The objective of the Conference wasto bring together all the stakeholders and peopleinvolved in these areas for an exchange of ideasand for charting future course of action.

Dr. Srikanta K. Panigrahi said “We arenow at the mid-point between the adoption ofMDGs and the 2015 target date. So far, ourcollective record has not been great. Even today,1.1 billion people do not have access to cleandrinking water and 30,000 children die everyday of preventable causes. One in four childrenborn today will not reach the age of five,”.According to him, rural areas of developingcountries hold the key to attainment of the goals.

He emphasized that Information andCommunication Technologies (ICTs) and cleanenergy technologies can play a crucial role throughfacets such as e-governance, rural banking, safedrinking water and disaster mitigation. “Engineeringstudents must understand that education is not

about bookish and theoretical knowledge. Theymust help create real change in society.”

Dr. P. Mannar Jawahar, said thattechnology must be used as a leverage to improvethe quality of life of people at the bottom of thepyramid. “The time has come to remind ourscientists and engineers, especially our students,of their responsibility towards ensuring theachievement of MDGs, with the vast resourcesand opportunities that science and technologyhas put in their hands,” he said.

Energy harvesting through footfalls:Powering railway stations in India

D.AdityaElectrical and Electronics Engineering

Karunakar NooneyMechanical Engineering

Sri Venkateshwara College of EngineeringEmail: [email protected]

Abstract

The article explores the possibility ofharvesting energy from footfalls of peopleentering public places like railway stations usingpiezoelectric device. This device can tap thefootfalls and convert it to useful electrical energyfor use in the waiting rooms of railway stations. The energy that generated using these devicescould be stored in batteries or super capacitorand can be used later on. With such a device, the railways could save substantial costs onlighting through a sustainable energy sourcewhich is probably now wasted and isdisappearing into the ground.

Introduction

The history of energy harvesting datesback to the times when windmill and thewaterwheel were used by humans to createenergy. In recent times, the driving force behindthe search for new energy harvesting deviceshas been the desire to power sensor networksand mobile devices using energy from humans.

The human body at rest on an averageemits about 100 watts into the environmentand while moving at a reasonably brisk speedcould produce 5 watts of power [1]. Thustransforming human movement into electricityand making use of the energy generated duringthe impact of the foot while walking is anexciting idea. In countries like India , on anyordinary day, about 200000 people enter arailway station, for example, Chennai Central . Calculations  indicate  that  a  55  kg  personwalking at a brisk pace would generate about4W of power that could be collected usingenergy harvesting devices built into the floor ofthe entrance to the railway station. 10 peoplewalking through the entrance could light upabout 2 LEDS. Even if only 70% of the energyfrom the footfalls of the visitors is convertedto electrical energy a considerable number oflights could be powered in the waiting area andalso in some other passenger utility centres.

The present paper envisages apiezoelectric device at the entrance to the

station that converts at least 50 percent of the 4to 5 watts from each person’s footfalls toelectrical current which can be stored in batteriesor super capacitors.

Recently, PZT power generation has beendemonstrated in certain types of sensors/actuators, telemetry, MEMS devices [2] asblood pressure monitors [3], and Piezo filmfitted shoes [4]. Tracking migratory birds [5],designer Villarreal’s ‘Bright Walk’, a humanpowered self illuminating shoe from Mexico [6]and Artists Croft& Hartman’s newly designedpair of Heely shoes with wheels to generateelectricity [7] are some of the latest energyharvesting designer devices. A very usefulapplication imagined would be shoes embeddedwith a GPS to help wandering Alzheimerpatients. NTT, Japan has designed shoes thatgenerate 1.2 watts of electricity - enough topower an iPod continuously as long as thewearer keeps walking.

In all these studies however, the powergenerated by PZT is far smaller than requiredreal field applications and the time required tocharge power storage devices is long. In addition, the low efficiency (from both the PZT and thecircuit) is a critical issue identified. Our idea isbased on the study of Sodano et.al. for deviceapplications in real world [8]. In this study, theenergy produced by the PZT was stored in twodifferent ways. The first was in a capacitor thatallows for immediate access to the stored energy, and the second method is to charge a suitablebattery. The battery charging method providescertain advantages over the capacitor method.

The energy harvesting is initiated asfollows: A coir mat on a wooden ramp fittedwith a series of aluminum plates with a piezo-ceramic (PZT) ( at least 6 pairs over a distanceof about 2 metres) bonded to its surface placedat the entrance of the station is expected toabsorb the vibration energy from people walkingon it and convert it to usable electricity (Figure 1.)

Fig .1.

In the capacitor method the circuit(Figure 2) for storing energy is similar to thatdescribed by Sodano [8].

Fig.2.

In the second method, a battery is usedto store the power [8]. This methodincorporates a simpler circuit.

Applications Area:

In a large place like the Chennai centralwith an average waiting area of 25000 m2, about100 light fittings will be used to illuminate thearea. The energy cost estimated would be aboutRs.140160/- per year assuming each light fittingis 100 Watts working at 80% efficiency for 12hrs a day and at a modest energy cost of Rs.4/-per kWhr.

In the proposed method , assuming only50% of the 200000 visitors of average weight55 kgs use the specially designed entry port, and assuming energy created per passengermovement is 4 watts [10] , total energy generatedwould be 400 kWhr. the value of which wouldbe Rs.5, 84,000 /- [400X 4 X365 (@ Rs4/- perkWhr.]

There is thus net saving of energy cost. These calculations are based on the assumptionthat PZTs are 100% efficient. Even if the PZTswork to 25% efficiency the above method ofharvesting electrical energy could meet lightingrequirements in the waiting area of the railwaystations. The capitol costs of installations arenot taken into account here which can be spreadover few years of operation. This sustainableenergy source can be created from any type ofvibrations such as in railway stations, airports, roads and public thoroughfares and the powergenerated can be used to augment existing energysources.
