It was a dream come true. Here I was, at the controls of a huge Boeing 747 as it hurtled down the runway at Hong Kong’s Kai Tak airport. A gentle ease back on the control column, and it lifted smoothly into the air - perfect. The British Airways training captain said ‘well done’. I noticed by his side a large shiny red button. ‘What’s that?’ I asked. ‘It’s to stop the aircraft from crashing - I just press it and everything freezes’, he said. Ah, if only life were like that - if only we had a button we could press that would save us from trouble. But life isn’t lived in a flight simulator - we have no such button to protect us. This is it.

Elijah was one of God’s servants who knew all about ‘crashing’. After flying high and seeing God perform miracles on Mount Carmel he co-mes tumbling down to earth like a wounded eagle. Gone is his faith, and his hope and any sense of God’s presence. No red button to press. And yet, within a short time he is up, flying high once again. How? Well the answer to that is the theme of the Bible talks at this year’s CEVMA conference in Switzerland. It’s an appropriate location to take a few ‘flying lessons’ from Elijah!

Our guest speaker, Otto de Bruijne knows only too well what it’s like to crash, and then learn to fly once again. When a routine operation went wrong, Otto’s life was held only by a thread as he went into a coma which lasted 50 days. But, like Elijah, he came through it and learned to fly again. We are delighted to have him share with us some of the ‘flying lessons’ he received from Elijah’s experience, and more importantly the Chief Flying Instructor Himself.

Where Eagles Dare Flying lessons from Elijah

From 12 – 16 September 2012, Zentrum Ländli in Oberägeri, Switzerland will be the site for the 2012 CEVMA Conference and Film Festival. The conference is an invaluable opportunity for Christians in visual media to meet, network, share

ideas, projects and challenges and get spiritually refres-hed.

The (biannual) Film Festival will be held alongside the annual CEVMA conference. The CEVMA Film Festival is dedicated to encourage Christians in visual media to produce positive, po-werful, inspiring and transforming stories in the form of films,

documentaries, animations, clips, etc. It likes to recognize achievement and stimulate excellence in production and content of programmes that are created to reflect Christian values in this world.

This year’s themeThe CEVMA Conference always includes a series of Bible Talks where the speaker attempts to cater to the needs and chal-lenges of media professionals. Each day includes a prayer and worship time too, in order to ‘tank up on grace’ and to receive mutual encouragement. The theme of this year’s Bible Talks is ‘Where Eagles Dare - Flying lessons from Elijah’. The Bible Speaker is Otto de Bruijne from the Netherlands.

Otto de Bruijne (1949), creative communica-tor and theologian, was senior staff member of TEAR Fund Holland and the Evangelical Allian-ce in Africa before he became a TV-programme host of travel programmes and talk shows for EO in The Netherlands. Otto has published many books, speaks at churches and conferen-ces and has his own Cabaret programme. His paintings are frequently shown at various ex-positions.

In 2006 he became seriously ill, but God gran-ted him ‘grace time’ in His service, coping well with a physical handicap. Otto and his wife Re-née have five adult children and twelve grand-children.

Chris deGarmo, Marc Fuentes, Natacha Le FlochA look at using good films to bridge to the message of the Gospel. We will watch and discuss some short films and look at how to ask good questions that move from talking about the film, to it’s meaning and finally to the viewer’s personal life. From there we will talk about bridging to the Gospel at the appropriate time. This will be a workshop where the audience will participate and discuss in small groups.

is much more than Christians who work in media.

It’s about sharing, encouraging, dreaming God’s dreams together, being refreshed, inspired, nourished and equipped.

It’s an opportunity to mentor and be mentored, to learn and to teach, to give and receive. It’s family, home, precious friendships...

Above all, it’s about making the difference – together.
