CFGC programs serving children and families in the Antelope Valley have expanded greatly since they started 30 years ago in 1985. In fact, today we strengthen more than 1,000 families in

the region each year. Our new office, with more space and accessibility to support even more people was opened in the fall. The new site, located at 40005 10th St. West in Palmdale, welcomed the community with an Open House Celebration and Ribbon Cutting on October 22nd. Special guests included Jim Ledford, Mayor of Palmdale, and JoEllen Perkins, DMH District Chief – SPA 1.

The stigma surrounding asking for help with mental health challenges has been reduced in recent years. That is great news, because it means that more people than ever are willing to reach out and seek treatment when they need it most. This new larger space ensures that we can continue to meet the expanding needs of the Antelope Valley community.

CFGC invites the community to learn more about services offered from our new Palmdale office. For more information, please call (661)265-8627 or visit childguidance.org.

TIPS FOR CAREGIVERS OF CHILDREN WITH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES

Caring for a child with mental health issues can be stressful and exhausting. Parents and caregivers often forget

that taking care of themselves is one of the most important parts of being there for someone else. It helps them to stay healthy, feel better and increases the energy they have to continue giving care. Here are some self-care tips for parents and other caregivers of children with mental health challenges.

1. Caring for special-need children requires reasonable expectations, not just of your child, but of yourself, too.

2. Support groups offered by NAMI and CHADD offer resources and a community of people facing the same circumstances. Most of all, they remind caregivers that they are not alone!

3. Set a goal to do at least one thing for yourself each week, like seeing a movie, taking a yoga class or meeting with friends.

4. If you experience excessive stress symptoms, please remember to ask for help for yourself. Call CFGC at (818) 739-5250 or (661) 265-8627.

5. Remember that what you are doing counts! The care you provide to your special-needs child is life changing and means everything to him or her.

CFGC HELPS UNEMPLOYED ADULTS GET BACK TO WORK

CFGC is a leader in providing children’s mental health services. But, most people don’t realize that we also offer an innovative program to help unemployed adults with mental health challenges

get back to work. We work with the Department of Public and Social Services to provide mental health and support services to adults who are receiving assistance from the State’s CalWORKs program. In August 2012, a new Supported Employment component, NetWORK, was added to CFGC’s CalWORKs services. All adults in our CalWORKs program receive up to 15 months of therapy, and their employment needs are assessed and addressed. People with more severe mental health symptoms receive additional help though our NetWORK program. There, an Employment Specialist identifies the types of support each participant needs to become a successful employee. Our Employment Specialists seek job opportunities that are well-suited to participants’ interests and that offer competitive pay and advancement opportunities. CalWORKs/Supported Employment helps people find their way out of long-term unemployment and lifts families out of poverty for generations.

TEENS FIND WORK WITH CFGC AND JEWISH VOCATIONAL SERVICES

Landing that first part-time job used to be considered a rite of passage for American teenagers. But today, young people have higher unemployment rates than ever. CFGC and Jewish Vocational

Services have teamed up to help young people find employment through a program that provides job readiness training followed by placement in a paid employment internship. Open to most our clients age 16 or older, this program teaches young people job-related skills, including resume composition, interviewing techniques and job retention principles. The teen workers gain self-confidence by succeeding in an employment setting while also earning money. Some employers who have hired our teens include Marshalls, Crossfit Dark Horse, and the State of California Employment Development Department.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: DEDICATED CFGC SUPPORTERS HONORED

CFGC will present its third annual “Champions for Children” event on Thursday, May 14th at 6pm. This event

will recognize some of the dedicated people who make a difference in our community. Honorees include:

Mary and Jim Galbraith Mary Galbraith began volunteering at CFGC in 1977, when she first moved to the San

Fernando Valley. Later, Mary served as President of the Board of Directors from 1989-1990, Chairperson from 1990-1992 and joined the Emeritus Board in 1999. Mary’s husband, Jim, has also been a vital friend to CFGC. As a member of the Board of the Hilton Foundation, he provided support in obtaining the seed money to develop our Community Family Center (CFC) at the Park Parthenia Apartments in Northridge. Throughout the years, their contributions to CFGC have helped us to serve children and families when they need us most.

Rick PearsonFor 15 years, CFGC has relied upon real estate professional Rick Pearson, principal at Cresa in Woodland Hills, for all its space leasing needs. With Rick’s expertise, CFGC was able to consolidate into its two newest facilities in Northridge and Palmdale. Rick also helped CFGC save on many costs associated with opening a new facility, allowing more funds to go to services. Rick’s commitment to CFGC has gone far beyond saving the organization money. He has also donated 10 percent of his earnings from CFGC property leases back to our programs and services. For over a decade and a half, Rick’s contributions have changed lives.

Kris PitcherKris Pitcher, LAPD’s Commander of Operations for the Valley Bureau, is instrumental in the partnership between CFGC’s Community Family Center at Park Parthenia Apartments and the Devonshire Division

Police Activities League Supporters (PALS) program. Committed to getting children “off on the right foot,” Kris has made it a priority to dedicate police resources to Park Parthenia, as well as to the PALS location across the street. PALS serves more than 1,000 children, most from Park Parthenia. Kris is a shining example of how law enforcement leadership can help children thrive in our communities.
