Esteemed Members,

In the month of May the details of masterlink and sub-links providing information aboutthe various medals, awards and recognition givenby IEEE and in June, the comprehensive list ofmembers of IEEE Madras Section who receivedthe awards from HQ were presented under thiscolumn. This month I would like to share some

details regarding elevation to Senior Member Grade (Courtesy:IEEE website).

Eligibility: A candidate shall be an engineer, scientist, educator,technical executive or originator in IEEE-designated fields namely:Engineering, Computer Sciences and Information Technology, PhysicalSciences, Biological and Medical Sciences, Mathematics, TechnicalCommunications, Education, Management, Law and Policy etc.,

Experience: Candidates shall have been in professional practicefor at least ten years and have shown significant performance over aperiod of at least five of those years. The educational experience iscredited as follows: Three years for a bachelor degree, Four years forbachelor and master degree and Five years for the Ph. D in an IEEE-designated field.

Five years of significant performance: Many prospectiveapplicants make the mistake of assuming that “significant performance”requires special awards, patents or other extremely sophisticated technicalaccomplishments; such is not the case. Substantial job responsibilitiessuch as team leader, task supervisor, engineer in-charge of a program orproject, engineer or scientist performing research with some measure ofsuccess (papers), or faculty developing and teaching courses with researchand publications — all are indications of significant performance. Thesignificant performance that would serve to qualify an individual forelevation to Senior Member need not have occurred in the yearsimmediately prior to the application. Thus, life and retired members areeligible for elevation.

Dear Friends,

This month chairman’s message deals in detailabout the benefits of Senior Membership in IEEE andhow a professional member can get elevated as a SeniorMember (SM). It is noted that a good no. of ourSection members are eligible to become SMs. Whilea few have already applied for the SM, we earnestlyrequest other professional members to initiate theprocess of becoming a SM since the entire process

takes about two months including the approval by the HQ committee.

With the current academic year started in June, we expect thestudent branches to become quite active and organize a no. of events.Already few active student branches have reported about their activities.This month LINK reports the activities held at Kumaraguru College ofTechnology, Kongu Engineering College, Aarupadai Veedu Institute ofTechnology, Knowledge Institute of Technology, Francis XavierEngineering College and M. Kumarasamy College of Engineering.

Brief reviews of four text books — “Basic Computer Engineering”,“Basic Electrical and Electronics Engineering”, “Control Systems Engineering”,“Game Architecture and Programming” appear in this issue of LINK. Thepublisher Wiley India Pvt. Ltd is willing to provide discount & free shippingto our members. Students and faculty members may pl. avail the offer.

Snippets relating to self development & management such as “Somecommunication complaints”, “People who lack confidence”, “Six ThinkingHats” have been published along with a list of Interesting InformationSources. We are sure that readers will find them useful.

While we wish to publish articles contributed by professionalmembers, we do not seem to be receiving them. We urge our membersworking industry share their experiences and present case studies whichwould interest other members and the student members at large.

Joining the IEEE and its societies during mid August has uniqueadvantage. One can enjoy the membership benefits for 15 months by payingthe annual dues for 12 months. The students who are planning to become themember of IEEE may consider the joint membership of IEEE, IEEE CSand IEEE CS Digital Library at USD 40/=. (Last year rate – which is likelyto continue this year too). For working professional, e-membership optionis available at USD 55/= instead of normal membership at USD 141/=.

We request our members to actively participate in them.

Social Activity

Activities at Kumaraguru College of Technology

The IEEE KCT Student branch organizeda social activity for orphan children in BharathaAnnai Seva Sangam, Coimbatore on 26th Feb2011. Around 20 IEEE student members andfour staff members volunteered in thisprogramme. The staff members and students

In the next session Prof. V. Sharmila Deveexplained about the basics of MATLABprogramming with M-File which included thearray formation, Polynomial functions, GraphPlotting, Sub Plots, Formation of 3D an Meshimages.

The session on control system designwas handled by Prof. D. Rajalakshmi. Sheexplained time response analysis with LTIviewer and stability analysis with help of Bodeplot, Nyquist plot and Polar plot. The afternoonsession started with Introduction of Simulink.The various blocks in Simulink were explainedand an example Simulink model wasdemonstrated for sine wave generation andmathematical calculation. The ControlledRectifiers and inductive chopping in Powerelectronics was discussed. DSP application likeconvolution, fast Fourier transform, inverse fastFourier transform was discussed in MATLAB.

At the end of the session certificates weredistributed by Dr. Mahalakshmi, Professor inEEE Dept. 74 students from various engineeringcolleges enthusiastically participated in thisprogramme.

Annual General Body Meeting

IEEE KCT Student Branch conducted itsannual general body meeting on 24th June 2011.Branch office bearers and all IEEE studentmembers participated. The meeting waspresided by Prof. .V. Sharmila Deve, IEEE staffin-charge, IEEE KCT Student Branch. The newoffice bearers for the year 2011 were elected.Forthcoming ture activities like seminar,

interacted with the children after they hadintroduced themselves. Drawing competitionwas held and stationary items were provided toevery one of them. They participated in thisevent interestingly. A group activity to test theunderstanding and absorbing ability of thechildren was also held. Prizes and gifts weredistributed to the children. After a short breakwith snacks and cool drinks, a short filmemphasizing motivation by focusing the life ofcelebrities, patriotism and environmental issueswas screened. 70 orphan children participatedin the activities. The IEEE Student membersand staff members felt that this activity gavethem immense satisfaction.

HATMAT-11: Hands on TrainingProgramme on Matlab

The IEEE KCT Student branchconducted a one day workshop “Hands ontraining programme on Matlab” on 4th March2011. Dr. Rani Thottugal HoD/EEE welcomedthe participants. Prof. R. Kavitha delivered thepresentation about introduction andapplications of MATLAB/Simulink in the fieldof signal processing, power electronics,communication systems, control design,robotics, optimization neural and fuzzy system.

The inaugural function of the activitiesof IEEE Student Branch and the WIE AffinityGroup of Kongu Engineering College wasorganized on 2nd July 2011.

The function began with a prayer songand the lighting of the traditional Kuthuvilakku.Prof. K. Narayanan- Staff Co-cordinator of IEEEwelcomed the gathering. In his address, he invitedthe students to actively participate in the eventsof the forum. He also encouraged the studentsto volunteer to organize the events of IEEE.

Mrs. V. R. Saraswathy, Staff Co-coordinator introduced the office bearers for theyear 2011-2012. The year plan for IEEE wasproposed by Mr. P. Shanmuganathan, Chairman,IEEE SB and the year plan for WIE wasproposed by Ms. S. Harini, Chairperson, WIE.

Prof. S. Kuppuswami, Principal, KECand Branch Counselor, IEEE KEC presided over

the function. He wished the new office bearers

all the best and also suggested to add more

innovative programs in the annual plan so that

students can use them to develop themselves.

The guest speaker, Dr. N. Kumarappan,

Prof., Annamalai University, in his address gave

a pandect of IEEE. He suggested us to try for

various awards that are given by IEEE HQ. He

also threw light on the emerging top ten

technologies and briefed them for the benefit of

students.

To express our gratitude, Prof. K.

Narayanan presented the memento to Dr. N.

Kumarappan. The vote of thanks was proposed

by Mr. S. Aswin Deep, Treasurer – IEEE SB.

The function came to an end by extending

gratitude to our motherland through the

National Anthem.

On 7th and 8th May 2011 IEEE HyderabadSection organized the Teacher In ServiceProgram training workshop at Taj Krishna,Hyderabad. From IEEE Madras SectionDr.N.Kumarappan, Educational Activity Chairattended the workshop as one of the organizingcommittee member and also around ten memberof IEEE Madras attended the above workshop.

Explaining the need for such workshopand how IEEE will be involved in Pre-

The experts briefed how to promoteapplied inquiry based learning and the ways toenhance the level of technological literacy atpre-University level. They also stressed onidentifying the ways through which engineers

can assist school and school systems. Then

TISP hands-on activity was given to theparticipants. It focused on how to design and

build a working windmill with every dayproducts. It was an interesting activity and the

participants indulged themselves in the activity.

Then a lecture on social networking was

presented.

Discussion on the challenges &

opportunities in the local pre-University schoolsystems was held then again hands on activity

on electrical messages then and now was given.

It focused on exploring electric message systems

from light signals using international morse code

to text messaging. The TISP participants

involved themselves in the activity and created

several unique models.

There was a lecture on alignment with

education standards in the secondary schools.

Then the very important issue of how to begin

and how to develop a partnership with Pre-

University education community and the

professional development needs in the school

and school systems were discussed in detail.

Action plan for the next steps were developed.

Planning teams were identified. Finally the

TISP workshop adjourned with the panel

meeting.

TIME, Chennai addressed the participants.

delivered the presidential Address. Dr. A.Anthony Irudhayaraj, Dean (IT) AVITwelcomed the gathering and briefed theimportance of career planning opportunities andcreated the awareness about the sponsorshipfor higher education.

IEEE Awareness Meet

Activities at Knowledge Institute of Technology

An “IEEE Awareness Meet” was held on16th August 2010. About 210 students fromvarious departments actively participated in thisprogram.

Dr. N. Santhiyakumari, IEEE BranchCounselor addressed the gathering about thehistory of IEEE, Mission & Vision of IEEE andits benefits for the student community and gavea detailed description about the objectives. Shealso highlighted the benefits acquired by beingmember of IEEE. Her speech was thoughtprovoking and inspired the students to becomethe members of IEEE. Mrs. M. Shenbagapriya,IEEE Student Branch In-charge explained theimportance of IEEE in an engineer’s life, andgave a clear idea and the significance of IEEEwith various department of engineering. Herpresentation made it clear that IEEE is for allbranches of engineering and not just aninstitution of the electrical engineers.

“Creative Drawing” Competition

A “Creative Drawing” competition on thetopic ‘Green Energy & Global Warming” washeld on 14th Sep 2010. Around 30 participantsof I and II year students had actively participatedto show their talents in drawing.

Dr.N.Santhiyakumari, Student BranchCounselor, addressed the gathering and presidedover the event. The main objective of thiscompetition was to create awareness on globalwarming and green energy. This was a platformto the students to show their creativity andexpress it by drawing. This was also the platformwhere imagination of commoner ends and the

engineer begins. The event was mentored byMrs. M. Shenbagapriya, IEEE Student BranchIn-charge and was coordinated by Mr. K.Sivaprakasam and C.R. Ashokrajan, IEEEstudent member. This event was well receivedby the participants, Mr. T. Praveenkumar,Student Branch Chairman thanked all for makingthis event a grand success.

Technical & General Quiz

A “Technical & General Quiz” contestwas held on 29th Sep 2010, for the 1st & 2nd yearstudents. Around 75 students from variousdepartments actively participated in the event.

The IEEE Student Branch Counselor Dr.N. Santhiyakumari addressed the gathering. Mrs.M. Shenbagapriya IEEE Student Branch In-charge and Mr. K. Jagan IEEE student memberco-ordinated the event. Out 400 students whotook the preliminary test, 15 students from 1st

& 2nd year were short listed for the quiz. The 1st

round of quiz was on engineering concepts andon historical events. After the first round, severalrounds were conducted. At the end of fifthround, three teams were selected for the finalround. While the final round questions for the2nd years was on recent technologies anddevelopment, the first years had questions oncurrent events going around the world. The eventcame to an end, with the vote of thanks deliveredby Mr.V. Kumaravel, Secretary of IEEE StudentBranch.

Technical Article Presentation

An event focusing on “Technical ArticlePresentation” on “Recent Trends in Engineering”was organized on 7th Oct 2010 for the 2nd yearstudents of all departments. Around 150participants participated in this event.

The IEEE Student Branch Counselor Dr.N. Santhiyakumari addressed the gathering. Mrs.M. Shenbagapriya, IEEE Branch In-charge andMr.R.Ravikumar, IEEE Student Member co-ordinated the event. Out of the 150 memberswho took the preliminary test gave shortpresentations on technical topics and 30

students were short listed for the finalpresentation and made presentations based onrecent trends in their own core departments ofengineering. Based on the presentation skills,technical concepts and spontaneity of thepresentations three teams were selected andawarded with prizes. The event came to an endwith the vote of thanks by Mr. M. AshokKumar, Vice Chairman, IEEE Student Branch.

Mind Twisting

An event focusing on “Mind Twisting”activities was organized on 24th Dec 2010.Around 75 participants from variousdepartments took part in the event.

Dr. N. SanthiyaKumari, IEEE StudentBranch Counselor presided over the functionand addressed the participants. Mrs. M.Shenbagapriya, IEEE Student Branch In-chargeand Mr. T. Praveenkumar, Chairman, IEEEStudent Branch co-ordinated the event. Theevent had five rounds of contest to filter out,the best team. The first round which was basedon I-Q, was followed by a round which testedthe communication skills. The third round wasthe tongue twisters which tested onpronunciation and extemporaneity of thestudents, from which 3 teams were selected forthe final round and they were tested oninnovativeness and they were given a task ofsolving issues and pre-time setup games. Itserved as a platform for all members tocommunicate and develop themselves. Ttheevent came to an end with the vote of thanksby Mr.V.Kumaravel, Secretary, IEEE StudentBranch Secretary who thanked the management,branch counselor, branch in-charge and all theparticipants for making the event a grandsuccess.

Cultural Event

A “Cultural” event was organized on 31st

Dec 2010. About 35 students from variousdepartments actively participated in this event.

Dr. N. Santhiyakumari, IEEE StudentBranch Counselor presided over the event andaddressed the gathering. Mrs. M.Shenbagapriya, IEEE Student Branch In-chargeand M. Muthukumar, R. Anandhi, K.Kavipriya, N. Poornidevi, IEEE Student BranchMembers had coordinated the event and madeall the necessary arrangements. The cultural haddifferent categories like singing, dancing andmimicry. The students with interest involvedin these events and exhibited their talents. Everystudent proved their individuality. Generallythese kinds of events are conducted for thepurpose of relieving the students from their

curriculum activities and to bring out theirextracurricular talents. The selection for theprizes was based on the criteria such asperformance, body language, expression, voice,action etc., Most students performed well andentertained the audience and selectioncommittee. The event came to an end, with thevote of thanks by Mr. V. Kumaravel, Secretaryof IEEE Student branch.

IEEE Membership Meet

introduced the office bearers and members of

different committees. She highlighted the variousactivities which were conducted by IEEEStudent Branch during the academic year 2010-

11.The future plans of the Student Branch werealso discussed after she had briefly explainedabout the branch operation. The session was

helpful in clarifying certain doubts persisted inthe minds of the newly inducted members. Themain objective of this meet was to discuss about

the IEEE Spectrum magazine and highlight thebenefits of the membership. The meet provedbeneficial in learning the art of proper planning

to avoid hard hitting of books and was founduseful and informative by all the students.

Social Awareness Programme

An “IEEE Membership Meet” was heldon 21st January 2011. About 45 studentmembers of IEEE had actively participated inthis meet.

was organized on 4th Feb 2011. About 50

members participated and expressed their

concepts in the form of dialogues and actions.

and had coordinated the programme and made

all the necessary arrangements for the event.

This kind of social event makes the students

feel free to express their feelings based on their

concepts and enrich the mind of the students.

This further improves the leadership qualities

and team spirit of the students. The participants

took various topics such as child labor, education

for girls, mobile phones causing accidents,

today’s youth, India in 2020, and India’s present

stage of development etc., and presented their

concepts. The event came to an end with the

vote of thanks by Mr. M. Ashokkumar,Vice

Chairman of IEEE Student Branch who thanked

the management, branch counselor, branch in-

charge and all the participants for making the

event a grand success.

Seminar on ASIC Physical Design Flow at Francis Xavier Engineering College

The IEEE student branch of FrancisXavier Engineering College organized a seminaron ASIC Physical Design Flow for the benefitof students and staff members on 27th May2011. Mr. M. Senthil Vinoth from HDLSolutions, Madurai was the resource person.About 25 IEEE members and staff of FXEngineering College participated in the seminar.The program was interactive and explored manyinteresting and useful techniques and ideas in

VLSI design. Even for most complicatedprogramming, many ideas and solutions weregiven by the resource person.

The seminar covered the followingaspects: ASIC design flow; Schematic andlayout design and Lambdha based rules,placement and routing. The participants foundthe sessions were very useful and interesting.

Dr.S .K. Chitra Lakshimi, Assistant Professor,Dept. of English, Government College of Engg,Salem presided over the programme. Prof. V.Kavitha, HOD/ECE, IEEE Student BranchAdvisor and Prof. K. Skills Enlightening Program on IEEE COMSOC atM. Kumarasamy College of Engineering

Mr. G. Shanmugavadivel, LEC/ECE alsoparticipated in the programme.

The programme started with the Lightingof the ‘Kuthuvilaku’ by the dignitaries. Mr. P.S. Prakash, Pre-Final ECE, Vice Chairperson,IEEE COMSOC welcomed the gathering. Prof.K. Sundararaju, IEEE Student Branch Counselorin his felicitation, briefed about the importanceof communication and interpersonal skills in acorporate environment as well as in day-to-daylife. Prof. V. Kavitha, IEEE Student BranchAdvisor addressed the gathering and briefed themembers of IEEE COMSOC on the numerousways of gaining knowledge with the help ofIEEE COMSOC.

Then the Guest of Honour Dr. S .K. ChitraLakshimi conducted an interactive and veryinformative session on ‘Skills for Work’. Shebriefed on the usage of linguistics of English allover the world and how to use the language in agood manner. She explored about the

pronunciation skills and exploited on the tipsof using dictionary to improve pronunciation.She conducted a spot innovative activity, whichwas attended by 20 students as volunteers.Then from that activity, a highly energeticinteraction was held among the students. Timemanagement skills, focus on the activity,steadiness, enthusiasm and differentapproaches of the students had been practicallyobserved by the students.

She pointed out students and on the spotsituations were given to check their professionalbehavior and grasping abilities of the studentswhich was very impressive and helped thestudents to think professionally. Theprogramme concluded with the vote of thanksby Ms. V. Naga Sushmitha, Final ECE,Secretary, IEEE COMSOC.

Green Hat (Creative Thinking): nocriticism; just creativity. Explore,investigate, and expand your idea, decision,or concept and, in so doing, give way tofreewheeling thinking.

Red Hat (Feeling): What is your gut-levelreaction or instinctive feeling (not yourjustification—just your emotionalresponse)? Are you passionate, fearful, oruncertain about this idea?

White Hat (Neutrality): Like the colorwhite, this approach stresses neutrality. Beobjective; list the pros and cons, using only

Six Thinking Hats the facts you have. Look for cracks or holesin your theory and address them with theappropriate data.

Black Hat (Negative Judgment): This isthe caution fl ag. Play the devil’s advocate;list reasons this idea may not be the bestafter all. What are some objections? Whyshould you be cautious?

Yellow Hat (Positive Judgment): Beoptimistic and sunny about this idea. Whatare all the possible benefi ts and the valueof this decision or idea?

Blue Hat (Process Control): This hat isworn by the meeting’s chairperson(s). Likedirecting traffi c, the blue hat helps tofacilitate the discussion and debate. (Youmay suggest revisiting a team’s response ifnew information merits it or inviting teamsto question each other.)

React defensively to criticism.

Are not honest about their ownabilities/limits.

Shun the advice/input of others.

Tend not to learn from their mistakes.

Set unrealistic goals, and haveunrealistic expectations.

Use problems as an excuse not to try.

Blame others for things that go wrong.

Avoid new challenges and play it safe.

Repeat self-defeating habits over andover again.

Expect the worst, and often get it.
