Which Americans do you think were unhappy about Jackson’ Election

Inauguration People flocked to D.C.

Many were 1st time voters

More could vote in election of 1828 than 1824 – why?

Who still couldn’t vote?

D.C. was overwhelmed with people from all over the country

14.3 Frontier to White House

What do you see?

These images tell the story of how Jackson became president. If you were to tell the story, what other important events would you include?

Grew up with mother and brothers in poverty

Self Made Man Cont. Became a Lawyer

Corrupt Bargain Ran in 1824 against John Quincy Adams

and Henry Clay No one got majority of electoral votes so it

went to the House Clay urged his supporters to vote for

Adams so Adams would get enough votes to win

Adams promised Clay job as Secretary of State

Pay Attention????

People’s Choice Jackson was furious about corrupt bargain

Used the time between elections to form the Democratic Party

Party represented the ordinary farmers, workers and poor

Jackson nickname “Old Hickory” because that was the toughest wood and he was incredibly tough

Where did he earn that nickname?

14.4 Approach to Governing

Who is pictured at the top of this image?

Why do you think Jackson is pictured this way?

What is he doing?

Kitchen Cabinet Did not rely on his official cabinet for advice Who approves cabinet appointments? He relied on his friends and political

supporters They would meet in the kitchen of the

White House and talk politics The Rich and Well Born were very

suspicious about this Thought these men were not the proper

men to run the country

Spoils System Civil Servant – someone who works for the

government

Most civil servants viewed their jobs as jobs for life

Jackson wanted to rotate people

Jackson removed many republicans and replaced them with Democrats

In reality only about 10% of people lost their jobs and most deserved to be replaced

Rich and Well Born did not like this though

Are you paying attention still?

14.5 Nullification Crisis

What does the cartoonist imply that John C. Calhoun wants?

Why did he label each step like he did?

What does the cartoonist show Jackson trying to do?

Why is the cartoonist ling at the bottom of the stairs?

What is the intended message? Do you agree?

Nullification Crisis Tariff – tax on imported good

Northern states wanted tariffs because it earned them more money for their factory made goods and they could outsell foreign competition

Southern states were against this because they were worried it would hurt their cotton sales

Nullification Crisis John C Calhoun called on Southern states to

nullify the tariffs

Jackson lowered them by the South was still unhappy

Calhoun lead a campaign to reject the tariff laws

This was similar to Virginia and Kentucky resolutions that Jefferson encouraged 30 years prior

South Carolina threatened to secede

Solution South Carolina decided not to secede.

Congress passed a bill lowering tariffs again

Tensions between North and South were increasing and would continue to do so in the years ahead

Jackson had upset States rights supporters

John C Calhoun

14.6 Battle the Banks of the US

What does Jackson have in his hand? What is he trying to do?

What danger does the snake represent?

What is the cartoonist’s intended message?

Do you agree?

Battle of the Banks Who started the idea of the National Bank?

Jackson was against the bank because he thought it only helped the rich

He distrusted the bank’s president Nicholas Biddle.

Bank’s charters was due for renewal in 1836

Henry Clay decided it couldn’t wait that long

Bank Clay wanted to run against Jackson in 1832

and he thought he could get the people to dislike Jackson if he pushed the bank issue

Clay pushed the issue for Congress so Jackson would have to vote on it

Clay thought if Jackson voted for it he’d lose the vote of the common folk and if he voted against it he’d lose the vote of the rich folk

Bank Jackson voted against the bank and still won

re-election because there were more common folk than rich folk

Jackson then starved the bank to death by taking it’s money and putting it in small state banks run by his supporters

Jackson’s enemies called these “pet banks”

Jackson’s crusade to destroy the bank upset the rich and wellborn people

Nicholas Biddle

Poor Henry Clay… never became president….

Can I have your attention please?

14.7 Jackson’s Indian Policy

Where are these people going?

Who has sent them there?

Why is this happening?

Are the Native Americans being treated fairly? Why or why not?

Indian Policy White settlers were constantly in conflict

with the Natives

Would make treaties with them but they usually still forced Indians off their lands

Jackson wanted to push them even further off their land

5 main tribes: Creek, Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Seminole

Indian Removal Act 1830 Jackson passed to remove Indians to

West of Mississippi

Began forcing them to the west

Trail of Tears White people protested Washington to stop

treating the Indians so harshly

Creeks refused to leave Alabama and they were handcuffed and forced off their land

Seminoles resisted for 10 years.

Some were made to leave their land but some were able to hide out in Florida
