Brandon Fullerton has 125 yards on eight catches, ranking him 13th in the conference with 17.9 yard per reception Also contributing to the air attack is Stevann Brown, CSC’s quarterback’s second favorite receiver with 177 yards on 11 receptions, including a 75-yard catch and run in the opener at Fort Lewis. Colt Foster has shown big play-making ability on multiple occasions among his 10 receptions for 184 yards, and scored what proved the winning touchdown in the Eagles’ comeback in week one. Tevon Wright, who emerged as a top deep threat late last season and in the spring, continues to impress early on in 2017, with a 57-yard score in CSC’s win over FLC, and a total of 105 yards on six catches so far on the season. Know Your Opponent The Grizzlies come to Chadron Saturday with a 2-1 record after

beating Western State Colorado University and Fort Lewis College. The two wins for the Grizzlies already matches their win total from last year.

With a young team and a dangerous offense averaging 423.7 pass yards per game to lead the nation, the Eagle’s defense will be put to test. Led by their quarterback Nick Rooney, who has completed 68.8% of his passes for 903 yards and eight touchdowns, the Grizzlies offense has multiple nationally ranked receivers for Rooney to target.

Marquese Surrell is fourth in the nation in receiving yards and seventh in all-purpose yards. Jimmy Holtrop is second in the nation for receiving touchdowns and Chad Hovasse is 24th in receiving yards and 22nd in yards per reception.

Their running back, Corey Brown, has 358 yards on the year on 54 carries with 4 touchdowns. His 358 net yards is 50 yards more than the Eagles have ran for as a team all year.

Defensively, the Grizzlies are led by Garrett Jackson who ranks sixth in the nation with 21 solo tackles. As a team, they rank 10th in the conference while allowing an average of 480.3 yards per game.

Last Time They Met

Last season the Eagles traveled to Alamosa, Colorado to face the Grizzlies for their third game of the year. Firing out of the gates, CSC scored 16 first quarter points and one second quarter touchdown to take a 23-7 halftime lead off. They failed to convert on a two point conversion on one of their touchdowns.

The Grizzlies made second half changes for the better to score 10 points before the Eagle’s found the end zone one last time.

Phil Romero would catch a 3-yard touchdown pass with 9:42 left in the fourth quarter before Addie Brown scored on a 91-yard punt return with 7:48 left in the game to end the scoring. The punt return resulted in the game winning touchdown, giving the Grizzlies the 31-30 victory. CSC missed an opportunity, with three seconds showing on the clock, to kick a game-winning field goal.

Home Sickness Chadron State leads the all-time series against the Adams State

Grizzlies 21-4, officially, although the teams have actually met 28 times. Three of the contests have been since vacated by rule of the NAIA and NCAA.

All four of the wins for the Grizzlies came in Alamosa, first in 1988, then in 1999, 2005, and in 2016. The first-ever clash between ASU and CSC actually came in 1987, at Elliott Field in Chadron. Adams finished the game ahead 21 points to none, but the Grizzlies had to forfeit the victory later in the season due to an NAIA ruling on ineligible players. Therefore, “officially” Adams State has never won a game on CSC’s home turf.

The two games in the 2011 and 2012 seasons, won by Chadron State, were also later removed from the official record by the NCAA, for similar reasons.

She Got Game While not traveling this weekend, the first scholarship female

player in Division II history enrolled at Adams State University this fall. Rebecca Longo made national headlines earlier in the year after signing as a placekicker for the Grizzlies out of Basha High School in Chandler, Arizona. Longo connected on 35 of 38 extra point attempts, and was true on her lone field goal attempt of 30 yards, as a high school senior in 2016.

Just this past week, she was interviewed on an episode of “Pickler & Ben”, a new daily talk show starring Kellie Pickler and Ben Aaron.

Quick hits

n With 2,167 career rushing yards, Derek Jackson can crack the Chadron State all-time top 10 in career total rushing yards with 57 more yards on the ground in the fall of 2017.

n With 15.0 career sacks, Collin Eisenman can reach fifth on the all-time sacks list with

just 4.5 more sacks this season. He currently sits just outside the top 10 with 15.0 sacks. Eisenman needs just four tackles for loss to make the top ten in that category as well.

n Senior safety Ryan Wood is 26 tackles away from the top-10 on the career lists, and 55

tackles away from catching former Eagle linebacker and current coaching assistant Dylan Furrier for the sixth spot.

n Sophomore receiver Jackson Dickerson leads the conference and is eighth in the nation

with his eight receptions per game, so far in 2017 n Redshirt freshman quarterback Dalton Holst is fourth in the conference with 232.3

passing yards per game and fourth in total offense. n CSC is one of seven teams in Division II whose offensive line has allowed only one sack

in 2017, ranking them third in the nation. Coach Jay Long’s offensive lines have been one of the most consistent around in pass protection since his start at CSC in 2012, finishing among the top three in the conference every season with a phenomenal average of only 1.2 sacks per game over his five-plus years

n The 2017 Eagle defense also leads the RMAC in sacks, tackles for loss, passing efficiency

defense, total defense, opponent 1st downs and passing yards allowed, a category which they led at the end of 2016 as well. They are ranked second in scoring defense.

Jay LongHead Coach/Offensive LineSixth Year

2017 - Jay Long has been a rock solid presence in his five years as Chadron State’s head football coach.

The CSC alum is responsible for steadying the program with a focus on tradi-tion, culture, and community, in the midst of Chadron State football’s greatest adversity.

Long’s first year coaching the Eagles, they ended the season as the 18th ranked team in the nation by both the American Football Coaches Association and D2Football.com.

In 2013, the Eagles went 8-3 and finished second in the RMAC, with the No. 1 third-down conversion percentage in the nation. In 2014, CSC wound up third in the RMAC with another 8-3 mark.

In 2016, the Eagles were the top passing defense in the RMAC, allowing only 179.5 yards per game through the air.

In five years, Long, who also serves as the offensive line coach, has coached six all-conference linemen, four All-Americans, a Harlon Hill national finalist, and men-tored All-American and NFL player Garrett Gilkey. His offensive lines have been top 3 in the RMAC in sacks allowed for five consecutive years.

Long is the 25th head football coach at CSC and the third who also played for the Eagles. Orin Weymouth and Ruffus Trapp also played and coached for Chadron State; however, a former football player hasn’t coached for the school since 1937.

Long spent three seasons as the head coach at Black Hills State in Spearfish, S.D., where he guided the Yellowjackets to a 15-15 record before coming to Chadron State in 2012. His overall career record, including his time at BHSU, is 39-38.

Prior to being the head coach at Black Hills State, he was an assistant coach at the school from 2003-09. During that time, he served as the offensive coordinator, offensive line coach, recruiting coordinator and the strength and conditioning coach. The Yellowjackets won two conference titles and appeared in the NAIA playoffs two times while Long coached the offensive line.

Long, who graduated from Chadron State College in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in science, was a two-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference selection at center and also earned Farm Team All-American honors. He also wrestled at heavyweight and qualified for the national tournament for the Eagles.

Long and his wife, Kresi, have three children, Carson, Kaelee and Alivia.
