Student Attendance

DET requires that schools record and report on student absences each day. Further, it is a requirement

that parents or guardians provide the school with an explanation of the absence that morning.

Student absences can be recorded using our communication app, COMPASS or contact the front office

by phone no later than 9.10am of the morning of the absence.

If you wish to take your child from school to attend a dentist and/or other appointment during school

hours, you MUST come to the office to sign them out. If the child is returned to school later that day,

they MUST be accompanied to the office by an adult and approved by office staff.

Request to Administer Medication at School

We are being requested by an increasing number of parents to supervise their children taking medication

at school. This may be following a short illness and may involve medications such as antibiotics, etc for

a few days. In some cases, the medication is to treat a chronic or long term medical condition and may

require daily medication for extended periods of time.

Page 3: CHALCOT WEEKLY - chalcotps.vic.edu.auCHALCOT WEEKLY Growing a Supportive Community of Active Learners Footy Day Sausage Sizzle . ... the only medication that a child may keep with

School Council has an approved policy regarding the taking of medication at school. Under this policy,

the only medication that a child may keep with them is an asthma puffer. Under no circumstances may a

child keep any other form of medication in their possession while at school.

To ensure the safety of all students, requests to administer medication at school must be completed on a

school proforma, a copy of which can be obtained at the front office. Medication must also be sent in a

clearly labelled container and delivered to the office at the start of the day.

Lost Property

We have a large amount of unclaimed items of clothing in lost property. Lost property is stored in two

large containers in the Hall. If your child is missing any items of clothing please come and have a

look!!!! Most of the items are not named and are in good condition. Any unnamed and unclaimed items

will be washed and used as preloved items or disposed of.

Every Day Counts

School is better when you are here.

Below please see the Attendance Fact Sheet for primary school students:

Do I have to go to school?

Yes, in Victoria everyone aged from 6 – 17 has to go to school.

Missing one day a fortnight is the same as missing 4 whole weeks of school a year. From prep to Year

12 that adds up to 1.5 years of school!

School is better when you attend. Your friends and your teachers notice that you’re away and wonder if

you’re OK.

Why is regular attendance at school important?

Right now, being at school is the most important thing you need to do for your future. School helps you

build good habits for later on in life. You might think school is just about Maths and English but you’re

also learning about how to work with other people and how to solve problems.

Being at school every day also means you are becoming more independent as a learner and interacting

with your friends and teachers. If you’re at school you can get help from your teachers and friends and

won’t have to try to learn things in your own time.

Being an adult probably seems far away but we know that young people who attend school more

frequently have better outcomes after school too. This means they earn more money, have better job

opportunities and are generally healthier. So being at school really does make a difference!

Do my parents need to let the school know if I’m going to be away?

Yes. Your parents need to notify the school on the day of your absence.

Are there any good reasons to be away from school?

No. Unless you are so sick you can’t get out of bed or there is an event like a funeral, you should be at

school. Every day you are away is a day of classes and social connection you miss out on. Taking a day

off for your birthday or go shopping isn’t a good reason to miss school.

Even medical and health appointments should be made either before or after school or during the school

holidays. This includes family holidays. Your parents are encouraged not to plan holidays during the

term but to organise these during the school holidays.

Page 4: CHALCOT WEEKLY - chalcotps.vic.edu.auCHALCOT WEEKLY Growing a Supportive Community of Active Learners Footy Day Sausage Sizzle . ... the only medication that a child may keep with

If you do have to be away for some reason, your parents need to contact the school and let them know

what’s going on. Depending on the situation, the school might provide schoolwork for you to complete.

What do I miss out on if I’m not at school?

You miss out on all the big stuff – class discussions and all the interaction that happens in a classroom,

the chance to get help from teachers and the opportunity to practice skills and gain knowledge. Being

away means you might miss out on a lot of learning or that you need to catch up in your time.

If all of that isn’t enough to convince you to be at school every day, being away also means you also miss

out on playing with your friends. Being away from school a lot can be lonely. It has a big impact on

relationships and social connections. Believe it or not, everyone wants you at school and it really is

better when you attend.

What if I am having problems getting to school?

Getting to school on time everyday can be about having a good routine. If you find yourself running late

or missing school because you are disorganised, try:

Asking your parents for help getting ready

Having a set time to go to bed

Leaving all technology out of your bedroom

Packing your school bag the night before with everything you need

Having a set time for breakfast

Planning to meet up with a friend so you can travel to school together.

Sometimes though it can just be hard to go to school. You might feel overwhelmed by the work or

things might be tough with your friends.

Whatever the situation is, staying away from school is not the answer. There are lots of people who want

to help. Try talking to:

Your parents or another adult family member

A trusted teacher

Wellbeing Coordinator or the school counsellor

Another trusted adult like your coach

Smoking is banned outside Victorian schools (within 4 meters of the school boundary)

The Victorian Government has passed laws to restrict smoking in and near all schools (government and

non-government), kindergartens and childcare centres. The Tobacco Amendment Act 2014 (Vic)

(Amendment Act) amends the Tobacco Act 1987 (Vic) (Act) by inserting new outdoor smoking bans into

the Act, expanding on previous anti-smoking legislation. Although government schools are smoke-free

zones under department regulations (and non-government schools are smoke-free by choice), these new

laws assist Principals to keep their schools smoke-fee. Financial penalties act as a strong deterrent for

those who skirt the previous laws around smoking in schools, or who might be habitual re-offenders.

According to the Explanatory Memorandum, the reforms aim to limit exposure to second hand smoke,

denormalise smoking, minimise littering and improve public amenity.

Smoke-free zones

Page 5: CHALCOT WEEKLY - chalcotps.vic.edu.auCHALCOT WEEKLY Growing a Supportive Community of Active Learners Footy Day Sausage Sizzle . ... the only medication that a child may keep with

In Victoria, smoking is banned within 10 metres of outdoor public children’s playground equipment and

other public areas used by children such as skate parks.

Now, the Victorian Parliament has legislated to further limit the places where people can smoke in

proximity to children. Currently, the Act prohibits smoking in enclosed workplaces – which includes

schools.

The new laws go much further by prohibiting smoking:

in an unenclosed area within school premises (the buildings and grounds of the school); and

at or within 4 metres of any part of a pedestrian access point to the school (e.g. the school gate).

The laws are aimed at parents, carers and other people aged over 18 who attend school premises.

A person caught breaking these laws can be issued with an on-the-spot fine $147.61 or a fine up to $738

if court action is taken.

These laws ensure that schools will be ‘smoke-free’ environments.
