MARCH 2020 NEWSLETTER
CHAFFEY-BURKE
ELEMENTARY 4405 Sardis Street Burnaby BC V5H 1K7
[email protected] T: 604-296-9008
PRINCIPALS MESSAGE
I find it hard to believe February has come and gone. It doesn’t feel like I
have been at Chaffey Burke for a month already. Thank you to all the
families, staff and students for the warm welcome to Chaffey Burke. It is a
great place with so many exciting things happening all over the school! In
true Lower Mainland fashion, I was warmly greeted by mother nature my
first week here with a little sun, some rain and of course a day of snow!
As we turn the calendar to March, we will be having our second set of
early dismissal days focusing on Assessment and Student Learning.
Teachers will be participating in either Student Led Conferences or Three-
Way Conferences in March (11 & 12) and April (15 & 16). Three-way
conferences will be done by teachers who have chosen to do them in
March prior to the final writing of report cards which will be sent out on April
6, 2020. Some teachers have chosen to do their Student Led Conferences
prior to Spring Break while others will be doing theirs in April after term two
report cards go home. We will have two early dismissal days for the
conferences, one on March 12th where we dismiss at 1:45 and one on April
15th where we will be dismissing students at 1:00. I encourage you all to
come out and see what your children have done and help them set goals
as we move into the third term.
All parents know that good sleep is important for their child’s health. This
knowledge can easily be forgotten, though, in our busy modern lifestyles.
Good sleep, both of our own and that of our children, is often one of the
first things to be neglected when we have too much to do. Recent
scientific research is discovering that quality sleep is crucial to our overall physical, mental, and emotional
health. For children, quality sleep may mean the difference between normal and abnormal development and
learning. Parents need to take sleep very seriously. Many people know that good sleep is necessary for our
bodies and brains to rest and reset.
Besides getting enough sleep, children and parents should also practice good “sleep hygiene” to make getting
to sleep easier. Electronics such as TV, iPads, and cell phones should be removed from the bedroom. Because
the blue light emitted from the electronic devices interferes with the brains’ ability to fall asleep, children should
not use any screens (tablets, phones, computers, TVs) at least 30 minutes before bed.
More information on “Sleep” can be found on our district website at:

MESSAGE FROM MS. CLARK
“NO ACT OF KINDNESS, NO MATTER HOW SMALL, IS EVER WASTED.”
Aesop
The month of February ended with Pink Shirt Day, which is recognized worldwide as a
day to stand against bullying. Our students were encouraged to wear pink shirts on
February 26th and there has been a focus on kindness happening in all our classrooms
during the month of February. You will see some of our students’ work on showing
kindness posted on bulletin boards around the school.
The Chaffey-Burke Skipping Club started in February. Students are invited to the gym at 12:20
p.m. on Tuesdays to practice their skipping skills. The focus this year is to develop awareness of a
healthy heart and a healthy lifestyle. Thank you to Ms. Barisic, Ms. Conroy, Ms. Sumpter and Ms.
Trudeau for providing this opportunity for our students.
Our grade 6/7 basketball season wrapped up with a tournament at Moscrop School for both of our school
teams. Our team members showed good sportsmanship and had a great deal of fun playing in a tournament
environment. We would like to congratulate all the players for their improved basketball skills
throughout the season. Thank you to all parents that volunteered to drive to the away
games. Our students would not be able to participate in the league play without parent
support for driving. Thank you also to Ms. Alexander, Ms. Sue, Ms. Sumpter and Ms. Zmukic
for taking the time to coach both our teams.
Many classes have had the opportunity to participate in both in-school and community field experiences.
Several classes headed up to Mount Seymour to take part in snow fun. The students reported that they enjoyed
the outdoor activities. Numerous classes had the opportunity to participate in the Young Actors’ Project. The
students were very much engaged in a variety of drama activities. There was a great deal of laughter heard
during these Young Actors’ sessions.
During the month of February, our Grade 7 students participated in writing speeches on a theme provided by
our District. In each of our 4 grade 6/7 classes, the students presented their speeches to their classmates. Then 2
representatives from each class, presented their speeches in the library to all 4 classes.
At the end of the speeches in the library, 2 school finalists were chosen based on public speaking criteria. We
would like to congratulate all our grade 7 students on the effort they put in to their speeches and the courage
they had to present their speeches to others. We would also like
to acknowledge our 8 school finalists for being brave in
presenting their speeches to such a large group in the library. A
special congratulations goes to Caitlyn and Grace for the
wonderful job they did representing Chaffey at the zone semi-
finals.
In closing, I would like to share a kindness quote from a famous children’s author:
“TO THE WORLD YOU MAY BE ONE PERSON, BUT TO ONE PERSON YOU MAY BE THE WORLD.”
Dr. Seuss

PRIMARY DAYS OF MUSIC
Grade 2 and 3 students will be participating in Primary days of Music on Wednesday,
March 11th from 1:00 -2:15 at Marlborough Elementary.
STUDENT LATES AND ABSENCES
Please call the office at 604-296-9008 and press #2 to leave a message on our absentee line if
your child is going to be late or absent due to an illness or appointment. Please remember to
leave a reason for the absence. As part of our student safety policy, phone calls are made to
every student who is not accounted for after morning attendance. If your child arrives to school
after the second bell at 8:58 am, please make your way to your class and the teacher will mark
you late. If arriving 9:05 am or later your child needs to report to the office for a late pass so you don’t receive a
phone call. We appreciate your cooperation in advance.
WHEN TO KEEP YOUR SICK CHILD HOME
For the protection of your child, as well as other children, please keep your child home if he/she:
• Has a fever
• Is too sick to take part in all normal school activities
• Has a suspected or known communicable disease (ie: strep throat, pink eye, chicken pox,
or any other undiagnosed rash). Please keep them home until they are no longer infectious.
Please let the school know your child’s symptoms.
