with State-Of-The-Art Scroll CompressorTechnology

ASHRAE Standard 90.1 - 2010

AllTrane chillers meet and exceed the efficiency levels mandated by ASHRAE Standard 90.1.Thisstandard requires higher efficiencies than past technologies can deliver. In fact, energy efficiencyis so paramount; the US Federal Government has adopted Standard 90.1. Federal Executive Ordermandates energy consuming devices procured must be in the top 25% of their class. In the caseof chillers, ASHRAE 90.1 is the product standard for measurement.

Potential Risk

Not only has ASHRAE 90.1 been adopted by the US Federal Government, it’s expected to beadopted domestically, if not globally, in the future. Make sure that your chillers, as well as yourentire HVAC system, comply or you may be caught retrofitting your project with new equipmentand paying extra design dollars if the code changes during construction.

Efficiency

The energy efficiency ofTrane scroll chillers results in energy costs lower than most othercomparable chillers. Superior engineered efficiencies are obtained by combining advanced scrollcompressor energy efficient features with up to date heat exchanger technology and state-of-the-art controls. Here’s How:

• Scroll compressor’s positive displacement design

• Dual refrigerant circuits

• Multiple compressors 40 through 70 ton models

• Optimum system design

• Reduced friction

• No valves

• Advanced heat transfer surfaces

Application Consideration

Product Selection

Both CGWQ and CCAQ products are offered in 7 models each ranging in capacity from 20 to 70nominal tons. See Table 3 and Table 4, p. 11 to select the model best suited for your application.Since actual unit capacity can vary significantly from “nominal capacity”, it is important to baseyour selection on the actual conditions. Selection of the correct model will require attention to theminimum, as well as the full load capacity required. Selection of the proper equipment is animportant part of a successful installation. Equipment sized too large will cycle more frequently andas a potential result lead to poor temperature and humidity control, shortened equipment life andhigher utility costs. Equipment sized too small will not be able to meet peak cooling demands.

Unit location

Units should be installed indoors or protected where exposure to rain or water splash is minimal.A level foundation or flooring must be provided which will support at least 150 percent of theoperating weight of the unit. Service clearance must allow for removal of compressors. See“Dimensional Data,” p. 20 for specific clearance requirements. All units must also allow for spaceto service vessels. The unit foundation must be rigid to reduce vibration transmission to aminimum. Use of optional vibration isolation pads is recommended for applications that aresensitive to vibration and noise.

Ambient Limits — CCAQ/CAUJ Combination

Minimum AmbientTemperature Limit

The minimum outdoor ambient temperature for operation of a CCAQ compressor chiller incombination with a CAUJ air cooled condenser is 40°F.This minimum is driven by compressorchiller starting considerations and not by effectiveness of condenser ambient controls once thesystem is up and running. Fan cycling and optional low ambient dampers do not mitigate the lowambient starting problem. On a cold day with outdoor ambient temperature below 40°F the liquidline pressure at the expansion valve inlet is extremely low. On start, the suction pressureimmediately plunges into the freezing range causing a nuisance fault.

Maximum AmbientTemperature Limit

The maximum ambient temperature limit for the CCAQ/CAUJ operation is 110°F.

Condenser Water Limitations

CGWQ water cooled chiller units start and operate satisfactorily over a wide range of loadconditions. Reducing the condenser water temperature below 85°F is an effective method oflowering the power input required. Beyond certain limits, however, the effect of further reducingcondenser water temperature causes a reduction in the pressure drop across the expansion valveto a point where system instability may occur.

In general, continuous machine operation with entering condenser water temperature below 75°Fis not recommended. When the condenser water temperature is expected to drop below 75°F, it isrecommended that some form of condenser water temperature control be used to ensure optimalmachine performance. Condenser water temperatures above 95°F are not recommended except asapproved by factory engineering.

Heat Recovery using condenser water is available, with applications reviewed by factoryengineering. Generally, leaving water of 125°F represents the maximum limit.

Application Consideration

Evaporator WaterTreatment

The use of untreated or improperly treated water in chillers may result in scaling, erosion, corrosion, and algae or slime buildup. This will adversely affect heat transfer between the water andsystem components. Proper water treatment must be determined locally and depends on the typeof system and local water characteristics.

Neither salt nor brackish water is recommend for use inTrane chillers. Use of either will lead to ashortened life.Trane encourages the employment of a qualified water treatment specialist, familiarwith local water conditions, to assist in the establishment of a proper water treatment program.

Foreign matter in the chilled water system can also increase pressure drop and, consequently, reduce water flow. For this reason it is important to thoroughly flush all water piping to the unitbefore making the final piping connections to the unit.

The capacities give in the Performance Data section of this catalog are based on water with afouling factor of 0.0001°F·ft²·h/Btu (in accordance withAHRI 550/590). For capacities at other foulingfactors, see Performance Selection Software.

Condenser WaterTreatment

Use of untreated or improperly treated condenser cooling water in any water cooled condensingunit could result in tube fouling, scaling, erosion, corrosion, algae, or slime; and, as a result causereduced performance and increase the potential for unit failure. It is recommended that the servicesof a qualified water treatment specialist be engaged to determine what condenser cooling watertreatment and/or bleed-rate, if any, is advisable.Trane assumes no responsibility for the results ofuntreated or improperly treated water.

Water Pumps

Avoid specifying or using 3600 rpm condenser water and chilled water pumps. Such pumps mayoperate with objectionable noise and vibration. In addition, a low frequency beat may occur dueto the slight difference in operating rpm between water pumps and the scroll compressors.Wherenoise and vibration-free operation is important,Trane encourages the use of 1750 rpm pumps.

Remote Condenser

Remote condensers should be located as close as possible to the chiller to ensure minimumpressure drops of discharge refrigerant. If non-Trane condensers are provided, a subcooling circuitmust be provided in order to achieve cataloged performances (16°F [-8.9°C] subcooling).

Controls

Human Interfaces

Trane Scroll Chillers offer the completely integrated controller with an easy-to-use operatorinterface panel, LCD graphics display. The display provides a “Window” concept allowing the userto navigate the ‘Window’ in all directions. This advanced interface allows the user to access allinformation concerning Relay Outputs,Analog Outputs, Sensor Inputs, Set Points,Alarms, ServiceTools, Chiller States, and Lockouts as well as graph all sensor data.

Hardware Protection

A six (6) layer microprocessor printed circuit board provides the highest level of machine reliability. Each relay output has its own snubber on both the normally open contacts and the normally closedcontacts. The relay outputs are individually fused to farther protect the system from shorts.Thisprotection is rounded out through poly fuse protection on the sensor inputs.

System Protection

A complete safety lockout system protects the compressor operation to avoid compressor andevaporator failures. The controller directly senses pressures, temperatures, ampere, motor faults, etc. All control variables that govern the operation of the chiller, evaporator and condenser areevaluated every second for exact control and protection.

Standalone Controls

Interface to standalone units is very simple; only a remote auto/stop for scheduling is required forunit operation. Signals from a time clock or some other remote device can be wired to the externalauto/stop input.

Standard Features

• External Auto/Stop — A jobsite provided contact closure will turn the unit on and off.

• ChilledWater Flow Interlock —A jobsite provided contact closure from a flow proving device(mandatory)

• Emergency Stop (optional)—A jobsite supplied contact opening wired to this input will turnthe unit off and require a manual reset of the unit microcomputer. This closure is typicallytriggered by a jobsite supplied system such as a fire alarm.

• Chilled Water Pump Control (optional)— Unit controls can provide an output to control thechilled water pump(s). One contact closure to the chiller is all that is required to initiate thechilled water system.

Controls

• ChilledWater Reset— Controller will accept analog input from BMS system for chilled waterreset (Optional).

• Condenser Control — Unit controls provide an output to control the condenser water pump(CGWQ) or condenser fan(s) (CCAQ). In addition, the controller allows variable frequencydrive control of cooling tower fan motors, condenser fan motors or ambient controldampers for pin point control of head pressure.

Simple Interface with Other Control Systems

Controls afford simple interface with other systems, such as time clocks, building automationsystems, and ice storage systems. This gives you the flexibility to meet job requirements withoutthe need to learn a complicated control system. This setup has the same standard features as astand-alone water chiller, with the possibility of having additional optional features.

Easy Interface to All Building Management Systems

Controlling the scroll chiller with building management systems is state-of-the-art, yet simple withBACnet®, Modbus™, Johnson N2 or LonTalk® Communications Interface for Chillers.Thecontroller supports all of the standard BMS communications systems.

• BACnet is ASHRAE’s standard BMS communications protocol which allowscommunications between different manufacturers’ equipment. BACnet IP is standard,BACnet MS/TP is optional.

Control of CAUJ Fans and Optional Low Ambient Dampers

Application requirement

CCAQ Unit Controller must control condenser ambient control devices such as fan cycling andoptional low ambient dampers. As a result the interconnecting field wiring must be done by others. For pairingTrane CCAQ Compressor Chiller withTrane CAUJ Air Cooled Condenser, the followingfield wiring is to be done by others

Fan Cycling Control

One control wire for each condenser fan plus a common must be run between CCAQ compressorchiller and CAUJ condenser.

Low Ambient Dampers (when applicable)

One shielded pair for each condenser must be run between CCAQ compressor chiller and CAUJ aircooled condenser.

Notes:

• CCAQ products are not suitable for applications where the matching condenser is located in anambient temperature below 40°F or above 110°F.

• Optional CAUJ low ambient dampers do not make the CCAQ/CAUJ combination suitable for operation when outdoor ambient temperature is less than 40°F. Low ambient dampers are not generally needed for outdoor ambient temperatures above 40°F.
