CFAES COMMUNICATION CONTEST Pickaway County will host a virtual 4-H Communications Contest! Many of you have completed demonstrations for your club. Now is the time to participate in this event which will include Demonstration, Speeches and Marketing categories. We will not hold a Team Skit Category this year. To participate please do the following:

1. Read the contest rules at: https://pickaway.osu.edu/news/virtual-4-h-communications-contest Demonstrations and Speeches have specific time requirements according to your age. Be sure to follow the guidelines.

2. For speeches, demonstrations, and senior marketing entries, video your presentation and email it to [email protected] If you are unable to attach your video to an email, you can upload to youtube and email the link or post to Pickaway 4-H Facebook page (it will not actually show to the public), and we can download it from there.

3. Include in your email your name, age as of January 1, club, and contest category. Videos may be placed on the Pickaway 4-H Facebook page after the contest. If you do not give permission for this, include that information in your email.

4. For Junior and Intermediate Marketing entries, please mail them to OSU Extension, P.O. Box 9, Circleville, OH 43113

5. All entries for all categories are due by May 30.

Rosettes, certificates and cash prizes will be given to the top winners in each category. Good luck! DOG WORK-OUTS While we are not able to have face-to-face dog work-outs at this time, we have posted several videos on our Pickaway 4-H Facebook page to assist you with preparing for Obedience and Showmanship classes. YQCA – 2020 QUALITY ASSURANCE All members with market and lactating animal projects must complete Quality Assurance annually to complete their 4-H project, show or sell at county or state fair. If you have questions or issues with this

training please contact Joy at [email protected] immediately! 4-H PROJECT COMPLETION = JUDGING In order to complete a 4-H project, 4-H project judging is required for every project. Typically, we do this through Skillathon Judging, Clothing Judging, Food & Nutrition Judging, Creative Arts Judging and Special Interest Judging. As we have an early fair these events typically take place prior to or during fair. As in-person 4-H events are not allowed prior to July 6 this year, we will utilize the following project judging schedule: • June 20: Livestock Project Book Judging. During

Fair move-in, all livestock project books must be turned in. Dog project books will be turned in at the beginning of the dog show. All books must be complete as book turn in will replace Skillathon Judging this year. Do not forget your books as no book = no show for that specie.

• July 15: Clothing, Home, Creative Arts Judging • July 16: Companion Animals, Woodworking,

STEM, Natural Resources and other Special Interest Projects Judging

• July 17: Food, Health, Leadership Judging

The July 15-17 judgings will all take place in Heritage Hall. Complete judging schedules are attached along with required health guidelines for those dates. Please review them carefully. 4-H CLOTHING PROJECT MEMBERS For judging, please come dressed in your outfit ready for judging. Construction projects will be judged first with the complete outfit on, and then asked to change out of your outfit so the judge can review your outfit’s construction with you. Be sure to bring something to change into. As there will not be a Style Review, a walkway will be set up in the judging area. Each member will model as part of their individual judging. LIVESTOCK BOOK JUDGING HELP NEEDED While we will not have our traditional Skillathon Judging, we will be collecting Livestock Project books. If you are interested in helping to judge a particular specie area of books, please contact Joy.

CFAES MAKE-UP JUDGING FOR NON-LIVESTOCK PROJECTS We know that a change in judging days for non-livestock projects means that some people will not be available on their judging day. If a member will not be available or if they are uncomfortable attending judging this year, they may submit a 5-8 minute video that the judge will review. All videos must:

• Be 5-8 minutes in length • Show work completed in their project book • Verbally share what they have done and

what they have learned from their project. • Be submitted to [email protected] no later

than July 1.

HELPFUL JUDGING WEBSITES & MATERIALS As you and your 4-H members prepare for judging there are several websites that may be helpful: Beef, Dog, Goat & Sheep Exhibitors: Check out our resource to help you prepare your animal for fair. “So You Are Taking a (livestock) Project” is located on our website at: http://pickaway.osu.edu/program-areas/4-h-youth-development/livestock-information Dog Exhibitors: Members with dog projects should visit either the Ohio 4-H Animal Science website or the Pickaway County Extension website for interview questions, forms and updates on dog projects, state dog poster contest, dog forms and more. Go to http://www.ohio4h.org/statewide-programs/animal-sciences or www.pickaway.osu.edu. OHIO STATE JR. FAIR LIVESTOCK ENTRIES Ohio State Fair Livestock and Dog entries (everything except horses) must be made on-line by June 20. 4-H members must be enrolled in the project at the county level to exhibit in a Junior Fair class at State Fair. As entries are made on-line you do not need to get a signature from us prior to entering, as State Fair verifies all entries with us after the deadline. Entry forms are located on the State Fair website at www.ohiostatefair.com. In addition, if youth wish to show in the Junior Swine show, one parent/guardian must complete Adult PQA training on-line. Contact Lizz Share at [email protected] for access to this system.

CFAES HORSE AND DOG ENTRIES FOR FAIR Horse and dog exhibitors received their registration packets in late-March. These entries were due to the Extension Office by mail on May 1. Contact us immediately if you have not yet mailed your registration. PAS HORSE SHOW PAS shows will not take place this year. Ohio 4-H and Ohio State Fair are working out final details for youth wishing to exhibit their horses at State Fair. That information will be emailed from Pickaway 4-H directly to our members taking horse projects. Please note, first year horse members will not be permitted to exhibit at the Ohio State Fair this year. 4-H LIVESTOCK ENTRIES FOR JR FAIR All Livestock Exhibitors except those showing horses and dogs received instructions on entering their animals for fair through the Livestock/Sale committee’s On-Line Fair Registration Program. Each exhibitor must submit their entries on-line at: https://pickaway.fairmanager.com/ for the following specie areas: beef, sheep, goats, hogs, dairy, poultry, rabbits, and llamas. This includes market and breeding animals and showmanship classes. Entries are due by 7:00 pm on May 15. Each animal must have its own entry unless the animal exhibits as a pen of 2 (some poultry projects). Late entries will be accepted at a fee of $25 per animal. Org Advisors please review your members’ entries starting May 16. Email corrections or concerns to [email protected] by May 30. If you have members in your club who later drop the project or lose an animal, please let the Extension Office know by June 5 so we can be as prepared going into fair as possible. Thank you!

CLUB BOOTHS & CLUB SURVEYS We understand the difficulty of developing your 4-H club booths this year. In speaking with the Senior Fair Board, they have made booths optional for the 2020 fair. In an effort to plan space accordingly, all Organizational advisors were sent a survey asking if their club would have a booth at the fair. Please be sure you complete the survey. Booth set up is 8:00 am to 9:00 pm on Thursday, June 18 through Saturday, June 20. Booth tear-down is Sunday, June 28 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. All booths must be 8 feet wide by 4 feet deep and free-standing/self-supporting. Booths receiving 1-5th place will receive a monetary award! LOOKING AHEAD As we look ahead to fall, 4-H awards, Advisor Banquet and more, we have several items in the planning stages. Right now, there are just too many unknowns to finalize and detail all of them. We will share that if possible, Pickaway 4-H will host a youth awards program to physically award Junior Achievement Awards, project placings and awards, trip, scholarship and county achievement award winners. If this is not possible in September, all of those items will be returned to the clubs in their fall awards packets starting September 28.

PICKAWAY 4-H PROJECT JUDGING GUIDELINES

4-H PROJECT COMPLETION = JUDGING

To complete a 4-H project, 4-H project judging is required for every project. At least one project must be completed each year for your 4-H year to count. 4-H judgings include Skillathon Judging, Clothing Judging, Food & Nutrition Judging, Creative Arts Judging and Special Interest Judging. As we have an early fair these events typically take place prior to or during fair. As in-person 4-H events are not allowed prior to July 6 this year, we will utilize a different project judging schedule.

SKILLATHON JUDGING 4-H members are required to complete Skillathon Judging for each livestock, horse and dog project they wish to show in Jr. Fair at the county or state level. This year record books will be turned in as a replacement to Skillathon Judging. On June 20 during Fair move-in, all livestock project books must be turned in. Dog project books will be turned in at the beginning of the dog show. All books must be complete through June 15. Do not forget your books as no book = no show for that specie. 4-H NON-LIVESTOCK PROJECT JUDGING All other 4-H projects will be judged in a similar manner to previous years but with a date change of July 15, 16, 17. You will be judged according the schedules that follow this page. All judging will take place in Heritage Hall. Each interview will be a very strict 10-minute time slot. Knowing that please prepare for your interview accordingly. You are asked to arrive not more than 15 minutes before your time slot and leave as soon as your judging is complete.

REQUIRED SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

• Every member, parent and judge at non-livestock project judging must wear a mask or bandana.

• Do not shake your judge’s hand • Judging tables and wait chairs will be

greatly spread out • Parents are asked to wait in the bleachers

or remain outside. No other adults or children should enter Heritage Hall

• Members should leave Heritage Hall as soon as their judging is complete.

HOW DO I COMPLETE MY PROJECT IF I ONLY TOOK A LIVESTOCK PROJECT BUT DID NOT PURCHASE AN ANIMAL?

• If you are taking a market or lactating project, in exchange for the learning you would have received raising an animal, you must complete YQCA training.

• Complete as much of your project book as possible, and then turn in your project book at the Extension Office between July 7-17.

4-H NON-LIVESTOCK VIRTUAL JUDGING If a member is unavailable or uncomfortable attending judging this year, they may submit a 5-8 minute video that the judge will review. All videos must:

• Be 5-8 minutes in length • Show work completed in their project book • Verbally share what they have done and

what they have learned from their project. • Be submitted to [email protected] no later

than July 1.

WHAT ABOUT RESULTS & AWARDS?

• Results will be posted on the Pickaway County Extension website by 4:00 pm the following day.

• If possible, we will hold a 4-H youth awards ceremony in September so we can present each member with their award.

• If we are unable to hold an awards ceremony in September, awards will be distributed in club packets in late September.
