about chailhail (former summer capital of Patiala) is 43kms from Shimla, the erstwhile summer capital of CBritish India. Shimla is currently the capital of the state, Himachal Pradesh. The region is well

known for the highest cricket ground in the world and a polo ground, at an altitude of 2,250m.

Chail is also considered as the hiker's paradise. The area is away from the bustling life of the state

capital, Shimla. Chail essentially owes its birth to the erstwhile Maharaja of Patiala, Majesty

Bhupinder Singh. Patiala (now a city in the state of Punjab), was one of the most prosperous

kingdoms in the northern region. In 1891, the Maharaja incurred the rage of Lord Kitchener. It led

to the restriction of his entry into the then British summer capital of Shimla. This incensed the

Maharaja and he vowed to build a new summer capital for himself. So he built a palace and a

summer home, as per his requirements atop a hill near Shimla, and called the area Chail.

of Patiala is considered as one of the most

majestic buildings in Northern India

reminiscent of the bygone British era.

Although, the palace was sold by the royal

family to the tourism department of the

state, the palace still attracts a huge number

of tourists from all over to revel in its

splendour.

CRICKET GROUND - Surrounded by thick forests of deodar, a well maintained Chail Cricket ground is

the highest cricket ground in the world. It was built in 1893. This ground is located at an altitude

of 2,144m which is also used as polo ground.

CHAIL SANCTUARY - The sanctuary was notified on 21 March 1976 near the town in district

Shimla and covers an area of about 10,854.36 hectares. One can see Sambar, Goral and

Cheer Pheasants at Blossom and Jhaja. Barking Deer and Kalinin are seen during dusk and

dawn. It is spread in an area of 110 km². Chail Sanctuary has a vast forest cover. In 1976,

Chail wildlife sanctuary was identified and it was declared as a protected area under

government consideration. There is a dense cover of Oak and Pine, apart from the other

major grassland covers in the area. The Sanctuary mainly has mammals. The large

mammals include rhesus macaque, leopards, Indian muntjac and goral crested porcupine.

Some of the other species found in the area include Himalayan black bear, wild boar,

common languor, sambar, and black napped hare.

The cool scented breeze whistling through the majestic forests of

Deodars makes Chail a heaven on earth, lifting one’s sprits, to be

one with God. The solitude, the beauty of nature resplendent in all

its glory heightens ones awareness of the almighty and desire to

meditate. Tourists visit Chail throughout the year in summers to

enjoy its natural coolness, and in winters to view the beautiful snow

covered hills. Summer temperatures range between 20-25 degree

Celsius throughout the day. During the night, the temperature can

drop to about 15 degree Celsius. Autumn is the time to revel in

natures rust and gold colours. A light warm Cardigan is welcome in

summers as the weather can be unpredictable. However, travellers

must be warned that temperatures often drop to low levels,

sometimes even touching the 0 degree Celsius mark. The array of

beautiful and brightly coloured birds and magpies, the Majestic

Peacocks and Peahens, the white tailed Deer, the long bushy tailed

Fox are enchanting fauna that are not to be missed. The wild

flowers covering the hillside are indeed a feast for the tired eyes.

today. The entire region is surrounded by the forests of

chirr pine and gigantic deodars. At night, the hilltop offers

majestic views of the famous hill stations of North India,
