simulated in the planning stage to assess functionality. The Plug & Play concept of the PC world is thus being adapted to Plug & Work in automation technology.
Fluid power serving our environmentTechnology, people and the environ-ment are not mu tually ex clusive. On the contrary, innovative tech nologies, investment and the creativity of peo-ple are today shaping our future. A rapidly growing world po pu lation and scant re sour ces are the challenges we must face.
The challenges placed on us increase not only due to the increased press ure of competition, but in crea singly due to the environmental impact and our
12
objective of offering as many people as possible a decent world to live in.Fluid power is used in a number of applications with a view to pre serving the environment: in wind power stations to move the rotor blades into the optimum wind position, in con-ventional power stations for flue gas desulphuration, in waste disposal and in recycling, in water treatment, in sewage treatment and in agricul-ture and forestry. Fluid power reliably controls procedures and processes that will safeguard the future of our environment.
Future-proof automation and drive systemsFluid power is excellently equipped for the future. Thanks to the ease with which it is possible to link its compo-nents with electronic control mecha-nisms, the high power-to-size ratio and the optimisation of component
sizes made possible by technical prog-ress, it will always be a driving force. Increasingly efficient sensors, modern bus systems, ergonomic operating and diagnostic systems combine fluid power with electronics to form future-proof automation and drive sys tems for the requirements of tomorrow.
The boundaries between motion, drive and automation are becoming in creasingly blurred and the integra-tion of communicative components is in creasing productivity. Fluid power is taking account of this and producing new technologies such as the micro-systems technology and mechatronics.Fluid power focuses on the integra-tion of functions and the reduction of ex ternal interfaces and contributes to energy efficiency. Customers are concentrating more and more on their core competence and therefore require ready-made and tested subsys tems
Efficient Fluid Power
Against a background of a world short-age of energy and raw materials and the resulting sharp price increases, the energy and resource efficiency of machines and installations is becom-ing ever more important. Fluid power as a high-performance technol ogy for the creation of drive solutions is play-
Energy and resource efficiency Efficient fluid power ing a very active role in this process of continuous improvement. It has been clear for some time that we need to be economical in our use of energy and material resources. The reasons, too, are long since familiar and are indi-visibly linked to the way in which our energy needs are met today and have been met in the past.
There is also a move towards a new approach to the problem from the financial point of view: In consider-ations of the total cost of ownership over the entire life of a product, energy costs are increasingly at centre stage.
The only currently viable alterna-tive way of reducing energy costs is en ergy saving, or in other words higher energy efficiency.
How can this be achieved most effectively? It is important to achieve further in -creases in degrees of efficiency,
for example by minimising frictional and throttling losses, etc. Flexible application drives and dynamically optimised systems offer consider able potential for savings. With regard to all the various types of machine drives, there is, in addition to energy re covery, a second alternative way of, for ex ample, reducing reactive power losses.
The relationship between the power consumed in pursuit of the actual purpose of a machine (for example, workpiece handling) and the power consumed by the machine itself (e.g. overcoming motor inertia, moving gripper tools, etc.) can be optimised. One welcome side-effect of this opti-misation process is that the resulting slimmed-down system becomes considerably more dynamic many drive-technology applications could not be realised without optimised drives of this kind.
instead of individual components. This saves time and costs in their proc ess chain, but also increases the requirement for high-quality customer re lations management a challenge fluid power is happy to take on board.
