The business community has been very critical of the state government for imple- menting GST in Jammu and Kashmir and has been constantly saying that the “implementation of this new tax regime will erode state’s fiscal autonomy.” The step has been taken ahead of all-party meeting convened by the state gov- ernment on June 13 to dis- cuss the GST with opposition parties. Sources informed that the CM has decided person- ally to intervene and pacify the business community after they had announced to organize a joint sit-in at Press Enclave, Lal Chowk to lodge their protest against the implementation of GST. However, after CM’s invi- tation, the business com- munity cancelled protest program. The meeting has been scheduled to be held at CM’s residence at 3 Pm on June 11, sources said. “CM has called meeting with business community to clear their doubts about the fact that GST won’t erode state’s special status,” said a senior official of Finance Department wishing ano- nymity as he is not autho- rized to talk about CM’s schedule to media. “There is lot of confusion about the implementation of GST in JK, with traders fearing that it would erode fiscal autonomy of the state. The meeting with CM would clear the air and hopefully there will be no confusion after the meeting,” he said. As per officials, the invi- tation has been sent to busi- ness bodies such as Kash- mir Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Federation Chamber of Industries of Kashmir (FCIK), Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Front (KTMF) besides prom- inent hoteliers, and trade association. Confirming the develop- ment, President, Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Mushtaq Ahmad Wani said “yes we have been invited by the CM for the meeting to deliberate the implementa- tion of GST in JK.” “There are valid appre- hensions of business com- munity regarding the imple- mentation of GST which would harm our special status. In the meet, we will express our opinion about the new tax regime before the CM,” he said. “Earlier we had decided to hold a joint sit-in pro- test, but following our announcement, we got call from CM’s office inviting us for a meeting to delib- erate on GST. As a result of which we have deferred the program,” he said. Chairman, Kashmir Eco- nomic Alliance, Muhammad Yaseen Khan said “ they will join the meeting only to put forth view point regarding the GST, which is anti-trad- ers and would infringe upon JK’s special status.” “Besides, we want to convey that business com- munity is not against system, but at the same time we want to clarify to the government that we won’t allow any decision to be implemented which will harm our special status,” Khan added. It may be recalled that cabinet on Wednesday approved a four-day special session of the House from July 17 to evolve consensus on GST. The mainstream oppo- sition parties however have been complaining that the government had ignored them during drafting the GST. National Conference (NC) on Friday submitted a memorandum to Governor NN Vohra and discussed the party’s apprehensions over the extension of Constitu- tional Amendment 101 to the state to facilitate the exten- sion of GST. Scores protest in Kargil against poor BSNL service Kargil, June 10: Scores of people today took a procession march in Kargil town to register their pro- test against Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) for its poor mobile phone connectivity and ‘near to non- existent interent’ services in the Himalayan region of Ladakh. The protesters, who were under the banner of Immam Khomani Memorial Trust (IKMT), were saying that incase the BSNl, which is the only service provider in the region, fails to restore the services, it will be asked to wind of office from the Kargil district. “The internet is out of order since January 24, though it was briefly restored for 10 days in April but got busted again. Now there is no regu- lar mobile service since then, said one of the protesters,” said one of the protesters. “Today thousand of peoples gath- ered after after-noon prayers at Jama Masjid and and took a protest rally under the banner of IKMT through Lal Chowk and reached BSNL office. However, police stopped protesters from entering the BSNL office.” Later on a meeting of BSNL offi- cials, district administration and some members of public took place and BSNL was given a week’s time to restore mobile and internet services. Altaf Bukhari holds review meeting in Baramulla Baramulla, June 10: Educa- tion Minister Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari Saturday chaired a review meeting to take stock of the implementation of vari- ous decisions taken during last Baramulla District Development Board meeting. Pledging to restore the dis- trict’s pristine glory, the min- ister, according to an official spokesperson, said that various measures are afoot to augment the existing infrastructure in view of the necessities created by the population expansion in the district. Addressing the meeting, Altaf Bukhari, who is Chairman Baramulla DDB, directed the district administration to put in their best. Aadhaar-PAN linking must for ITR filing: Govt New Delhi, June 10: The govern- ment today made it clear that the linking of the Aadhaar and the Per- manent Account Number (PAN) will be a "must" for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) and obtaining PAN from July 1. The assertion comes a day after the Supreme Court upheld the validity of an I-T Act provision making Aad- haar mandatory for allotment of PAN cards and for ITR filing, but had put a partial stay on its implementation till a Constitution bench addressed the issue of right to privacy. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), policy-making body for the I-T department, said the apex court's order had only given a "partial relief" to those who do not have an Aadhaar or an Aadhaar enrolment ID, and the taxman, hence, "will not cancel" the PAN of such individuals. The Board said it was issuing a three-point gist of the SC order and called it the "effect of the judgement" in order to clear any doubts in the minds of taxpayers. "From July 1, 2017 onwards, every person eligible to obtain Aadhaar must quote their Aadhaar number or their Aadhaar enrolment ID number for filing of ITRs as well as for applica- tions for PAN.
