NEWS FROM OCTOBER 2017 Chairman’s Corner Welcome to the newsletter. Full members will have received in the mail a voting form for the election of our four Directors from seven nominees, please follow the instructions and vote, if you have any questions call the office at the Club and they will assist where possible. Details of background for the nominees are also available at and around the Club. There was no requirement to vote for other positions as nominees were unopposed. Well the Club and surroundings are in for some major works over the next few months including The new deck construction: Members can expect some interruption to the flow of traffic and use of and access to golf carts but every effort will be made to keep this to a minimum. If you have a prob- lem during the construction please see Gary Thatcher or Wayne Kendrigan and they will resolve it to the best of their ability. Work on the 9 th tee is now completed and how good does that look! Thanks again to the Veterans for their support and the Course staff for their efforts. Work on the 9 th cart path has commenced and as you may have noticed renovations to the bunker are underway. This work is part of our course renewal program that started some years ago for greens and bunkers in accordance with our overall course plan. The 8 th green will commence later in the year, again some inconveniences will occur but lets be pa- tient when we start using hole 8a. Don’t forget the Golf Champions Presentation Night is on Saturday 18 November so mark that in your calendar. This has been re-instated by requests…….. so member’s support is crucial to its success. Also, that weekend the AGM is on and we do require members’ attendance to meet our quorum. As a note the Club through the efforts of Andrew Moore has established stay and play arrangements in con- junction with some accommodation venues in town. This will bring another opportunity to the Club for the fu- ture. Friday Night Membership draw number one ($10,000) continues with the second draw now building up also to a respectable ($2100). You must be there with a current member card in hand to have a chance to win. At all times be safe when driving home, have a plan B, the courtesy bus is available on given days to be used by patrons, please use it and be safe to yourself and those around you. Anyway…. good health and good golfing, see you at the Club. Chairman Keith O’Grady SLOW DOWN PLEASE!!!! Have you noticed the SLOW DOWN Signs for Vehicles and Buggies. Many Members & Visitors are adhering to the signs and a few obviously are not......... Please always drive with care both on and off the course.

Brachychiton Aceritolious

A tall deciduous tree that grows to about 40

metres high. Distinctive flame red flowers when

leafless in spring. The flowers are arranged in

clusters on stalks 7-20mm long.

Golf Shop Report It has been a busy month for the golf shop with the successful running of the pro-am and the revival of the Holden Scramble topping the list of events. On Thursday 5th October we hosted the 2017 Murwillumbah Schweppes pro-am. With the help of our many sponsors we were able to offer a $15 000 purse for the visiting professionals to challenge for and once again this year Schweppes were our major sponsor providing a good chunk of the professional purse. We also had numerous gold level sponsors including Victory Ford who were brave enough to offer a car to the first pro to make a hole in one on the 8th hole. Unfortunately the car didn’t go off but the inclusion of the offer did add extra excitement to the event. The eventual winner was Damien Jordan with 65 off the stick helping him dominate the classy field of professionals. Damien was a past Club Champion at Murwillumbah before commencing his professional career and he used his local knowledge to navigate the course. I had a chance to talk to the visiting professionals after the game and their comments were nothing but positive regarding the quality of the golf course and the overall event. A huge thanks to Brian and his team for the long hours they put in leading up to the event to present the course in pristine condition. Also I would like to congratulate and thank the golf shop staff for their hard work to help ensure the day ran smoothly. Thank you to everyone involved. Murwillumbah Golf Club held its first Holden Scramble event in over 10 years on Saturday 14th October. The competition was an adapted 4 person Ambrose and was held in conjunction with the daily competition. 80 players (20 teams) competed for a fantastic array of prizes and for the single qualifying spot to the regional finals earlier next year. The final results were extremely close and it took a magnificent albatross 2 on the par 5 16th hole to separate the eventual winners from the pack. Congratulations to Craig Carpenter, David Carpenter, Stan Allen and Alex Hunt. Following the Holden Scramble presentation we finalized the entries for the Schweppes promotion which was run in the golf shop for the past few months. Congratulations to Shane Davidson who was the lucky winner and the proud new owner of the awesome Titleist package that was on offer. The golf shop will be packed with new Titleist, Footjoy, Oakley and Adidas products over the next month so drop in and check them out. Now is a great opportunity to get some Christmas shopping done as the big day is fast ap-proaching. Enjoy our amazing golf course, Adam Causley Golf Operations Manager

Fairway Bunker Basics 1. Dig your feet down into the sand to establish a solid base. This causes you to be a little lower in rela-

tion to the ball, so choke down on the grip 3/4 of an inch to avoid hitting the ball “Fat” 2. Because your feet are lower than the ball, your swing will be flatter than normal, which can cause a

pull or a hook. You need to close your stance so you are aiming a little right of the target. 3. Position your ball about one-ball-width back in your stance from it’s normal position to help assure

that you catch the ball first.

Veterans’ Report It has been a very successful year. Our Membership is 178 players. We average 62 players each Monday. Our Open Day in June and the Week of Golf were both brilliant. The Committee Members plus Volunteer Members, ours and those from Ladies Golf Association did a superb job with spotting, raking, keeping the field moving, refreshments, computer entries, ect. A big thank you to Adam and his team in the Golf Shop. Over the past year the Veterans Club have spent $4750 on projects on the Course and in the Club-house. Although none of the Vet’s who played in the Chamionships won any of their grades, there were a few who were well up with the leaders. So congratualtions to Paul Micheal, Paul Walden, Arthur Collins, John Tilton, Kevin Mc Donald, Paul Kennett, Ian (Nick) Williams and John Bertrams for their efforts. The old believe everything, the middle age suspect everything and the young know everything.....

Joke - A Polish Man wants a divorce……. Polish man married a Canadian girl after he had been in Canada a year or so, and although his Eng-lish was far from perfect, the couple got on very well. One day, though, he rushed into a lawyer’s of-fice and asked if he could arrange a divorce for him, “Very quick”! The lawyer explained that the speed of getting a divorce would depend on the circumstances and asked these questions:

LAWYER: “Have you any grounds?” POLE: An acre and half, and a nice 3 bedroom house.

LAWYER: “No, I mean what is the foundation of the case?” POLE: “It is made of concrete, bricks & mortar.”

LAWYER: Does either of you have a real grudge?” POLE: No, We have a carport and don’t need a grudge.

LAWYER: “I mean, what are your relations like?” POLE: “All my relations live in Poland.”

LAWYER: “Is there any infidelity in your marriage?” POLE: “Yes, we have hi-fidelity stereo set & DVD player with 6.1 sound.

LAWYER: “No, I mean does your wife beat you up?” POLE: “No, I’m always up before her.”

LAWYER: “Why do you want this divorce?” POLE: “She going to kill me!”

LAWYER: “What makes you think that?” POLE: “I got proof.”

LAWYER: “What kind of proof?” POLE: “She going to poison me. She buy bottle at drug store and I read label. It say “Polish Remover.”
