The key to ones life may
be a simple smile or hug,
but for me its a batch of
tasteless desire. The ideas behind
the mask is just this, a tasteless
world for all those who wish to
venture into it.
When I wasa small girl I was
subjected to an old
story about the evil
that went along
with the mask,
funny enough it
was from a movie I
watched as a child
with my grandmoth-
er. That fear that sent
a chill down my back
and the wanting of that
mask is what made the
mask such a big part of my
life. I wanted to help express
this to all those around me.
When I looked at the
masks alone on the sheets I knew
that others would most likely
never make connections to the
feelings that I was having about
each and every one. I knew from
many past acquaintances that the
best way to express oneself is to
show them the deepest feelings
through a group of words. So, I
decided that my group of wordswould be my very own poetry.
And from this came my title,
Bedizen Textsketch.
Bedizen Textsketch
stuck with me from the
moment I created it.
Bedizen basically means
tasteless and when I think
of something written or
drawn I either like it or I
dont. And I believe that
everything needs to have a
specic taste for someone to
like it. So, when I was looking
upon my illustrations I realized
I was placing the two differ-
ent ideas of poetry and drawing
in one picture. I then decided
that this work would be seen as
tasteless
yet taste-
ful to many
people, so
I decided
on the term
bedizen.
The
textsketch part
came basically fromthe idea that I was writing text
within an application by sketch-ing it. When one writes text they
are simply writing or typing it,
but when one uses an application
like illustrator they will need to
draw or sketch the text within the
illustration, hence textsketch.
When I rst began
these illustrations I kept thinking
about how I was going to draw
the object. I started to sketch the
objects with fluid lines and lled
them in with lights and shadows
by adding more and more lines.
I used lighter colors to represent
the lighted parts and the darker
colors to show the shadows.
When I rst began the
sketches of the masks I placed
three masks upon each picture. I
then realized that I had created a
lot more masks than I needed to
create. So, I ended up pick-
ing my six favorite and
placed a single mask in
the center of each illustra-
tion.
This worked from the
very rst mask that I created.
I then began to play with the
different line types and thickness
until I found the one that poppedout to me as if it was saying yep,
you nd me and Im perfect for
your mood.
After looking at the
masks that I crated I realizedthat I needed something else,
something to express myself, so
I began to write with the pen tool
around the masks on the paper. So
I recreated all of my text, my own
poems; I then increased the lines
thickness until I found the perfect
amount to pull the illus-
tration together.
When
I looked at
the masks
I began to
think of
the type
of story
each
mask
would have. This led to me
thinking of some of my past
poetry that I had created so I de-
cided to do some shing. I decid-
ed that the poetry should surround
the mask, but not go through or
behind the mask itself. This made
the page look like a jumbled mess
and I needed something to x it
and fast.I decided that the best
way to x the jumbled messwas to include something on the
outside of the illustration to make
it look like it wasnt just thrown
together. I used the octagon
symbols rst to make the picture
look as if it was being held down
as if it was in a scrapbook. I then
used lines to place a box around
the text. This made it look like a
simple picture that was being held
down. It worked perfectly.
Now the only
thing that I have left
to do is wait and
see if everyone
else feels the
same once
they look into
the eyes of
the masks.

I guess the rst thinganyone wouldever say about myartwork is that I place my
feelings within everypiece. This was
the rst time
that I have
ever used
the Illustra-
tor programfor art and I
really enjoyed
it. I am known
for doing small
little details in most of my
work, so the program was
an extreme joy. In these
illustrations I was able to
cover many different areas in
my personality: the dark and
grim, The Temple Beast;
crazy colors usage, Crazy
Colors; and fantasy and
mystery, Wonderland.
The rst project
that I needed to do was of
shoes; I never thought about
the use of shoes in any major
artwork since the shoes Im
most attracted to aretoo expensive for me
to purchase. But,
I found out that
a simple pair of
sneakers could ex-
press ones feelings
just by changing
their color.
When I rst began
this project I wondered tomyself how the heck am
I going to make
shoes look cool,
and then it hit
me-person-
ication. I
love the idea
of looking
at objects
and thinking about the life
they would have if they were
people. And when I was
looking for places to take
pictures of my shoes I came
across my front room couch.I always think about
those little fears that people
have and thought-what
would shoes be afraid of? So,
I decided to use the couch as
a monster. The shoes would
then have personality and I
would make them afraid of
this giant monster. I guess
one can say I have a veryactive imagination if I could
walk past a couch and see
a monster within, but
nonetheless I had my
perfect situation.
First, I
used the couch
and its center
cushion. Then I
used two identical dog toys
and two flashlights for eyes.
Then I placed a
blanket on top of all these
items. And lastly, for thetwo shoes I used two
green pipe clean-
ers to hold the
laces. I wanted
to see more
of the couch
in the frame
than the twoshoes. Also,
I wanted
the couch to
seem like a
giant monster
so I made sure
to push the shoes
back far enough so
the couch would look
huge.
By using pipe
cleaners wrapped around the
laces of my shoes I was able
to give them the expression
of being scared of the couch.
I also propped the cushions
open to give the couchthe mouth that I saw
in my head, I cant
expect everyone
to be able to see
a simple couch
as having a
mouth now
can I. Well,then I took
the picture
and I had it!
When I
rst began my
illustrations of
the picture I was
ready to switch
it, it was so compli-
cated. But, like most
things I stick to it just to

thats what Ilove about artanyone can

without hitting my breaking
point. I thought I wouldnt
make it.
Well, I made it and
nished my rst illustration
of the couch. I then startedthe next three pictures in the
set. The rst was a simple
changing of the colors. I tried
to pick the colors that would
make one another standout
the best they could, and sur-
prisingly it worked. I loved
it, that is until I started to
make the second illustration.
My second illustration wasof the temple beast. When I

I was thinking am I ever

The many different
techniques and colors I used
for the Wonderland illus-
tration were somewhat more
difcult because there were
so many layers upon layers. I
believe this illustration takesthe longest to open because
of the layers, but its worthit.
The only thing I re-
ally need to say about my il-
lustrations is that I started to
create them for others, but as
the class went on they started
to go more in the direction
of pictures for me. I believe
many can look at my work

and those that cant can then

long week I was able to cre-
ate a couch that resembled a
temple. I even threw in some
perspective work by making
the bricks smaller as they went
back into the picture.
This illustration tookso much time that I literally
had a single weekend to do mythird illustration. Me being me,
I already decided that I needed
an illustration that I would,
maybe would, place upon my
own wall. This is how the
Wonderland illustration was
created.
Wonderland is my
overall favorite illustration
from the shoes set. The way
that I was able to create such
detail on super-small objects
was so exciting for me, even
though many cant even see
the detail unless they place the
picture on the tip of their nose.
This is a close up on the eye in the original couch layout. This eye
took me so long because of its many c urves and shadows. ~EB

The rst thing that I
had to realize while
taking this com-
puter graphics class
was that I was going to have
to create work that, if I had
any say, would be consideredcompletely pointless. But,
like most things I do I made it
about me and I learned to like
it. The teapots were this kind
of assignment.
We created these
teapots as a sort of warm-up
assignment, an introductionto the use of the pen tool. I
began this project with a very
low attitude, how stupid, how
boring, but then I liked it. I
realized very quickly that the
pen tool wasnt that difcult
to use so I started to deviate
from the original assignment.
I always tend to do my own.
We were supposed
to recreate teapots that were
centered in the classroom.
Since I flew through this
basic sketch of the teapots I
began adding personality to
them. I started to give them a
situation, a life, a story; then
I had them all to me. I made
cups, spoons, and squirt pat-terns, anything I thought of at
the moment. I then put some
creative design qualities into
the line work to make them
look even crazier. I like crazy
and had to show it off like
usual.
The nal resultswere quite nice and so I
decided to keep most of them.
I think the way that I created
these pots shows a different
side of my artistic qualities.
This was probably one of
the very few things that I
have created that were more
about having fun and doing
whatever. I liked the freedom
of just expressing myself in a
more simplistic way.
I created this pot with the idea of steam and waterspraying out as the whistle starts to blow. ~EB

STRETCHING THE BOUNDRIES OF A SKETCH
Ive been do-
ing it since
birth; no
sorry
to say its
not smil-
ing- I hit myteens and that
sure changedquick- its draw-
ing. I can still
remember to this
day drawing horses
and every farm animal I
had ever seen on anything I
had in front of me. Yes, I was
one of those little kids that
begged their parents for a pen
at a restaurant just so I could
draw on the placemat- all the
placemats to be correct.
I guess my fasci-
nation with drawing and
pictures came fromwell
actually I dont know where
it came from. Perhaps I had
inherited it from my father
and grandmother.
Well,
whomever it
was I thank
them to the
fullest of
my ability.I grew up
going toa catholic
school, which,
like most catho-
lic grade schools,
had no art program. But,
no matter what the project I
always seemed to showoff
my artistic side.
Ive
done things like
creating an
igloo out of
sugar cubes
to making a
functional
roller-
coaster out
of chicken
wire. Of course my father had
helped me with the hard dif-
cult parts, but I still did it.
It wasnt until the
sixth grade that I nally got a
taste of an art class. I was in
heaven from the moment thatI stepped in the door. There
was so much that I had neverseen, including things that as
I learned from experience-
stained clothes.
I was being entered
into art competitions through-
out the school from sixth
grade until eighth grade.
And I somehow
came in the
top ten every
time. But
thats what
changed
my views
on the art
world. I
wanted rst
place.
When I started high
school I knew that I wanted
to continue taking art
classes. And by the end
I took an art class or
two every single
year. It was sadthat I always put
aside my elec-
tives for gym
classes and art
classes, but I
guess I did for
a reason since
Im majoringin both now.
High
school art was
such a rush for
me. The moment
I walked into my
rst art class in high
school I knew I had to
have the control to make
myself the best I could be.
And from the rst project I
was assigned I did just that.
It didnt matter how
late I stayed up for A.P. and
Honors classes I always set
time aside for my art.
Like junior high
I was still being
introduced tomedia that I never
knew existed.Charcoal, Cray
pas, graphite,
oil pastels,
the drawing
capabilities
were endless.
However it
wasnt until
my junior year
that I realized I
had the ability to
create really cool
artworks.
As one can
see from my many dif-
ferent projects, I like color.
Well, when I rst started out

I wasnt enjoying them because
they were so bland and boring. I
soon learned the value of, well, adding value to my work.
Depending on my moodor the outcome of a project I
could create the drawing to
capture a feeling. It was all in the
lights and darks that I added to
my pictures. Sure, I sometimes
added a splash of color to them
to liven things up a bit, but with
color or without I made pictures
for me.
When I hit college I was
still in the mindset that I could do
whatever with my drawings, but
I was wrong. There were rules
for every project. Rules like the
materials I could use, the paper I
could use, the ideas I could use,
and even the amount of time I
could use.

STRETCHING THE BOUNDRIES OF A SKETCH
My rst drawing
class was such a joy I loved
working with graphite sticks
and even doing erasure draw-
ings. But, the class that really
surprised me was gure draw-
ing.
No, it wasnt the
fact that I had to draw nude
people that got me, it was thefact that I had to capture the
person and their bodys move-
ment in a three minute sketch.
I had never drawn that fast in
my entire life.
Needless to say I
caught on and by the third
class I was having so much
fun with the quick sketches
that I would whine and com-
plain when we had to do the
thirty minute sketches.
I learned a lot about
drawing and capturing images
from that class, but it wasnt
until my second drawing class
that I realized the ability to
do a feeling drawing while
using my imagination. Oh,
and I created my number one
characters for my childrens
book.All in all these
classes taught me a lot about
myself and my abilities to
create drawings, sketches,
and doodles with anything
from pencils, oil pastels, to
erasures. It also taught me the
quality of time and its factors
in creating a piece of artwork.
I hope to pass this knowledge
on when I teach my future
students.

had failure writ-
ten all over
my transcript before Ieven started my rstceramics class. But,
to my surprise some-
times those that
look the worse in
the beginning can
become the best in
the end.
My rst
experience with
the wheel was a bit
nerve racking. And
then I was told that
the way I was trying
to throw the clay
wouldnt work. I was
fed up, tired, crabby,
and ready to quit. But,
when someone told me
that I was doing everything
in a way that would never
create a pot I looked them in
the eye and said watch me.
The one thing that
people dont know about
me is that no matter what
Ill do something to
prove to myself that
I can or cant do it.
This was ceramics. I
was throwing to fast
according to every-
one else in my class
and thats why I kept
messing up. And after
two weeks of class
I realized that I was
messing up more than
everyone else, but to my
surprise I had triple the
amount of nished piecesthan they did.
Sure my process
and stubbornness had me
making double the amount
of mess-ups, but it
also had me creat-
ing more than
enough n-
ished pieces tochoose from formy nal ones.
The
rst assignment
for a holiday was
a tad bit difcult for
me to narrow down.
But like most things for art,
I picked my design ideas
the day they were due. Once
again my imagination had to
be working for this project
since I needed to show the
idea of Christmas in a set
of pottery. The results were
very pleasing to me. I still
look at some of my work and
wonder how I came up with
it.
When I received
my second assign-
ment for a culture
project I real-
ized that I could
depict scenesin the claypots, as a way
to tell a story
or life. I picked
the Mayan culture
because I am really
fascinated with it. The
ideas of their life and the
loss of all their culture
is incredible. This
assignment was
extremely fun
especially
since I got to
do research
on the culture
and recreate
some of their
pieces of ceram-
ics.
The last project for
the class was to glaze our
works. This was exciting
for me because that meant
I got to show those piecesthat were seen by everyoneelse as simple screw-ups
and turn them into amazing
pieces of art. I also, started
a trend among others within
my class by showing them
that those old vases, bowls,
glasses, etc, could be
decorated and displayed.
Overall the intro-
duction and creat-
ing of ceramics
really showed
me another side
to the use of an
imagination. And
I also learned that
no matter what the
material one can
always create art.

A SIMPLE STROKE OF ME
Bob Ross,
thats all
I can re-
ally say
about inspiration
for painting. Unlikeall other little kids I
grew up hating paint-
ing and using things
like nger-paints. I
absolutely hated it.
We always had to
do some sort of little project
that would use watercolors or
tempera paints when I was in
grade school. These projectswere so stupid to me and I
would do my best to limit the
painting to the minimum.
It wasnt until my
sophomore year of high
school that I was nally in-
troduced to the magic of oil
paints. Lets just say when my
teacher came up to me and
asked me how
long Id been
painting for
because I
blended my
oils betterthan anyone
else I knew
I found my
key.
Sad to say
that particular teacher
was retiring that year so, like
Ive always had to do, I had
to show the new teacher the
real me-the artist me- theperson who had to
out-do everyone I
could. Needless
to say I did it
on the rst
day of class
and from
there on she
helped me
develop into the artist that I
am now.
She made me create
things I didnt know existed,
made me paint on objects
that I didnt know I could, and she even taught me to
paint for me.
I created many dif-
ferent paintings in my high
school career. I even had
the chance to paint things
like key boxes, chairs, and
tabletops. But, the ultimate
chance that I received in
school was the chance topaint our mascot on
our gym doors and
the front ofce
window.
But, like
most things in
my life I only
do it when Im
told. I really
do wish to know what
I could really do if I
actually took the time
to create some-
thing for my own
enjoyment in theproper amount
of time.
Time,
time is a big
issue when it
comes to my
painting abili-
ties and Ive
been learning
this since myrst day of col-
lege. For many
that dont know
me Ill ll you in,
Im a huge procras-
tinator.
I dont mean
like waiting until the
last week to paint
my paintings. No, I
mean like deciding
my topic the thirty
seconds before its
do, standing and
watching otherspaint in class
and staring at
my blank can
vas because I
just cant do
anything, and
Im the type
of person tha
can paint the
entire paint-ing no matter
the size in one
night.
Last night
is my main motto
these days for my
paintings, I love it, and
I love the rush and fear
that I wont nish. But
the
ultimate
chance
beauty
and heart

that wonders how good I could
truly be if I actually took my
time on a painting, if I actually
put 100% into a project. But, no,
I cant, I like my 50% far toomuch.
My projects range from
little things like body image
problems that girls face or thepressure of being told youre
worthless two much bigger
problems like fear, love, beauty,
and heart.
Of course this is just
my point of view and what I
think is the most important
things in life, but I guess I can
sayIts my work so Ill do what-
ever I believe is important. And
also whatever is inspireing me.
The one thing that has
really been capturing my mind
and sort of inspiring me lately
would have to be beauty and

heart. This is why I will, well
if I dont change my mind atthe last minute, be focusing
on the beauty and heart of the
horse and its bodily move-ments.
My last painting was
primarily that. I focused on the
horse and how such a huge,
beautiful, majestic animal
has its heart and soul sitting
there for us to see. The key
to the soul the eye. I love the
idea of being able to look at
something and have my ideas
become clear for others to see
as well.
This would have to
be one of my favorite things
about paintings one could
show with color, shape, im-
age, and layout whatever they
wanted to show. I love the
ability to be able to show a
complex situation or prob-lem and have others see my
views on that particular idea
or topic.But, besides all
that, I have been creating
many different types of
work to compliment work
from my other classes. And,
like most of the things that
I tend to create they are
based off of my best helper
my imagination.
My imagination
helps me show off the
visual side of my many dif-
ferent dreams, short stories,
and even some of my novel
work. I love this about
painting, and one day per-
haps I will be able to paint a
picture book for children.

I created this painting because of the many differnt factors that children have to
face while growing up. I fell to pressure and want others to see their horror. ~EBThis is one of the most personal paintings that I have ever created. It happens to
everyone. Everyone is their own individual and they need to remember that.~EB

N
o amount
of money
will ever
keep
me from doing thistype of artwork.Yes, colored pencils
they are magical and
make me feel like a
child all over again.
I was rst introduced to
this particular medium my
sophomore year of high
school. When I rst heard
my teacher say that we were
going to do a colored pencil
project I nearly fell out of
my seat laughing. How silly
I thought, doing a project
with simple Crayola colored
pencils. But, to my surprise it
wasnt Krafts time to shine.
Prismacolors, thats where
my heart belonged, I never
thought I could love a media
as much as I
currently do.
The rst time I
started color-
ing with thesespecial, andvery expen-
sive, pencils I
was star struck.
My mother, on the
other hand, didnt
care for them because
they were so darn expen-
sive.
But, after my rst
project she real-
ized that I was
worth the big
box, the
extremely
expensive
yet beauti-
ful 132 set
box for
approxi-
mately $200!
Lets just say thats probably
the most expensive gift that I
have recieved in a very, very
long time. And I think aboutthat every time that I pick upa colored pencil and begin
creating an artwork. I love
the texture of the pencils, I
love the way they smooth
onto any material. Its so
liquid like, so peaceful, and
yet when I use them I make
them pop.
I would observe
many people in my classes
using the Prismacolors
putting layer after
layer on top of one
another until they
had this very soft
and beautiful
picture. And one
friend of mine
would do it until
he had a deep, smooth, dark
creation, and from there I
found my own style.
When I usecolored pencils I use
them heavy. I mean to
say that I press them
down with a certain
amount of pressure
so I dont need to
do the layer on
top of layer, half
a year for one
picture type of
way. I do say that
colored pencils take
the most out of me
when it comes to
time, I can never cre-
ate any type of picture
in less than a month
with colored pencils Im
just too particular.
I like the idea of
extreme lights and darks so
I have also created the
style of placing blackalong all the outlines
of any picture that
I am coloring. I
also place white
in the middle
and use it as m
blender for all
my pictures. I
actually tried
the prismacol
or blender on
day and gave
it away after
fteen minute
because I didn
like its handi-
work.
Needless to
say if I had to pick
one thing to do for
the rest of my life coloring with my prisma-
colors would be it.

ABOUT ME
Theres a lot that
people dont know
about me and Im
denitely not going to
tell you right now. What I will
tell you is that Im a very active
person.
I grew up learning that
school was the only important
thing about life. Well need-
less to say I found sports and
decided those where going to be
the most important thing about
my life.
Ive been playing
many sports my entire life start-
ing from the fourth grade on. Ido have to say that I learned a
lot about myself through sports.
Also, Ive seen its one of the
best outlets for my ADHD.
Sports have been there for
me as a stress relief, a social
hangout, and even a character
builder.
My competiveness that
I tend to express when it comes
to art is from my many different
sport teams and all the differ-
ent coaches that Ive had over
the years. Another key thing
that my sports have given me is
inspiration to express myself.
The main one would have to be
horses.
Ever since I could
remember Ive been surrounded
by the sweet smell of manure
and hay. Sure, some of you
may be thinking yuck what a
horrible smell, but when you
grow up with it its like a fresh
towel from the dryer. Anyways,
I guess thats where I get my
obsession with the horse as an
element in most things that I do.
But, other than all that
Im a big bum. I never dress-up
unless I have to, I never spendmore than ve minutes picking
out my clothes in the morn-
ing, and I hardly ever look in
the mirror except for when Im
brushing my teeth.
I tend to spend my
days writing stories and poems
and thinking up new possibili-
ties for artworks. I really enjoy
day dreaming about many
different worlds and adventures
and I hope to share as much as
I can with as many people as I
can so they to can have a won-
derful outlook for their future.
