BRUSH OUT BULLYING AND EMPOWER YOUTH TO STAND AGAINST PEER-TO-PEER HARASSMENT AND ASSAULT.

Once, bullying was considered a normal part of childhood. Now, it’s recognized as a serious problem that can lead to negative effects on children, including suicide. CFGC has launched “Brush

Out Bullying,” an initiative that builds awareness and supports CFGC programs that address the root causes of bullying and prevents violence and harassment in schools.

You can help support CFGC’s preventative services by becoming a “Brush Out Bullying” champion today!

Donate – Give funding to CFGC, and you will help keep children from bullying others and empower young victims to overcome peer-to-peer harassment and assault.

Volunteer – Enjoy a day of community and compassion by helping students paint a “Brush Out Bullying” mural at a local school.

Contribute – We need paint, brushes, buckets, drop clothes, etc. Your personal or business contribution of these items will help make this mural possible.

3 MENTAL HEALTH TIPS ON CO-OCCURRING SUBSTANCE ABUSE

Co-occurring substance use and mental illness can impact children, as well as adults. In 2011, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health said, “out of an estimated 25.1 million adolescents aged

12 to 17 in the United States, more than one quarter drank alcohol, approximately one fifth used an illicit drug, and almost one eighth smoked cigarettes in the last year.” Other studies have indicated that, among adolescents receiving mental health treatment, as many as 50% had a co-occurring substance abuse disorder.  And, the majority of adolescents with substance abuse disorders have a current (co-occurring) anxiety, mood or disruptive behavior disorder.

It is important to become familiar with how substance abuse and serious mental illness can interact with each other. Please contact your child’s doctor or mental health professional if you suspect that he or she is coping with co-occurring mental health and substance abuse issues.

1. Remember that most youth are exposed to alcohol and drugs at a much younger age than when parents believe is the right time for “the talk.” So talk early, honestly and often.

2. Be aware that 90% of people with a lifetime co-occurring disorder had at least one mental health issue prior to the onset of substance abuse.

3. Early treatment of young children with mental health disorders, such as anxiety or depression, may prevent future engagement with high-risk behaviors, such as substance abuse.

NEW SERVICES OFFERED AT NORTH HILLS WELLNESS CENTER

For almost a decade, CFGC has benefited from “Thunder on the Lot,” a live music, car and motorcycle show that supports children’s charities via the Kids Charities of The Antelope Valley Foundation. This year,

CFGC received $8,000 in donations – the most the event has ever generated for our programs. CFGC had a booth at the event, where staff educated parents about mental health services. Young CFGC clients showed their thanks by designing a picture frame with colorful paper cut outs in the shape of their hands.

THUNDER ON THE LOT RAISES $8,000 FOR CFGC

CFGC is the mental healthcare service provider for the ground-breaking new North Hills Wellness Center, which is located on campus at Monroe High School in North Hills.

This is the very first healthcare center on a high-school campus to have two separate entities providing integrated health and mental health care at the same site. CFGC has worked with Valley Community Healthcare, LAUSD and the Department of Mental Health to offer the community this professional clinic designed to provide excellent care to Monroe high-school students, their families and all residents of North Hills and the surrounding areas. In addition, the Wellness Center’s building was constructed to be fully “green,” and it will continue to make sustainable operation a top priority.

The official ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony for the North Hills Wellness Center was October 30, 2014. The new Wellness Center is a project of LA County Board of Supervisor Zev Yaroslovsky, who led the ceremony. The Wellness Center will begin seeing patients in January 2015.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: MAURY FIELDS

CFGC is proud to announce that Cristal Crandall, program manager for the agency’s Gang Reduction and Youth Development program (GRYD), is an official committee member for the San Fernando

Valley Coalition on Gangs (SFVCG). She serves as Committee Chair for the West Valley, as well as SFV Steering Committee Treasurer. SFVCG is a partnership that aims to reduce violent gang crime in the San Fernando Valley and build safer neighborhoods. Other SFVCG committee members include a county supervisor, law enforcement, school district professionals and other community organization leaders.

Cristal’s expertise is a great match for SFVCG. At CFGC, she leads the GRYD program at Sutter Middle School in Canoga Park, which provides on-going support and access to services for youth at risk of gang involvement, as well as their parents. As a SFVCG committee member, Cristal is working with vulnerable children tempted by gang activity, while serving as an excellent representative of CFGC among important community partners.

CFGC’S CRISTAL CRANDALL -- A LEADER IN GANG PREVENTION

Maury Fields’ late wife Nina introduced him to CFGC. Nina was the niece of Arthur Marshall, one of the original San Fernando Valley community volunteers who were responsible for the

creation of CFGC. She was also a psychiatric social worker by profession. Nina passed away in 1996, and Maury’s history with the organization and commitment to the work the agency does has led him to continue to make valuable contributions to CFGC throughout the years.

As a retired pediatrician, Maury knows that children who are healthy -- both mentally and physically -- grow up to create healthy families and heathy communities.

“I’m proud to have supported CFGC over the decades,” Maury said. “This agency is full of dedicated professionals who really care about children. It’s a special place where children and families can heal and grow.”

CFGC is very grateful for Maury’s continued support and dedication to the lives that are positively impacted by CFGC services.
