DEFENCE AND SECURITY India’s defence problem is more complex because of her long coastline and long-land frontiers. To its north lies Nepal, Bhutan, and China; to the northwest lies Pakistan; to the east lies Bangladesh, Myanmar, and China; and to the south lies the island country of Sri Lanka. India, having a history of conflicts with Pakistan and China, is confronted with dangers of wars and intrusions in the sensitive border states. However, the defence policy of India aims at promoting and sustaining durable peace in the sub-continent, especially its neighbourhood and equipping its defence forces adequately to safeguard against aggression. The president of India is the Supreme Commander of the armed force. However, the Cabinet is responsible for national defence. The Administrative control of armed forces is exercised by the Ministry of Defence, which constitutes the following. (a) Department of Defence (b) Department of Defence Production and Supplies (c) Department of Defence Research and Development (DDRD). Indian Air Force Joins Hand Towards Humanitarian As-sistance To MaldivesIn a swift response to the ‘National Crisis’ faced by the Maldives, following the shutting down of the desalination plants in a fire incident in capital in Male’, the Indian Air Force had pressed fixed wing aircraft into service, carrying a consignment of po-table water to meet the immediate requirement of the people in Male’. Five aircraft including Two C-17 Globemaster-III and Three IL-76 with 153 tones on 05 December 2014 and Three aircraft including Two C-17 and one IL-76 with 130 tones on 06 December 2014 were pressed into service. Two C-17 aircraft have delivered 90 tones of potable water to Male’ on 07 Dec 14. Maldives, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, has no natural water source and consumes only treated sea water.

Platinum Jubilee for INS CIRCARSINS Circars the depot ship of Eastern Naval Command is also known as the Flagship of the East, celebrated its Platinum Jubilee on 12 December 2014. It was in 1923 when the British identi-fied Visakhapatnam as an important convoy assembly point for military operation a small Naval Base was set up on 12 December 1939. With a need to expand, the base was formally established as HMIS Circars on 12 April 1942.

India – Russia Navy Exercise (INDRA NAVY-14)India – Russia Navy Exercise (INDRA NAVY-14). India-Russia Naval Exercises, named ‘INDRA NAVY’ are being conducted since 2003. The first Indo-Russian bilateral naval exercise was conducted in May 2003 on both the Western and Eastern seaboards of India. On 14th July, ships of the Eastern Fleet of the Indian Navy, viz., Shivalik, Ranvijay and Shakti, under the Command of Rear Admiral Atul Kumar Jain, VSM, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet, arrived at Vladivostok, Russia to participate in the exercise. The major aims of the visit are strength-ening and development of friendly relations between the navies of the two countries and conduct of joint Naval exercise INDRA NAVY 14. In the exercise, the Russian Navy was represented by guided-missile cruiser Varyag, destroyer Bystry, large landing craft Peresvet along with supply vessels. Air assets of the Pacific Fleet and Indian Navy were also actively involved in the exercise.

DRDO successfully tested an indigenous 1000 kg glide bombRecently, India’s Defence Research and Development Organi-sation (DRDO) successfully tested an indigenously built 1000 kg glide bomb. The bomb had successfully hit a target 100 km away in the Bay of Bengal off the Odisha coast.The bomb was dropped by an Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft in the ocean. It glided for nearly 100 km before hitting the tar-get with great precision. The bomb was guided by an on-board navigation system. The flight of the glide bomb was monitored by radars and electro-optic systems stationed at Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Odisha’s Balasore district, about 230 km from Bhubaneswar.
