Lord Baden-Powell Society Helps Dreams Come True

With the 23rd Australian Jamboree to take place next month, thousands of Scouts are bursting with excitement and getting ready to make the trip to Maryborough in Queensland.

As a member of the Lord Baden-Powell Society, you are also invited to the Jamboree to attend a VIP event, where you can experience at first hand the memories made at this national event. See details inside.

I am always heartened by the loyalty and generosity of our members, particularly the overwhelming response to the annual Jamboree Appeal. The Society set a new record raising over $150,000 over the past three years and has succeeded in supporting over 300 Scouts. These Scouts who otherwise would not be able to afford to attend will remember these experiences for the rest of their lives. Scouts like Khanu from the Northern Territory, whose story you can read about in this newsletter.

We also recognise the generosity of four members who joined the Honour’s Circle in 2012 in our Honours Recognition Awards. We thank you for your loyalty.

In June the Society distributed $136,000 to the Branches which was greatly appreciated and goes a long way in keeping membership fees low at the troop level. Please take the time to also read the story from Scouts SA who used their distribution towards the Woodhouse facility.

Finally, a warm welcome to our new members and wishing you all a safe and happy festive season.

Woodhouse, which is proudly owned and operated by Scouts SA, was originally purchased many years ago for Scouts to camp and accommodate Jamborees. However, over the years, Woodhouse has progressed into offering a unique blend of casual accommodation, such as traditional tent camping in natural surroundings (for up to 1000 guests); cabin style accommodation sleeping 6, and the Old House, which is a heritage listed 1848 stone mansion that sleeps 60.

Since 2000, Woodhouse has also been focusing on developing its unique adventure obstacle course, ‘Challenge Hill’.

Challenge Hill, affectionately known, as ‘Woody’s Challenge Hill’ attracts over 60,000 users each year (predominantly children) and is one of the most popular

activities available for young people delivering exciting team building, problem solving courses and most importantly, fun!

The course comprises over 30 obstacles, each with different levels of difficulty and complexity. The object is to encourage kids to think “outside the square”, testing their boundaries as they take on the challenge of navigating the course.

A New Record Set for Jamboree Appeal

Developments at Woodhouse, South Australia

Scouts SA were provided with an annual contribution from the Society, which was attributed to the ‘Woodhouse Fund”. The Woodhouse Fund is the financial vehicle for the on-going development of Scouts SA’s major property in the Adelaide Hills as the premier youth activity centre for Scouting.

Due to the overwhelming generosity of the Society members who supported this year’s Jamboree Appeal, we have managed to set a new record. Over 270 donations were received in 2012 to beat our target of $50,000.

The aim of the appeal was to financially assist 250 young Scouts so that they could experience an Australian Jamboree, young boys & girls who otherwise may not have afforded to attend. With the success of the appeal, we are now able to assist 352 Scouts heading to Maryborough in January, to take part in this event of a lifetime.

All these 352 young Australian Scouts are grateful for the support of the Lord Baden-Powell Society members and we will hear some of their Jamboree stories in next May’s newsletter.

Funds provided by the Society helped support Scouts SA to make necessary upgrades to the property.

Scouts SA acknowledges and thanks the members of the Lord Baden-Powell Society for their generous support and contributions to the fund.

ACHIEVED Join Us at the Jamboree

Mawson Scholarship Grooms Future LeadersThe third Mawson Scholarship in Leadership course took place at Camp Cottermouth in the ACT in October this year. 23 Venturer Scouts, who were identified as talented and passionate youth members, were chosen to attend the course by their respective Branches.

Conducted over five days, the Mawson Leadership program works to develop the confidence & leadership potential of each participant to foster their engagement in shaping the future direction of Scouting in Australia. It provides intensive instruction and practical training in teamwork, problem solving, conflict resolution and event management. During this week, participants had the opportunity to meet with other like-minded young people from all over Australia and to build friendships and networks that will last for many years into the future.

The highlight for many was a visit to the Australian

Defence Force Academy where the participants all completed an overwater obstacle course. FSGT McGlynn put the 23 candidates through their paces as they climbed, crawled and leapt their way through the various challenges.

In honour of the Lord Baden-Powell Society Membership, the Committee of the 23rd Australian Jamboree

cordially invites all members to join them at a very special VIP event.

If you will be in Queensland in January, we would love you to join us for this special occasion to personally thank you for your generous support. Re-live some of your own memories and see how the Australian

Jamboree continues to build confidence and resilience.

RSVP by 20 December, 2012If you would like to attend please contact Maggie Burke, Manager of the Lord Baden-Powell Society, on

[email protected] or 02 8440 5913 and full information will be provided.

Australia’s best and most accomplished high altitude mountaineer Andrew Lock OAM also joined the course to present on his many adventures and discuss the very important values of leadership involved in achieving success.

The Mawson Leadership program is the pinnacle of leadership training and personal development in the Venturer Scout section.

Fascinating Jamboree Facts

When hosting an event as large as the 23rd Australian Scout Jamboree (AJ2013), there’s going to be huge numbers involved, not only regarding the people. The 11,500 Scouts and Leaders won’t have to worry about getting hungry at all with the amounts of food they are being supplied.

With 114,000 eggs being sent to the site, they can enjoy a lovely breakfast while toasting some of the 22,500 loaves of bread – for a traditional baker’s dozen, that’s 292,500 slices!

Wash that down with a portion of the 48,900 litres of fruit juice and you’re ready for the day! During the day they don’t have to fret about being peckish with approximately 340,000 snack bars being sent and another 340,000 juice poppers as well.

Come dinnertime, to refuel the participants for the night’s events, they have an option 1,400 kilograms of spiral pasta or even 6,510 plus kilograms of baked beans. That’s a lot of gas – 9,000 kilograms in 1,000 gas bottles to be precise.

For all this food there needs to be a place to store it. There are 550 x 73 litre eskies with another 550 x 70 litre plastic food crates! To keep it chilled in the expected warm weather, 16,000 plus bags of ice will be used.

So when you take this all into perspective, you can see how bulky an event like AJ2013 is – lots of people, lots of food, lots of fun.

Dream It Live It.

A Dream Come True for Khanu

After Khanu came to live in Darwin he became extremely lonely and felt a little lost due to the massive change in his environment, new town, new school, new kids and a new family dynamic. Khanu was not used to being in one place for very long, as his family used to travel a lot and Khanu had been around Australia three times already in his young life. Due to this, Khanu was encouraged to join Scouts by his uncle who was a Scout himself in his younger days.

The transition to Scouts was not an easy one for Khanu, he nearly quit a few times as he had trouble bonding with new people. But thanks to the encouragement of his grandparents and the Scout leader, Khanu has stayed and grown to love being a Scout.

One little boy in the Northern Territory had a dream of going to the Australian Jamboree and thanks to the Lord Baden-Powell Society, this dream has come true.

Khanu was living with his Mother, older brother and younger sister in a southern state, when his Father left the country to get married to someone Khanu hardly knew. Khanu has no idea if, or when, his father will ever return to Australia.

As Khanu was a spirited middle child and Khanu’s Mother was under a lot of financial and emotional pressure, it was decided that Khanu would go to Darwin and live with his grandparents.

Khanu has thrived in Scouting and his grades at school have begun to improve as well. Khanu became very goal orientated, when AJ2013 was announced. His grandparents could not afford to send him to the Jamboree as well as sending him to see his mother and siblings on School holidays. So Khanu took it upon himself to raise the money. His main focus in doing this was collecting cans.

Khanu would get up early and collect cans on the side of the road and also go to any place where there was a big event the night before and clean up after people who had thoughtlessly left their cans behind.

To date, Khanu has managed to raise $1,000 to contribute to the AJ2013. Khanu is very pleased to know that he has not only received the $600 grant from the Lord Baden-Powell Society to help with the costs incurred with the travel to AJ2013, but has also been granted $500 from the Office of Youth Affairs in the Northern Territory to assist him in his dream.

Khanu says that the money that is granted through the Lord Baden-Powell Society has enabled him to complete his fund raising and focus on Scouts, it will also help him be able to pay for the clothing and extras that he needs to take with him on his adventure.

Khanu knows that it will also give his grandmother some peace of mind that Khanu is seeing his dream come true.

Ist Yaralla Rover Sea Scouts Jonathan Gough and Riley Berlecky were selected to represent Scouts Australia at the Sixth Koch Cup which was held in America from the 22-28 July 2012.

This was the first time representatives from NSW have attended, and it was made possible by the generosity of the Lord Baden-Powell Society.

Sea Scouts from around the world travelled to the California Maritime Academy in the San Francisco Bay area of California, USA. Two person teams tested their sailing skills as they raced in Flying Junior (FJ's) sailboats on the very waters that will be host to the best sailors in the world for the America's Cup Race in 2013. This year participants came from Germany, Denmark, New Zealand, Sweden, Brazil, England, Finland, Norway, Canada and Hong Kong.

It was a great honour to represent Australia and a wonderful opportunity to meet other sailors from around the world. We are very grateful for the support provided by the Lord Baden-Powell Society and City of Canada Bay Council small grants program.

Both Riley and I have been active members in the Cub, Scout, Ventur-er and Rover sections of 1st Yaralla Sea Scout Group for over 10 years, where we have had extensive experience in both land and water based activities as well as community service.

Meeting new people was a highlight of the trip. I have met people from around the world that I can keep in touch with & see one day when I go travelling again.

The great experience of travelling around the world was made by a greater sailing experience. We came 12th out of 40 competing boats, which is so far the record for Australian Sea Scouts.
