The IEEE student branch of JeppiaarEngineering College is fostering the appreciableactivity of conducting monthly events for theIEEE students in a view to keep them intactand to involve the members into various activities.

The event DEC-TECH FEST was heldon 22nd Dec 2010. A tech film on 3G and 4Gtechnology was screened during the first half ofthe event. The video began with a briefintroduction on CISCO, and its role innetworking that transforms how people connect, communicate and collaborate, and dealt with3G and 4G technology, technical opportunities

DEC-TECH FEST at Jeppiaar Engineering Collegeand challenge of 3G and 4G wirelesses, comparison of 2G with 3G and 4G.

The post video session of the event wasan interactive and interesting one. It was a teambuilding activity and its laudable objective wasto develop the student’s creative thinking andnot merely to stuff their minds with loads offacts and information. Nearly 25 girls and 25 boysparticipated. They were separated into teamsand given a scenario for survival simulationsafter a shipwreck for team building and thealternate team members were asked to give anadvertisement for IEEE. The students were

found to be very active and performed withzeal. Such events were aimed to create anawareness that it is rather difficult for an individualto get through a crisis situation, but for a teamworking together; nothing is impossible. At theend of the event, goodies and pamphlets wereissued to the most challenging team who createdthe most inspirational team building.

We would like to express our gratitude toour Chairman Dr. Jeppiaar, our branchcounselor, Mr. S. Sellakumar and all the studentvolunteers, without whose endeavor the eventwould have not turned out to be a success.

ICALIP-2010, conducted at theHua-Ting Hotel & Towers, Shanghai, featuredsix world-class plenary lectures and 48 well-organized sessions (oral and poster) in sixtracks, namely Audio and Music Processing,Language and Speech Processing, ImageProcessing and Virtual Reality, 3DTV andComputer Graphics, Remote Sensing and GIS,Multimedia SoC Design and Bioinformatics.

Though there were negligibly few fromthe Indian subcontinent, with experts from farand wide – Australia, Belgium, Canada, China,France, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Iran,Japan, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland,Taiwan, Tunisia, USA, UK – the conferenceoffered opportunities to network, socialize andget to know the latest developments in thesefields.

The presentation, by Gaurav, was

received very well and there were offers from a

few researchers and professors from differentnations to help further this work in the near

future. The paper has also been included in the

conference proceedings and published in theIEEE Xplore Digital Library.

Defence Research & Development Organisation Student Robotic Competition2010 held at CVRDE, Avadi, Chennai

Robotic competition among IndianUniversities organised by DRDO at CombatVehicle Research & Development Establishment(CVRDE), Avadi, during October 2010 to motivatestudent’s innovative ideas and to create awarenessamong the student community for the emergingtechnology developments. This competition hasthe impact on the real time engineering designchallenges to meet the ruggedised productrealization. Robotic system of automated groundvehicle is focused in the domains of vehicledynamics, sensors interface, embedded systemdesign, image processing, data communicationand global positioning system.

Two hundred and forty nominations werereceived with technical proposal for thecompetition. A committee experts from CVRDE,Research & Development Engineers(R&DE(E)), Vehicle Research DevelopmentEstablishment (VRDE), Centre for ArtificialIntelligence Research(CAIR) of DRDO,academic institutions and industrial expertsvalidated the technical proposals. Top fourteenproposals were selected and awarded Rupeesone lakh for each to fabricate their proposedmodel.

The performance of model’s autonomousnavigation was evaluated and judged by a panelof senior scientists from CVRDE, CAIR,R&DE(E) & VRDE in the 500m test trackcreated at CVRDE. The navigation comprisesof lane detection and navigation of sand, gravel, ramp, ‘S’ turn for the first 350m. Navigation of thenext 150 m for the given GPS waypoints andstaircase.

The competition was tough and theprototype models demonstrated by theparticipants could not navigate the test tracksin total. Based on the performance of vehiclenavigation at different terrains, five consolationprizes of Rs. 60,000/- were awarded toencourage the participants. Four teams were

awarded for theme prizes of Rs. 25,000/- basedon the design review and technical paperpresentation skills.

Consolation Prize of five teams for theRobotic navigation: Indian School of Mines,Dhanbad; IIT Madras, Chennai; IIT Bombay,Mumbai and Thapar University, Punjab

Theme prize of four teams for theTechnical Paper presentation: INNOVATION:SRM University, Chennai; VEHICLEDYNAMICS: IIT Kharagpur; ENGINEERINGDESIGN: IIT Kharagpur; ALGORITHM:Malaviya National Institute of Technology,Jaipur

Padmashri. M. Natarajan, Chairman, governing council IIT Mandi, former SA to PMdelivered key note address and pointed out theimportance students team work and team spiritto manufacture for the project management. Healso pointed out that this elementary technologywill emerge for creativity, development andengineering to bring out a best model by thestudents community.

Shri S Sundaresh, Distinguished Scientist,CCR&D (Armament Combat vehicle andEngineering) expressed that organizing this typecompetition will generate lot of innovative ideasfrom the fresh unbiased minds.

Shri. P.Sivakumar, Director, CVRDEaddressed that vision and mission of this modeldevelopment has the technology focusing forland mine detection, surveillance, under watervehicle, unmanned aerial vehicle and unmannedground vehicle.

Dr. Prahlada Distinguished Scientist &Chief Controller R&D (Aeronautics & ServiceIntegration) in his validation address shared hisview that organising this program in DRDO toupdate the emerging science and technologyreaching the University level.

During the validation session Dr JenniferC. Byrne, Vice President, Technology Strategyand Jyotsna Iyer, Material Engineer, SeniorStaff from M/s Lockheed Martin India Pvt.Ltd., witnessed the students projects modeldemonstration.

This program received an excellentfeedback from the students and they thankedDRDO’s motivation and hospitality providedto them. They also suggested to organise similarevents in DRDO periodically.
